To wash everything together at 30c?

It has honestly never occurred to me to do differently . I separate my wash into light colours, whites and darks and change all bedding weekly and towels often but never separate kitchen or bsthroom towels or even cloths that we've used to clean the floor from anything else and wash all at 30. Just reading other threads where people seem to wash at 90 and wondering . Disclaimer : we don't use flannels ! Also been doing it this way for 23 yes and no one ill or dead from it

00100001 · 18/08/2015 07:34

I separate my washing otherwise my kigyra get all dull and grey

CJCreggsmyhero · 18/08/2015 07:42

washing underwear and towels at 30 degrees will not clean them properly at all.
so you will have traces of faeces, urine, smegma, skin flakes, sweat and vaginal fluid all mixing in with your other clothes and into other washes.

Onecurrantbun · 18/08/2015 08:06

smegma

I don't wash at 30 anymore I go for 40. We have solar panels so that's ok, right?

Totally baffled by that Dwttol stuff you put in to a cool wash - does anyone use that? Surely if you've "switched to 30" for eco reasons then you don't want to put disinfectant down the drain? And if 30 is adequate for you you don't need it?

whois · 18/08/2015 08:10

Everything at 30 or 40 except sometimes towels if they've been left in a heap on the floor and smell a bit off.

NoDramaForTheLlama · 18/08/2015 08:14

Wash at 40 unless in a rush and I'll use the 30 as it's quicker. I do lights/whites together darks/blacks together bedsheets and towels.

00100001 · 18/08/2015 08:16

wwwooooOOOOoooOoo

I did actually die from washing at 20° for the last ten years or so.

Surely clothes other that. Undies and towels get sweat etc on them??

00100001 · 18/08/2015 08:21

Interestingly washing machines don't always get up to the temperature stated

fail link, sorry

Georgethesecond · 18/08/2015 08:22

My laundry cycles are a bit random, though my washes are very thoroughly obsessively sorted.

Can anyone help with getting the pits of a teenager's white cotton school shirts not to whiff? He showers daily because I make him but he's a bit lax with using deodorant. The smell seems to reactivate with the heat sometimes when I iron them, so I know they are not properly clean.

00100001 · 18/08/2015 08:29

Baking soda, make up a paste and apply to areas, wash on a cool wash (shock horror) and repeat.

Make sure he's wearing cotton :)

00100001 · 18/08/2015 08:29

Oh, you need to leave the paste in for some time, an hour or so

KumiOri · 18/08/2015 08:34

george soaking for a few hours in cold water+ bio powder works.
or a hot wash
or that dettol stuff

Backonthebike · 18/08/2015 09:17

I chuck Zoflora in to kill bacteria and wash at 30 degrees

Perpendiculous · 18/08/2015 09:37

I wash at 30 most of the time. Occasionally was whites and lighter coloured separately to darker colours but that's only when I'm washing white things which is rare.

I don't understand this deep fear of bacteria that some mumsnetters seem to have.

Sallystyle · 18/08/2015 10:00

I do the same.

The only thing that gets washed at a higher temp and separated is my works uniform. That gets washed on its own at 90c, as that is the rules and I work in health care.

MummaV · 18/08/2015 10:01

I chuck everything in together. 30 quick wash for a small load. 60 for a large load or towels/bedding. Mine take either 30 mins or 60mins so works well for me.
Anything DD has stained (poo/sick/dribble) on gets soaked in stain remover first (in a bowl specifically for this purpose) then thrown in a 60 wash.

My washing detergent seems to turn dribble stains blue on white stuff and yellow on coloured stuff unless soaked in stain remover first (I've tried lots of different temp washes and it doesn't make a difference, also tried a different detergent). Anyone know why???

suicra · 18/08/2015 10:08

Rarely separate colours. Usually mix between a quick 30 mins at 40degrees and the 1hr30 at 40 degrees. Towels get 50 degrees and dish cloths/tea towels get a dash of Milton added to the wash.

Dowser · 18/08/2015 10:10

I wash everything at 30. No one gets faeces or urine or smegma on anything. That's what baths, sinks, soap and personal hygiene is all about isn't it?

I'm very precious about my bedding. Lots of white sheets and white based duvet covers. Nothing goes in with them. Woe betide mr Dowser if any of his socks sneak in. Joking. He's very good about that. Everything is spun twice and goes on the line to dry.

Shirts are hung on hangers outside. I dont like tumbling washing. I think it ruins it so quickly.

When I got married for the first time my mum did my washing and mil did his for the few months until we got our own machine.

I couldn't believe his mum put everything in together and his shirts all came back ruined.

My aunt used to wash jumpers put them between brown paper and lay them between the mattress and the base.. They must have been just a little damp. I tried it once and it was just too much faff and I got the same effect laying it over an airer.

I handle the washing very carefully. I fold it carefully and apart from a few of OH's shirts and trousers there's virtually no ironing. I couldn't just dump it all in a basket.

( I'm also a scrupulous packer of suitcases as well ;-)

WorktoLive · 18/08/2015 10:17

What germs do towels get on them that necessitates hotter washing than other items (clothes, underwear etc) Confused.

Everything in our house goes in together at 40 C except I separate out my delicate jumpers, bras etc for a hand wash programme in the machine.

We don't have any white clothing - it is too much hassle as is usually ruined if you drop food on it and needs separate washing. Avoid it totally, makes life simpler.

chanelfreak · 18/08/2015 10:21

Never knew you could use Zoflora in the washing machine!

I wash at 40, but towels and bed linen get washed at 60.

sticklebrickstickle · 18/08/2015 10:24

I separate into darks and lights and then wash everything at 40. Towels, bedding and clothes all washed together and no-one's ever got ill.

Only time I wash higher is if one of the DC has had a poo explosion or similar! Then those clothes washed separately on a hot wash.

Pastamancer · 18/08/2015 10:27

Split my loads into whites, darks and reds. All washed at 40 with 1 fairy tablet apart from nappies and clothes that have been leaked on which I put on 60 still with 1 tablet. No fabric conditioner for anything, I don't see the point of adding scent to clothes.
