Can James O'Brien only win an argument by shouting over a caller every 5 seconds?

Snowmunch · 24/08/2015 12:34

James O'Brien on LBC has this manner of talking and shouting over people he disagrees with that only the intellectually insecure resort to as an act of sheer desperation. He has this sense of deep self loathing that soon rears its ugly head in the form of a deep seated hatred against anyone who wins an argument. The really weird thing is that as the presenter on the radio, and team of a producer, researchers and others, a few seconds delay control, and a fade button, he frequently abuses callers from his position of power. Odd, when he pretends to be such a hand-wringing lefty. I suspect he was bullied very badly as a child at his public school for his accent, and it's all coming out now. Also, his show is very under researched, and often a few seconds searching on Google, reveals what complete tosh he talks. He had this show on ITV, and it was appalling, and received universally terrible reviews. Some day time TV watching people mistake his arrogance, rudeness and abuse of power for some ability to argue, but the truth is his main talent is to dish out verbal bullying followed by the fade out. No wonder he hates himself so much.

I really like the JOB show, always entertaining and he is one of my fave presenters on LBC, yes hes can be smug and condescending but I think that's just part of his radio personna act.

Also think Nick Abbot is great to listen to

Lottapianos · 25/08/2015 16:26

Yes I love Nick Abbot suzanne, he's perfect for weekend night time

I do admire JOB's defence of the tube workers Babycham and his commitment to discussing the alleged Westminster sex offences. Sometimes he's really great and very principled, sometimes he's just as tabloid as the rest of them. I love 'panting sycophant' - perfect description of Ferrari Smile

Snowmunch · 25/08/2015 16:56

Obviously it occurred to me. I find it pubescent and rather pathetic, hence my comment!

MistressMia · 25/08/2015 16:57

Babychams post is spot on.

OP hard to take you seriously when you state that NF is intelligent !!!

He is as thick as pig shit and his show is full of ignorant callers agreeing with his tabloid twaddle

suzannefollowmyvan · 28/08/2015 09:46

James revealed yesterday that he is a practicing christianConfused
?
I'm finding it hard to take him at all seriously now ?
?

Lottapianos · 28/08/2015 10:19

Suzanne, oh yeah he goes to church every Sunday but acts like he's all right-on and fashionably cynical it. Just like he pretends to be a feminist. He's a plum. I'm listening to him right now though!

Nick Ferrari had a white van drive phone up this morning to defend the lovely practice of yelling and tooting at women he drives past. He actually said 'if they dress perogative, with all their things hanging out, then what do they expect?' Grin Shock The bloke didn't have 2 brain cells to rub together. Nick challenged him but in a a very half hearted way. You could tell he could see the bloke's point. Gross. Why do I listen to this nonsense???!

suzannefollowmyvan · 28/08/2015 10:32

I bow to your superior knowledge of his take on Christianity Lotta, don't know how I missed it but I'd not heard him mention it before.

Also (intermittently) listening now, bravo 'Clare' :o ?

suzannefollowmyvan · 28/08/2015 10:35

Did he really say prerogative for provocative?Shock

Sometimes I wonder if I'm actually listening to a spoof phone in a la 'down the line' :o

Lottapianos · 28/08/2015 10:35

Yes indeed. I'm by myself in the office today and said out loud 'good for you girl!' at the end of her call Grin

Maybe we should get ourselves a life? Wink

Lottapianos · 28/08/2015 10:37

Yes really, honestly 'if they want to dress perogative.....' Didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Or maybe just switch off Wink

suzannefollowmyvan · 28/08/2015 10:38

Talk radio in all it's permutations is a vital part of having a lifeWink

Lottapianos · 28/08/2015 10:50

You're right. Lets see it as Zeitgeist 101 Smile

Babycham1979 · 28/08/2015 10:58

Without getting too drawn into a theological conversation about J O'B's religious observance, he has gone on about his Catholicism for many years. He seems to have made the journey from 6th form lefty aetheist to sentimental cultural Catholic.

