To have found this a bit awkward?

I got the keys to my first house yesterday. The people who I bought it off were very house proud and you could tell they loved the colour scheme in the house, the carpets etc. I got up at 7 today and have spent the day stripping wallpaper and went to b&q to get paint. I also cut the carpet downstairs because it's hideous and I was hoping there'd be lovely flagstones under because it's an old cottage (and there was Smile).

Anyway at about 2pm a car pulled up outside and the old owners got out Shock. Said they'd come round in case I had any questions about the boiler etc even though they told me everything on the phone yesterday. They came into the living room and there was a really long horrible silence whilst they surveyed all the walls with wallpaper ripped off and the carpet that I'd slashed with a Stanley knife. He then went upstairs to show me something on the boiler and saw that I'd painted the walls in the bedroom and ripped off the horrible boudoir wallpaper. He made some comment about me making my mark very quickly.

Aibu to think they put me in a bit of an awkward situation?! I still felt like it was their house a bit Blush

That's a bit weird, Confused

MrsBertMacklin · 22/08/2015 16:04

'Made your mark'? It's your house!

Cheeky beggars.

juneybean · 22/08/2015 16:05

Ah stuff them, it's your house now! Well done for getting on it so quickly! I've been in mine a year and I've only done one room!

ToastedStoat · 22/08/2015 16:05

I can see how it would have felt awkward, but you definitely didn't do anything wrong! It's your house now and you have the right to do anything you want to it.

Congrats on the new home!

Palomb · 22/08/2015 16:05

Well you have been very industrious in less than 12 daylight hours! He was probably impressed with your work ethic.

GarthAlgar · 22/08/2015 16:06

I know, I felt so awkward! I don't understand why they came, the estate agent rang me yesterday to say the keys were there and that the vendor wanted a word and he told me everything over the phone that he told me today Confused

Thank you! But I've been itching to get on since I put my offer in 10 weeks ago. I'd been dreaming about getting rid of that wallpaper so I just wanted to go and get it done Grin

Good on you!

formerbabe · 22/08/2015 16:08

Why did you let them in?

A simple...'no need to pop over, your previous instructions were more than adequate. Bye' would have been a reasonable response.

mirren3 · 22/08/2015 16:09

That is seriously weird, I doubt they'll be back now,but if they do show up, keep them on the doorstep.
It sounds like they do still think it's their house. Hopefully they will have moved too far away to pop by often.Smile

RachelZoe · 22/08/2015 16:09

Some people can't let go. When we bought our current house the previous owners turned up a couple of times like this and called us etc wanting to mention and point out things, the wife cried when she saw what we had done to the front of the house Confused. Some people get very attached to houses, we bought it seriously cheap for the area so I think they may have had money problems and had been forced to sell. It was sad and very awkward.

SpaggyBollocks · 22/08/2015 16:10

ugh, the previous tenants in my house did a similar thing.

they had every wall painted brown. the shades varied from room to room but it was all brown. she told us at length about how recently she's done it all and how we wouldn't need to change a thing when we moved in.

she came round to collect post (still lives in the same village) and saw us with our sandpaper and paint pots. she just sucked in her bottom lip and said, "oh. you're decorating."

very awkward. dp is better at confrontation than me and just said breezily, "well that's what you do when you move into a new house. BYE!"

GarthAlgar · 22/08/2015 16:10

I don't know former, it still doesn't feel like my house and they were clearly to desperate to come in because the front door was open anyway and they were both hovering at the entrance!

OP posts:
Costacoffeeplease · 22/08/2015 16:10

Why did you let them in? I would have just said 'thanks but I think we covered everything yesterday'. I think they've got a bit of a cheek really, it's your house now, not theirs

formerbabe · 22/08/2015 16:12

they were clearly to desperate to come in because the front door was open anyway and they were both hovering at the entrance

Confused face and a "yes" delivered in an impatient manner is the best response to this!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 22/08/2015 16:12

I had a similar thing happen! Old owner turned up with their new address as their redirection order wasn't in place yet.
There was I, paint roller in hand, covering up their old decor. Except some of it looked quite new.
Still hideous though, what sort of person paints a small kitchen bright orange?
He didn't say anything, just gave me a funny look.
Congratulations on your new home!

GarthAlgar · 22/08/2015 16:13

She cried Rachel?! That's just awful. I wouldn't go round if it belonged to someone else, I just wouldn't feel comfortable doing so.

Spaggy some people are very strange. There's a white marble fireplace that takes pride of place in the living room and it's one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. The only reason I've not taken a sledgehammer to it is because I can't afford to get a new one. Can you imagine if I had Grin

pictish · 22/08/2015 16:14

Ohh ha ha I think this is hilarious! Grin

OP it's your house now, so tough tits. That's the way it goes.

GarthAlgar · 22/08/2015 16:14

Hahah Cigars I really wonder what goes through some people's minds when they decorate!!

Costa and former I'll definitely not let them in if they turn up again!

The previous owners of our house would be very upset if they saw it now. Like you we started quickly, I ripped up all but one carpet (all smelt like they had let the cat use it as a litter tray), took shelves down, knocked out a horrid fireplace (felt amazing) and ripped off wallpaper. Then painted the entire place, as the colour scheme was all Brian, or dirty brown as my husband called it. Goodness knows what they would think if they saw the garden. I don't feel bad. It's our house and also they failed to tell us the heating wasn't working quite as it should and had turned off the water to the outside tap, so we wouldn't know the pipe was burst. Very underhanded people. Actually perhaps I should invite them round to the new and improved decor ????

Ewock · 22/08/2015 16:19

Brown not Brian!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 22/08/2015 16:21

I have little sympathy for them, what were they thinking?

Congratulations on your new house.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/08/2015 16:22

Our buyers wandered around our house raving about our colour scheme. They moved in and totally gutted it. Their house, their choice.

Three years later they brought our next house off us and did exactly the same thing.

I've promised them first dibs if we ever move out of this one.

GarthAlgar · 22/08/2015 16:23

Ewock I was wondering what a Brian colour scheme looked like Grin. Surely if you sell a house though you accept that not everyone has the same tastes as you and would probably want to redecorate?! Yet more proof that there's nothing stranger than folk.
