to have asked woman in the supermarket to stop screaming near the baby

I overloaded the trolley (one of those small ones) in Tesco this morning and a bottle of sparkling water fell out. The lady at the checkout (self service) did this stupid loud exaggerated scream and said 'oh make sure you don't open that first!' I just smiled and nodded but it was a bit embarrassing as everyone looked!

Then the same thing happened again and she did that stupid scream again so I said can you be quiet please, the baby is asleep.

Everyone was glaring at me but she was really annoying me.

Am I just sleep deprived and rude or did I have a point?

Grin @ grunt.

I really dislike over-reacting as described above. No reaction is perfectly fine. Neither will have an impact on whether the bottle smashes.

sanfairyanne · 23/08/2015 13:55

the funny bit though is that everyone glared at the op, not the checkout woman, so i do wonder who was overall the louder

SurlyCue · 23/08/2015 13:56

haven't got much tolerance for this kind of attention seeking shrieking.

Yep this.

An overloaded trolley through the self checkout? No wonder people were staring, especially if in the queue waiting to pay for a couple of items Shock

bigcomfyduvet · 23/08/2015 14:08

It was a special small trolley. I only had the requisite fifteen items or less don't worry Hmm I just can't hold a basket and DD.

Good point

bigcomfyduvet · 23/08/2015 14:10

I can assure you I was not loud, I think they glared as I was sharp which I do regret but she did startle me and baby.

If you want peace and quiet for your sleeping baby then stay at home.

WorraLiberty · 23/08/2015 14:12

I'd have macheted the supermarket woman to death with my Tesco Clubcard.

I do think there's s difference between peace and quiet and screaming!

Plus she goes to sleep in the car anyway

Affected Carrie Bradshaw screeching boil my piss. YWNBU.

Binkybix · 23/08/2015 14:59

Loud people annoy me. YANBU!

Unhappyuser · 23/08/2015 15:02

Babies need to get used to noise otherwise you'll end up having to tiptoe around in case you wake them

bigcomfyduvet · 23/08/2015 15:03

Oh noise is fine but really loud noise right near you for no good reason - Not so fine!

miaowroar · 23/08/2015 15:23

I lack patience with ott screamers too. They really startle you and get you worried and stressed - and all for nothing. Then it's a huge joke. I wouldn't dream of screaming near a sleeping baby and if I did so accidentally I would feel terrible and apologise.

MadamArcatiAgain · 23/08/2015 15:24

A bit of advice.Don't train your baby to need silence to sleep!! You sound most dreadfully PFB and a bit rude.
Lets home your little snowflake never screams when you are supermarket shopping, eh?

bigcomfyduvet · 23/08/2015 15:26

She doesn't need silence to sleep, but there is a bit of a difference between silence and screaming. I'd never normally say anything but she started in my arms (she was in a sling) so it must have made her jump.

I thought you were uneasonable until someone mentioned the Carrie Bradshaw scream. That shit should be illegal.

stayanotherday · 23/08/2015 15:42

Yanbu. There's no need for it. Btw, small children crying etc. This is an adult.

RachelZoe · 23/08/2015 15:44

Yanbu at all. I loathe histrionic reactions to small things like a bug or someone dropping someone etc, beyond irritating.

Bellebella · 23/08/2015 15:50

Yeah she could have not shieked but you sound a little precious about your baby. Your baby did not wake but moved a little which actually could have been because of you packing bags or actually because you dropped the bottle twice not because of the woman at all. I think you were a little rude but what does it matter now. Both you and the sales assistant will have forgotten about by your next shopping trip

Bahhhhhumbug · 23/08/2015 15:57

My DH would've been on your side , he hates 'screechy women' as he calls them. Especially the ones who spot each other in the pub and scream and run towards each other 'I haven't seen you for aaaaaages' like it's a fecking episode of Surprise Surprise . DH usuually comments they probably haven't seen each other since lunchtime. I have an ear problem which means that really loud shrill noises actually pysically hurt my ears so I am not a fan myself. Yadnbu

DocHollywood · 23/08/2015 16:01

Would you have said the same thing if a child had screamed or was it just because she's a lowly checkout operator? And why did you need to say anything? Were you going to drop another one? She wasn't screaming at everything going through the scanner because in that case you wouldn't have been unreasonable to say something.
