to refuse to present boarding pass at airport shops

I had always assumed that as passengers we were legally obliged to hand over our boarding passes when shopping in UK airports.

However we're not and the stores are using it as a way of claiming VAT back from HMCR without passing those savings on to consumers.

Don't know why I'm shocked but I am

No, it is to do with WHERE the item will be used.

TalkinPeace · 11/08/2015 18:25

FWIW
there is also the fact that the Airports just LOVE the liquids ban as it means that gone are the days when you could buy your booze allowance at the local shop and take that with you rather than having to put up with the over priced narrow range that the cartel of duty free shops choose to offer

limitedperiod, love your librarian.

Can see how it works in your DH's shop, but of course he's upfront about it, though annoying to be an unpaid collector of tax, as you say.

ForalltheSaints · 11/08/2015 20:10

Another reason not to fly and to use Eurostar or ferries wherever practical.

TalkinPeace · 11/08/2015 20:34

forall
not many ferries or trains to the USA that I know of

I don't particularly mind showing my boarding pass. I have it with me and I'm probably not going to be militant at the checkout, but I'd prefer it if airport shops passed on extra savings to me rather than pocketing it.

I won't buy anything other than water and a newspaper - which often comes free with the water - in WHSmiths.

I hate WHSmiths with a vengeance, but it does seem like cutting off your nose to spite your face to get to your destination and have to rush out to a supermarket to buy water because you hate WHSmiths.

The only other thing I routinely buy is make up, but I know what I want and know the prices and will only buy things that have savings. MAC eyeshadows and lip glosses mostly, they're good and I'm sure there are other brands.

I'm a bit of a sucker for the summer versions of scent too that you always get at airports. My niece bought me a lighter version of Calvin Klein's Eternity that was lovely.

Talkin, you can still pack it in your case, can't you? I'm off on hols soon and intend to take a couple of bottles in my case.

limitedperiodonly · 12/08/2015 15:54

I think you can pack it in your case mineofuselessinformation but don't want to cope with the consequences of a smashed bottle over my clothes.

Shame, because we do a trip to Bologna every January and a friend always gives us red wine, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and won't take no for an answer.

This stuff is really lovely but can you imagine what damage it could do if it smashed in your case?

I always left it in the hotel room for the maids but there was a thread on here a while ago about someone being sacked for 'stealing' stuff which had clearly been left behind.

So now I leave signed notes to the maids authorising them to take itemised stuff left in the room and duplicates at reception addressed to the manager saying the things are presents.

They probably think I'm bonkers.

mineofuselessinformation · 12/08/2015 17:33

It will go in the very centre of the case, wrapped up in clothes or a towel, and will be non-staining, just in case!

limitedperiodonly · 12/08/2015 18:28

I don't doubt it mine but I've always been too scared to do it. I mourn the stuff we've left behind.

TalkinPeace · 12/08/2015 20:46

I regularly pack glass jars into my case .... pre kids it used to be Rum from the state liquor stores in New Hampshire
more recently its jars of honey from all over the place
never had a breakage yet

RedDaisyRed · 13/08/2015 08:58

About 30 years ago when Spain had much much cheaper wine than the UK and most people in the Uk could not afford wine (now it's cheaper than water!!) we packed about 10 bottles in one case and 10 in the other wrapped in towels etc. When we got home there were about 3 of them smashed and of course red wine on clothes etc so I would not now pack bottles in cases. I took a glass bottle of olive oil though all the way to Barbados this summer. Within 2 hours of arrival I knocked it off the kitchen edge into hundreds of pieces. Glass bottles and I do not mix on holidays I have decided.

sandycove · 13/08/2015 09:02

take an empty water bottle through security, fill at a tap afterwards.
What a good idea, never thought of that. Smile

TalkinPeace · 13/08/2015 09:28

we always take our bottles with us.
drink up before security
fill up as soon as you get through

Dowser · 13/08/2015 09:40

We use those stainless steel bottles. Like from one greenbottle. They are very durable. Oh ran mine over with his car and said I think it's had it now but oh no, it lived to tell the tale. Both of themare battle scarred. I'm so clumsy!

So we take them with us and just fill up on the other side.

Dowser · 13/08/2015 09:48

I could never understand toblerone being sold in duty fre shops at extortionate prices when it's as cheap as chips in supermarkets and other outlets.

What a con.

So is airport food. As I'm gluten free we make a lovely 3 egg frittata and bung it with lots of goodies, ham, mushrooms, cheese, onions etc. keep in fridge overnight and eat it cold at the airport or on the plane.

Why pay whatever it is ...£7 for a breakfast.

limitedperiodonly · 13/08/2015 17:05

Each to their own. Holidays for me start at the airport. As soon as I've got my shoes back on I'm off to the Caviar House for a shrimp cocktail and a glass of white wine. DH likes the Balik salmon.

Szeli · 13/08/2015 23:12

I don't ever recall having to do this although before last summer I hadnt flown since 2008, every year before that tho and don't recall this at all Confused
