To wonder what the frig I should be eating

Getting so very tired of wondering if what I am putting in my mouth is 'good' for me or not, because apparently every single foodstuff is evil.

FWIW I don't have a weight problem nor a diagnosed ED, but I do want to eat the best I can except it all seems so difficult.

I shouldn't eat too much sugar so that rules out most breakfast cereals, milkshakes, juices, squashes and fruits. No diary or it will make my acne worse. I shouldn't eat wheat or yeast products to avoid candida so that's a hell of a lot of carbs gone. No caffeine...No processed foods...fine, I've stopped buying them anyway, but I'm left with nuts to snack on and just meat and veg for meals, which is nice but rather tedious and expensive.

Someone give me a slap please, I'm hungry :(

It's hard to eat well. But I am a firm believer that your body will take nutrients from whatever it gets given, and maximize what it can.

Age has a lot to do with it too, when you are young you are bound to have great skin, energy etc because your cells multiply and regenerate quicker. It's hard to look and feel good on Pot Noodles when you are 40 though, it takes more work and a better diet.

snacks - a sandwich. A piece of fruit, a banana is good.

DinosaursRoar · 20/08/2015 18:02

I find if I have a proper breakfast, I don't feel the need to snack mid-morning, whereas eating a light breakfast or breakfast cereals or pastries would leave me starving mid-morning. I'd go for scrambled eggs and bacon, or porridge with fruit (not syrup or anything like that on it) will mean I get through until at least midday before I start feeling like I need something.

Snoozebox · 20/08/2015 18:38

But bacon gives you bowel cancer :(

I suppose I could try porridge with non-dairy milk again, I quite liked that before but then it was ready-break and probably sugar-filled!

I'm a long time vegetarian (since I was 14yo) and recently went onto the Low FODMAP diet on advice from hospital.

It is fecking hard but has made a huge huge difference to my bowels (TMI) wrt to bloating .

Oddly, I don't miss dairy (but I still eat feta) cannot eat hard cheddar (painful) .

I miss proper bread, the GF isn't the same.

I eat small amount of dark chocolate and because it is less easy to find, it is less tempting to grab a bag of Revels or something. I've had no milk/white chocolate at all in the last 8 weeks (that's longer than Lent Grin )

I'm hoping I can tweak a bit and re-introduce some foods but I know that even a small amount of something like Quorn sausage causes me grief.

Cherryblossomsinspring · 20/08/2015 18:48

Snooze box it takes me less than 3 minutes in the evening. Panasonic breadmaker, can't recommend it enough. Ready for 7am.

Snoozebox · 20/08/2015 19:08

Milk chocolate tastes quite wrong to me now. Too bland...especially something really palm oily like Dairy Milk.

How long does bread made in a bread maker last? I might look into getting one!

I bought 2 bars of Bournville and it was really dire, like icing sugar Confused

I'm tempted to buy a breadmaker but I know I wouldn't use it

YeOldeTrout · 20/08/2015 19:19

Breadmaker bread doesn't last more than 36 hours. Those preservatives have to do something, you know.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 20/08/2015 19:24

That's my problem with bread- we don't get through enough to make it (although I have a bread maker and second their brilliance)

I have looked at giving up red meat. It appeared close to impossible to meet my daily iron needs (I don't eat red meat daily and therefore don't meet my iron intake every day)

Indantherene · 20/08/2015 19:29

Just to muddy the waters, I went vegetarian at the age of 16. I was dx with bowel cancer at the age of 47.

My father ate meat at every meal for the whole of his 62 years and never got bowel cancer.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 20/08/2015 19:35

Bowel cancer has a pretty strong genetic element

Indantherene · 20/08/2015 19:44

Not in my case. (I have checked and double checked :( )

WorktoLive · 20/08/2015 19:45

I find that we eat breadmaker bread faster than it goes off, but that is because it is nice and we are greedy.

But I think it's OK for a couple of days from being baked and then good for toast for a day or two more.

With bread, it shouldn't remain usable for days on end. If it does it is stuffed full of preservatives and other nasties that are undesirable if you are trying to eat food as natural as possible.

We only ever make the smallest loaf and often slice and freeze some for toast later.

Bulbasaur · 20/08/2015 19:50

All things in moderation.

Chocolate is a nice treat, not a food group. As long as you take this approach to food, and eat mostly healthy stuff, a junk food snack once in a while is fine. So don't be afraid to throw in a few grains or carbs.

Air popped popcorn (use coconut oil or canola) is a healthy snack.

Also, look up some recipes on pinterest or something, there's all sorts of things you can do with just meat and veggies.

CarlaJones · 20/08/2015 20:19

I think you can still eat red meat as it's nutritious, just not every day.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 20/08/2015 21:47

Sorry Indantherene I didn't mean to sound insensitive, I just meant there is a strong element of genetics, not that it had to be with you Flowers

Indantherene · 21/08/2015 15:00

No offence taken Grin
