Sprained ankle swelling back up

Is that normal? Sprained or twisted it on Friday, painful over the weekend and needed to keep it raised and iced Saturday but less Sunday, did a bigish outing with the kids yesterday (museum/ exhibition so quite a lot of walking and standing but not exactly strenuous in the way an outdoor outing would be) - ankle swole up and throbbed by end of day. Today have had a "normal" day - indoor and garden stuff in the morning, out and about a bit this afternoon running errands, delivering birthday party invites, bit of time in a playground and taking kids to a sport class which involves walking up 3 flights of stairs - ankle is now twice the size of the uninjured one again.

DH thinks I should go to the doctor tomorrow . doctor is good in that its always possible to get an on the day apt but there will be a wait, which is a massive PITA with 3 kids in tow (could palm them/ one/ some off maybe but its a hassle in itself as each would go to a different family and I prefer for playing with friends to be a genuine kids want to play together arrangement not a favour to me, unless its actually really, really necessary - plus the 3 families I'd usually ask/ the kids play with the most and who would ask me are on holiday...)

Normal for a sprained ankle to swell back up to twice the size once you start using it normally again, or do I need to go to the doctor?

OOOPS!

This was NOT meant to go in AIBU! Meant to post in chat!

Would report and have it moved but I think MNHQ have other things on their minds!

Erm... AIBU not to go to doctor? Blush

Do you have (sorry) a walk in centre? Possibly more suitable than a GP.

Might just need more rest, although when I had a similar problem I had a partial tear on a ligament which needed a bit of physio advise to make sure it healed right. A bad ankle can affect knees, hips and your lower back too. Worth getting it checked out.

Yes, this is what Minor Injuries is for. They may need to x-ray so check their X-ray hours and head down there.

But if you're able to walk it's most likely a low grade sprain which needs RICE treatment - crucially, the rest bit! (Speaking as a frequently sprained person with no medical training btw).

I would highly recommend some physio sooner or later as sprains can take a long time to heal - up to a year in my case - and a physio will help you strengthen up so it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the replies.

We have a minor injuries unit at the hospital but not a walk in clinic - guess I'll see how it is in the morning!
