Where do babies come from? Response to 4yoDD

My 4yo DD just asked me where babies come from Shock. Crikey, I wasn't expecting to have to deal with that question for a good few years. I was completely taken by surprise and might have muttered something about 'coming from Mummys' tummies' and then swiftly changed the subject.
I always read on here about how you should always give honest, age appropriate responses to these type of questions. So WIBU to respond as I did? If so, how should I have responded? She's 4 FFS!

Thanks everyone for your top tips. I will look into the books too. I had IVF for all my kids, so it's good to have some ideas about how to approach this when the next question arises!

Be prepared for it being on a busy bus or in a supermarket queue just as the noise suddenly died down and your little cherub asks in a clear piercing voice "where do babies come out" and everyone turns to look at you. Time stops. Cashiers stop scanning, conversations end, people stop packing, you could hear a pin drop for the ten million years before you mutter something about your privates - red faced and praying that the floor would just swallow you up. I kid you not. And then the dear child says "ok" and "can I have a cake?" Confused

That is blatantly going to happen to me now Schwarz Grin Should have taken the opportunity to answer the question when I was asked in private!

Don't, for Christ's sake, panic and do what my mum did and tell your DC that babies come from Argos. I assumed that they were all kept out the back with the other stuff and used to come out on conveyor belts. The places still make me uncomfortable to this day. Confused

Argos GrinGrin
My Mum told me that you pray to God and he decides if you have a baby or not Hmm Think I prefer the Argos idea Grin
