not to go to A&E with head injury - 6yo

6yo DS hit his head this lunchtime - fell off a bench in the kitchen (from a sitting position) on to his head on a hard slate floor. I wasn't with him at the time so didn't see what happened, but it sounds like he was just sitting right on the edge of the bench, reading, and slid off the end - not sure how he managed to land head first.

Anyway, at intervals through the afternoon, he's said his head is hurting, although otherwise seems completely normal - playing, running around, went swimming etc. etc.

Just a bit worried that it's still hurting now at bedtime. It's not the scalp, I've felt all over that and there's no tender bits, and no injury that you can see/feel. DS was particularly tired at teatime too, though that's not unusual for him esp. when he's been swimming.

Part of me wants to take him to A&E just to be sure, but DH thinks that's an over-reaction, and looking online, I think he's right.

All the websites say to check on them in the night - but check for what? What can you tell when they're asleep?

Psuedo - what utter bollocks and way to try and frighten someone weaker. My children have had several trips to A&E and if it was about anything worrying they would be calling me. Bog off with your rubbish.

No visits. No calls. No point to you.

Headache still not gone so I rang 111 who said to come to A&E so we are there now . Very busy. Seen triage nurse and all her checks fine. WAiting for doctor now.

Hope he is ok, OP

Thanks Cooger - yes, he is fine.

Doctor at hospital was lovely, said he understood why I was worried and knew that I was thinking about brain compression/internal bleeding etc.

He said that he wasn't worried at all about that - a child like DS who was clearly well in himself, active, happy, chatting etc. wasn't at risk. He said a child with potential brain injury would have more symptoms than just a headache, and the symptoms would be getting steadily worse.

Very reassuring, and though I was obviously wasting his time by being there, he was very nice and didn't suggest that at all.

Glad he is fine and you have put your mind at rest.
