HE should have reversed?

Hi all, go easy on me as I am a new driver!

This morning as I was driving to work I was driving through narrow country lanes. Over the hedge I could see a car would be approaching shortly so I slowed down, hey presto the guy in oncoming car zooms round corner and stops. The road is only wide enough for one vehicle at a time and I was coming down a winding hill. There was a passing place about 10 feet behind him where he could have reversed to. He made several hand gestures at me to hurry up. Nervous and flustered I put my car into reverse and ended up in a hedge just to the left rear end of my car. Unfortunately there was a wall in the hedge and my bumper came off :(

Guy in car then angrily reversed to the passing place and let me drive through.

Was he being unreasonable? I thought the rule of thumb was to give way to drivers coming down a hill as opposed to coming up one?

Unfortunately when it comes to passing places, and old fashioned 'rules' not really applying anymore due to enhancements in motors - I would say it's about common sense when you meet other cars.

If he passed a passing place, when he had visablity of you then he should have reversed. However, that's not normally the case as he probably chose not to use the passing place to budge you to move. It was an arsehole move on his part, and one that you get on country lanes with passing places unfortunately.

Worst comes to worst, if you are not confident to reverse simply sit idle until the other car moves. I have done this before, and even made a show of getting my book out. Young girl in the other car (a mini driver, which made me chuckle) roared at me, shouting, hand gestures. At the end of the day, their behaviour says everything about them and nothing about you. I was NOT going to reverse around a blind bend on a country lane when she only had to reverse 5ft to get into a passing place.

I am sorry this happened to you (lost bumper) as a new driver it must have been scary. You will meet so many arses on the road, many times its because they feel protected by the steel of their car but the second you get them out of the car they run with their tail between their legs.

I used to reverse for people when it would be easier for them to - now I stand my ground. happy to reverse if the passing place is nearer me.

don't get too stressed and fester over it Grin

I use to be like you as a new driver and I did also damage my car because of a bullying idiot putting me under pressure.
You need to not let these people tell you what to do as long as you follow the rules of the road you're fine.
uphill has to give way to down hill btw.

One thing I hate with a passion is flashers. If you flash me when I'm going the speed limit I will purposely slow down. Tailgating I do the same.
I don't know why certain idiots think they can tell others what to do.
So many bullys on the roads.

We met someone like that on the way to our camping holiday.
He'd just passed a good passing place but was flapping at us go reverse.
Did we?
No!
We were towing and another car had turned up behind. My dh just sat behind the wheel slowly shaking his head until the angry man in the other car gave in.
My dh isn't usually one for being rude but when he saw just how close the passing place was he did 'gesticulate' as he likes to call it.
I'd say common sense should have applied in your case and the other driver should have reversed.

It's hard but you just have to sit it out. I've never given up when I have had right of way and been called a few names for it Grin. It's such an uncomfortable though.
