Wedding disappointment/ gift recommendation

My friend is getting married in few days. it's all rather disappointing - classy and well thought out. so wedding at 4.30pm and then the restaurant straight after - a 5 min walk. No waiting around, everyone that is invited gets fed, no guest hierarchy.

I was also informed that there is a park by the church and play area in the restaurant. oh and we can use the couple's hotel room if DD gets tired. Also they do not wish for any gifts but a book with a dedication would be welcome or a bottle of wine.

so what book would you recommend? it doesn't have to be coupley/ wedding-related, just a cool book.

I often buy books of love poetry as wedding present. I think Anne Carson's translations of Sappho are particularly lovely.

ChameleonCircuit · 21/08/2015 11:08

How bloody rude of them to be so inclusive and considerate!! Grin

Sorry I can't recommend a book, my reading is all rather shallow. Not sure they'd appreciate a David Baldacci paperback.... How about a nice bottle of Cabernet?

ImperialBlether · 21/08/2015 11:10

Absolute and utter selfishness!

Are they into art? Music? Novels?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 21/08/2015 11:12

thanks jello. I don't know the future husband, hopefully he wouldn't take exception Grin.

Any idea what type of books they like to read / things they're interested in?

SaucyJack · 21/08/2015 11:14

A B&W "arty" porn book.

Theycallmemellowjello · 21/08/2015 11:15

Hee!!! Not all of them are about ladies actually! And even the ones that are about ladies are often just about a nice girl getting married or something.

Northumberlandlass · 21/08/2015 11:19

I would try & find a 1950's type, perfect wife manual Smile either that or an original 'The Joy of Sex' (although I suppose they might get a few)

Being sensible, a book about wine or history of art. I always love poetry books!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 21/08/2015 11:21

so the love sex theme is twice recommended Grin.

well, I've known my friend now for 18 years but I live over here and she's back in my home country. She studied English at uni and she likes arty farty stuff and she likes sex. he is an economic journalist [insert an emoticon of your choice] and I know nothing about him in terms of interests. I guess he must like sex too.

So I'm thinking a bottle of English wine and a poetry/ sex book?

Mumsnet cookery book?

SouthWesterlyWinds · 21/08/2015 11:22

Where are they going on honeymoon? A phrase book or a book about the country they'll be visiting maybe? Or do they like cooking? It does sound like they would like to build up a kind of link library so if you know what genre they're into, for example fantasy then you could buy them the last Terry Pratchett. Or a first edition of your friends favourite novel. Abebooks.co.uk is good for finding out of print or old books. Hope that helps!

SouthWesterlyWinds · 21/08/2015 11:25

Cookery book! Grin

squeaver · 21/08/2015 11:26

A nice edition of John Donne's love poems. High-brow and filthy.

NoMilkNoSugar · 21/08/2015 11:32

What about a book about the town/ city they are getting married/met in? 'Xx in photographs' or 'an aerial view of xx' type of books.

Or said towns sex night clubs if that's more interesting?

Northumberlandlass · 21/08/2015 11:36

OR a Couples Counselling book / when you lose the spark in a marriage? I may be slightly cynical.
But it would lead to great MN thread of "weirdest wedding present"

Starlingsintheslipstream · 21/08/2015 11:40

Folio books are lovely. They've got a section for romantic gifts on there. Am not doing links at the moment . Could be something suitable?

onehellofaride · 21/08/2015 11:41

theycallme could you link to the Anne Carson? It sounds perfect for a wedding I have soon.

Sorry for the hijack op!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 21/08/2015 11:41

No, she's done the couple's counselling already with the previous one. Might be a sensitive subject Grin

Love poetry. I second the John Donne recommendation, most beautiful love poems ever, but a general book of love poetry would be good.

Theycallmemellowjello · 21/08/2015 11:46

www.amazon.co.uk/If-Not-Winter-Fragments-Sappho/dp/1844080811 - this is the book! I do recommend it - the poems are quite beautiful. Also I really like the idea of them being so ancient and alien but also being about the familiar subject of love. And because they are fragments they're quite short and very easy to dip into, so it doesn't feel like you're buying them some great Homeric epic or something that they'll never read.

Bunbaker · 21/08/2015 11:46

Best check whether they are into poetry. Neither of us would have been ecstatic over a book of poetry and it would have been "recycled" at some point.

ABunchOfGrapes · 21/08/2015 11:47

Beautiful book www.bookdepository.com/Tippi-Sylvie-Robert/9781770070295
