I don't know if I am being really unreasonable but I normally spend hours cooking for my family (mainly to hid loads of vegetables). I couldn't be bothered today so bought a jar of Lloyd grossman sauce to make slag bol and all three loved it and have just scoffed it whereas the one I normally make with grated carrots, peppers, courgette, onions, tomatoes and fresh herbs often goes untouched ? Just feel like why do I bother ?

I would stop hiding veg too. How about kale baked in oil with a little salt. Like healthy crisps. Or when we eat broccoli I say they are trees in summer and they have to turn them into winter trees by eating the 'leaves' off. Maybe they enjoy raw carrot instead of cooked? Give up on the hidden veg.

Kewcumber · 12/08/2015 18:12

simmer it down for ages to concentrate the flavours yeah thats what I said... you have to cook the shit out of it so the veg disappears

Kewcumber · 12/08/2015 18:13

but hidden veg in bolognese makes the sauce taste much better

stillstandingatthebusstop · 12/08/2015 18:14

I was just about to go and cook spag bol . . . but I'm definitely cooking slag bol now. Excellent .

That's cheered me up (sadly) Grin

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 12/08/2015 18:15

I love spaghetti bolognese but I would never put grated carrot in it. Or pepper as DH hates it.

Katie2001 · 12/08/2015 18:16

Ditto, love the idea of slag bol. Do you eat it lying down? Or when Eastenders is on?

Hellionandfriends · 12/08/2015 18:16

I'm of ilk of cooking only one home made meal and not hiding veg. They may or may not find it tasty but it's tough

What they likely about the Lloyd jar was all the salt and sugar. It's like any convenience food, made to draw you in

DoreenLethal · 12/08/2015 18:17

I'm veggie so all my slag bols get loads of veg in them...those Lloyd Grossman sauces are so utterly oily and sugary. Yuk.

LaLyra · 12/08/2015 18:27

Do they eat your other food? Perhaps it's just the combination of those things. I hate courgette in pasta sauce, don't know what it is, I just don't like it. Surely better to make a different one with slightly less hidden veg that they eat than one packed with veg that they don't?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/08/2015 18:29

Eugh. I wouldn't eat it either. Spag bol should not contain grated vegetables

LokiBear · 12/08/2015 18:30

Ditch the hidden veggies. They need to learn to enjoy the taste of veg in its own right otherwise they are less likely to eat veg as they get older. I tend to use chopped onion, garlic, tomato puree, teadpoon of sugar, a tin of tomato, dried herbs and salt and pepper and water in my spag box sauce. Simmer to reduce then blitz with a hand blender. Easy, tasty and cheap.

l12ngo · 12/08/2015 19:06

Surprised at the hate for carrots. Carrot and celery are pretty standard in tomato based sauces.

Theycallmemellowjello · 12/08/2015 19:17

I have to say that all those vegetables in the sauce would not appeal to me flavourwise. Why not try them on a traditional spag bol (to me this is onion, garlic, carrot, tomato, meat, red wine and a bay leaf cooked slowly) and have steamed/grilled veg on the side? You can also sneak a teaspoon of sugar into a tomato sauce to make it more delicious if you're a terrible person like me.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/08/2015 19:22

I could tell the difference too and I wouldn't be keen on either, I really don't like peppers or celery, and I find jarred sauces overly sweet and all have a weird taste.
That said, they shouldn't be rude if you are cooking for them, but you are wasting your time if you know they won't want to eat it.

Mrsjayy · 12/08/2015 19:55

Our shop had an offer on LG sauce i got 1 to try it had a weird metalic taste

noeffingidea · 12/08/2015 20:37

I used to use jars for spaghetti bolognaise, then I stopped. It took them a few goes to get used to it but now they like it.
I just use onions, garlic, passata, tomato puree, a bay leaf dried mixed herbs and a teaspoon of sugar (and mince of course). My eldest liked mushrooms in his as well, but he's left home now.

WantToGetLost · 12/08/2015 20:41

Lloyd gross man sauces made me like pasta and sauce before I use to hate it. Something about those sauces are just nice

Siennasun · 12/08/2015 20:42

How old are your DC? Let them get their own dinner for a couple of weeks and they might appreciate your cooking a bit more?

Mrsjayy · 12/08/2015 20:43

I stopped using jars years ago i get them now and again

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 12/08/2015 20:47

Grated veg in a pasta sauce gives it a rank texture. Fine for toddlers but not adults. No wonder Lloyd grossmen went down so well!

MrsKoala · 12/08/2015 20:48

Not sure why everyone is slating the carrot - is it because it's grated? or because it's present? If it's the mere presence then you don't know your spag bol from your slag bol - a soffritto is the base of most italian sauces and it's finely chopped onion, celery, carrot, garlic and herbs. So carrot is fine here. Peppers tho, bleurch. sorry.

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 12/08/2015 20:54

For me it's because it's grated.

trollkonor · 12/08/2015 21:11

It's the grated aspect, to me all grated veg in a sauce seems like an odd mushy texture.

I like a chunky base, or a finely chopped base or blitzed smooth (then some veg added in).

Also the courgette with carrot. Courgettes with peppers and aubergines is yum, just not carrot.

Sorry OP :) I've had many cooking disasters in my life and coked many meals that my kids have refused to eat.

Penfold007 · 12/08/2015 21:43

I planned to make Spag Bol tomorrow but the Penfolds are now having bottle sauce Slag Bol. Thank you Flowers

misscarlar · 12/08/2015 22:27

Yabu for putting peppers in spaghetti bolognese. I add one courgette grated and a small carrots when using 500g of mince
