To think that high street stores do not use humans to test their clothing products?

Bought a pair of trousers from New Look, size 10 (usual size), however I struggled to even button them up Confused

So I went back to buy the size 12, which are huge on me! They sit on my hips until I take 2 steps forward then they're halfway down my bum. I checked the sizes on both, and there's nothing odd or misshapen about my body.

This is a regular occurance, in some shops I fit into a 6 and some I have to buy a 12. What the fuck is going on?! I can only guess that high street clothing chains use zoo animals to measure their clothes as none of it makes fucking sense! And don't get me started on tights!

I've actually had this too in newlook! I'm a 10, before that I was a 12 but definitely a 10. Have had jeans before in that size and still wear them.

I see the last pair of jeans that I love and they are a size 8. I buy them anyway thinking it will spur me on to lose a little bit of extra weight and they are bloody BAGGY Shock they're supposed to be skinny jeans, I was expecting to have to do "the dance" to get them past my thighs.

Is this vanity sizing hitting again or just new look poor quality?

Hamiltoes · 20/08/2015 03:56

Gag Oooh I hate that, I'm 5'3 so on the smaller side of average and I really struggle to get tights that don't give me heavy hole Angry

Baconyum · 20/08/2015 04:04

It's a problem for kids too. Since when are all age 5 kids the same height, waist size, leg length etc?

And don't get me started on having ample bosom! Just once I'd like tonfind a blouse that fits on the shoulders and waist and doesn't gape at the chest!

God knows what they fit tall clothing on. Oompa lumpas possibly. 34" leg isn't long, let alone 32" which most offer long leg in. And if you do find length, they aren't often available in smaller sizes. And actually long enough in the leg very rarely allows long enough in the torso. I have virtually no hips/arse, so I can get extra torso length from jeans if legs are long enough, anyone with normal hips, let alone an hour glass shape must really struggle in long length.
And no idea who they're doing any hip/ waist ratio for, as someone straight up and down I have excess hip/arse fit for anything that fits my waist, yet I know people with a normal difference between hips and waist don't have enough allowance. I suspect they make them for somewhere inbetween the 2, so they end up fitting nobody.
Yy on same proportions whatever the size, no use to anyone.
They should make all pant length longer, shorter people can at least get them taken up. And stop with the vanity sizing, I'm not that fussed about different fits in different shops, but it makes it extremely hard and expensive to get smaller sizes.
And some clothes assistants need to stop with the judging. I've asked places if I can order 4's or even a 2 in generous fit for dd ( v tall 11yr old with typical child shape still) and you sometimes get glared at like your harbouring a freak. Same people also do it to larger friends and thus need to fuck off

Oh and WHY do they think that slim=short and larger=tall. I often see clothes on rails in size order and the length of things go up as the sizes go up!

THIS is my pet peeve. I have the temerity to be tall but not a brick shithouse, and I always have to decide between 'long enough sleeves but tighter than a gnat's arse round the ribs' or 'nicely body-skimming, sleeves halfway up to my elbows'.

You're right, they must use zoo animals for sizing. Grin

Also, places like Toast seem to use yurt patterns and forget to scale them down.

Changerazelea · 20/08/2015 14:11

YANBU however retailers do use models who they choose specifically for the body type they want to sell to/believe their customers are! Having worked with most retailers this is usually a 5 7" model on the small side of size 12 with athletic build so patterns are cut and fits are done in most garments to this model. This is why the curvier customer will sometimes struggle!

The reason for the same sizes fitting differently is due to sewing tolerances in production in factories, whereby any given garment can be +-5% smaller/larger than the measurement chart for that size. This is why you must never buy anything other than why you have tried on and are happy with.

My wardrobe ranges from a size 6 to a size 12. I have a figure (bum in particular) a bit like J-Lo (but much less pert) and all I can say is she must get everything altered! Clothes hate me.

goodasitgets · 20/08/2015 15:55

Some brands are doing... Asos curve are having a fit model day (I got an invite) to try on their stuff and give feedback

Noodledoodledoo · 20/08/2015 16:34

I made the mistake a few years back of trying a navy pair of smart crop trousers in M&S. Fit perfectly - did up easily, could sit, walk etc no issues. So I grabbed a black pair in the exact same style thinking great sorted for work for the summer. The black pair the waist band wouldn't even meet!!!

I need new trousers for my return to work in a couple of weeks and I am avoiding it like the plague as I hate it!!

ijustwannadance · 20/08/2015 17:01

I know i'm not the only person who has a long torso and i get sick of dresses and coats where the waistline sits far too high and looks ridiculous.

NotCitrus · 20/08/2015 17:05

Apparently with laser cutting they can stack higher and higher piles of cloth and cut them and get them sewn, and obviously the ones at the bottom of the pile will come out rather randomly shaped!

Which would be why I can buy two pairs of trousers in the identical style and size in the same colour and have one fit perfectly and the other not even do up. Next, I'm looking at you.

My problem is designers assuming that women's crotches and waists are about 4 inches apart. Even 'high-waisted' items are about 5 inches below my tummy button! Only advice I have for people with postnatal tummy is to look at expensive designer labels that do suits etc - they know their market (middle-aged career women)!

Thurlow · 20/08/2015 17:08

I have never in my life worn a pair of trousers or jeans without a belt as well. And I really don't have a ridiculous hip to waist ratio. I've never understood it.

The sizing one that really surprised me a while ago was teen clothes. I'm only 5'1 so I quite often by teen clothing. I went to New Look, found a nice winter coat, just picked up the one that looked about the right size, fitted fine (including doing up over a not teeny pair of boobs)... took it home and it was age 10-11 Shock Christ, what do they think the average 16 year old looks like?!

littlebrownbag · 20/08/2015 22:27

I am another with the problem of gaping waist on trousers. I remember trying on a pair in M&S - they fit my bum and hips but were big enough at the waist that I could take off the trousers without undoing the zip and buttons. Hmm. It's the vast gaps at the back of the trousers that get me - who are the women with fat backs that they are fitting for?!

Then I spent some time living in the U.S., and discovered Eddie Bauer Blakely shape pants. They fit me perfectly - I did a little dance in the fitting room as it had been years since I bought trousers that fit me! I stocked up in various colours as I wear them for work (perfect for business casual office wear) and now I've returned to the UK I'm worried about what I'm going to do when they wear out. Hit online shopping and shell out for international postage I guess.

Actually, retailers in America seem to be a lot better at acknowledging women come in differing shapes - pants trousers come in three waist to hip ratio: straight (apple), slightly curvy (average) and curvy (pear). I suppose being a much bigger market means the economics make it worthwhile.