He regularly discusses the absurdity of religion and specifically Catholicism, and seems to make a point of never actually claiming to believe any of it. If I recall correctly, he refers to taking mass as 'comforting'.

This seems broadly consistent with his 'right-on' credentials.

And, by the way, I loved seeing him and George Moonbat knawing on road-kill on Newsnight last night!!

suzannefollowmyvan · 28/08/2015 11:02

yes zeitgeist 101!
Also, much of it is gobshite, risible, but occasionally there are interesting and insightful callers

And callers from years ago sometimes pop up, eg 'Ken' who used to call talk sport years ago...musical Scottish accent.
He'd start out sounding intelligent but before you know it he'd be quoting the bible.
They sometimes let him on LBC :o ?

suzannefollowmyvan · 28/08/2015 11:04

Perhaps he has a bit of an 'Alain de Botton' (sp?) take on religion? Babycham?

ShelaghTurner · 28/08/2015 11:16

Well I love him and can't bear Ferrari. I used to listen to Ferrari on my drive into work just so my piss was boiled to the right temp to go in and order people around satisfactorily. I jest. But he does get on my tits. I like JOB a lot though and find him an interesting listen regardless of the topic. So there Wink

suzannefollowmyvan · 28/08/2015 11:19

I like JOB too :)
and mostly I just can't jive with NF

ShelaghTurner · 28/08/2015 11:22

He's hust an arsehole. I've listened to LBC since the early 80s and no presenter winds me up the way he does. And it's all about his Boys. "Oh no listener, I know fuck all about girls because I'm a MAN who produced BOYS. Isn't my sperm so male and fabulous?" Twat.

Lottapianos · 28/08/2015 11:23

'I used to listen to Ferrari on my drive into work just so my piss was boiled to the right temp to go in and order people around satisfactorily.'

Grin Yes Ferrari's show does get the blood pumping in the mornings. I love listening to Iain Dale on the way home - he's very fair and calm and has a very soothing voice. It used to be James Whale doing the drive time slot - you do not want all of your bodily fluids boiling while you're on the way home from a long hard day!

JO'B is impossible to not engage with, whatever he's talking about. That's why he's a brilliant talk radio host. I absolutely despair when John Stapleton stands in for him - he sounds like he couldn't give a shiny fig about anything and has no sense of humour at all.

areyoubeingserviced · 28/08/2015 11:28

I can't believe that anyone thinks that Nick Ferrari is an intellectual.
It's not Apri Fools Day , is it?
The man is a tool of the highest order.

Babycham1979 · 28/08/2015 11:31

I actually have LBC and R4 as presets on my radio for the journey into work. That way, I can switch between the dulcet tones of James Naughtie and the smug droning of Ferrari in order to keep my piss bubbling away at the optimum temperature.

Some days, I need to grit my teeth and endure Ferrari, just to re-stoke the fire in my belly; others, I want intelligent analysis and insight, and opt for the Today programme.

I recommend trying this technique; it's most satisfying.

Lottapianos · 28/08/2015 11:41

Babycham, I do something similar - I switch between Ferrari's nonsense and the utter brain dead drivel on Heart FM. Some days I simply cannot face Ferrari at all - its like having someone in my kitchen shouting at me at 7am. Heart plays some alright music and I let the stupid twittering wash over me

OddlyLogical · 28/08/2015 11:47

Ferrari is a tabloid journalist to the core. He's a misogynistic wanker who always goes for the sensationalist spin rather than the facts.

I like JOB. I find him intelligent and funny. I don't always agree with him but he does argue his points well and he challenges people's points.
He stands up for the vulnerable and has refused to drop issues like historical child abuse and MP trofiteering

Big fan of Nick Abbott too.

suzannefollowmyvan · 28/08/2015 12:03

?I flit between LBC, R4, R5 and world service, but tend to go to LBC first partly because much of the beeb stuff is available as podcast

SwedishEdith · 28/08/2015 23:09

Is this the grumpy bloke who's been on Newsnight this week?
