Wink

What a truly fantastic film.
I am now looking into watching the stage show. I laughed, cried and shouted at the screen.

Justifying this pointless thread with a Q.

So... How many of you have watched a film years after it has been released and thought WHY didn't I watch this sooner? Grin

Wow - my thread title didn't like that did it.

Les miserables BTW!

Yanbu, but only because you loved it.

If you hated it you would be vvvvvvvvvvv u.

SecretNutellaFix · 24/08/2015 11:36

I've watched some films years after, and they were popular and I thought I'm so glad I didn't spend actual money to go see this.

Birdsgottafly · 24/08/2015 11:41

I agree with you about LM, I watched it, because there was nothing else on, when it came out on Sky.

I never knew BW was in Pulp Fiction, then wondered why I'd missed out on watching it.

I stubbornly refused to watch Titanic when it came out because of the hype and then wondered why the hell, was I ridiculously stubborn.

That's happened a few times.

I'm often disappointed with the hyped up Horror films at the Cinema, though.

Bumbledumb · 24/08/2015 11:44

If you are BU, what am I? I actually have Les Mis on DVD which I bought years ago. Don't know when I'll get around to ever watching it.

YourFredIsBoring · 24/08/2015 11:49

Bumbledumb - make time to watch it. You have to watch it! It is spectacular!

I do the same with certain hyped up films. I get stubborn and think - oh for goodness sake, I bet it's rubbish and then often end up eating my words.

OP posts:
SecretNutellaFix · 24/08/2015 11:50

I've been the same with books though.

Harry Potter in particular. I thoroughly enjoyed them, and still do. The fourth one was due to be published when I read the first three.

BackInTheRealWorld · 24/08/2015 11:52

Ooooh I haven't watched Les mis yet, I recorded it last night though.
Is it suitable to watch with an 11 yr old?

YourFredIsBoring · 24/08/2015 11:52

Secretnutellafix - I am a Harry Potter addict!

Still my favourite films ever!

OP posts:
YourFredIsBoring · 24/08/2015 11:54

BITRW - I would say it depends on your 11 year olds maturity.

There's prostitution, death of a child and a few other bits! It isn't hugely graphic, but still quite distressing.

BackInTheRealWorld · 24/08/2015 12:00

She is very mature and sensible for her age but I don't want to put her through anything unnecessarily harrowing? Actually I don't want to me through that either, is it uplifting at the end or just a misery fest? Grin

I remember we watched boy in the striped pyjamas together and we were WRECKS at the end!

BackInTheRealWorld · 24/08/2015 12:02

And Hachi a dogs tale nearly killed us!! Sad
I was cross about that one as it was described as heartwarming. HEARTWARMING?? I sobbed so hard I pulled a muscle! Angry

StephanieBeacham · 24/08/2015 12:03

I watched the beginning of an old version of les mis on the telly about 2 years ago.

It was the most appalling, sentimental, manipulative pile of toss I'd ever had the misfortune to watch and it went off after about 10 minutes as I could stand it no more.

Many of the musicals seem to be similar - highly predictable, cliche ridden bollocks.

(sorry)

Oh and that woman on the trailer with the bad make up is in that awful bridesmaids film isn't she? I can't see her as anything else after watching that too many times

SecretNutellaFix · 24/08/2015 12:09

The last scene, where Valjean dies is a tear jerker, because of the whole build up that comes before it.

I refuse to watch Marley and Me. I read the book, during my lunchtimes at work. Big mistake. If the book is enough to make me cry, there's no way I'm watching the film.

Sparrowlegs248 · 24/08/2015 12:11

Yanbu - there are so many films i haven't seen. I did go to see les mis at the cinema though, took mother. It really is fabulous. I didn't watch last night but am doing today - dvd.

I got goosebumps at the trailer.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2015 12:14

I love a convert i saw it at the cinema and was hooked i watched it last night for the millionth time

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2015 12:16

Marley and me is torture i was visiting a friend and she stuck it on oh myy godd there was tears and snot i was a frigging mess

whatsagoodusername · 24/08/2015 12:19

BackInTheRealWorld - I read a somewhat abridged version of Les Mis at 11. It started my lifelong love of Les Mis.

I would warn her that it can be very sad and unfair at points, but it's a brilliant story. It's not a happy ending exactly, but not sad. Uplifting is probably a good description.

The movie is not especially graphic, but there are a lot of deaths.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2015 12:21

Hatchi was on 1 afternoon on sky oh a film about a dog lovely Shock

almapudden · 24/08/2015 12:21

Me too! I'm going to see the stage show too. Have become a bit obsessed with the soundtrack Grin

leccybill · 24/08/2015 12:22

I liked the film, but prefer the stage show.
The film verged on cringey for me - I know it's a musical but there were some storytelling bits when dialogue would have suited more.

I do love all of the songs though, they are just so, well, singey.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2015 12:23

Death prostitution probably death due to STI because of the prostitution its such a cheery filmGrin

RattusRattus · 24/08/2015 12:25

Oh it's brilliant isn't it. Only just got round to watching the Life of Pi last night. Totally amazing!!

RattusRattus · 24/08/2015 12:26

BTW what age would you show the film of les Mis to? It's a 12 but I have nearly 10 and 11year olds here who really want to watch it. I'm not sure I can explain the prostitution thing to them.

CatMilkMan · 24/08/2015 12:26

10th anniversary dream cast with lyrics on YouTube for free, if it starts playing half way through just restart it.
I highly recommend the 25th anniversary show, norm Lewis and Alfie bone are fantastic but they fucked up with casting a Jonas brother.
I also just booked tickets for the latest les mis in London, I think it's the 30th anniversary.
