To think that you don't really need to use bleach for everything all the time?

I keep seeing people commenting on how often they use bleach in their cleaning routine and I'm really surprised by how much it seems to be used.

I never use bleach unless someone is ill and usually not even then - just a disinfectant spray.

My kitchen and bathroom are lovely and clean. I usually just use a damp sponge or cloth with a bit of washing up liquid or whatever.

I don't get why people think bleach is necessary - and it is so poisonous, not just to us but to fish and so on. It makes me really Sad to think there's so much of it being washed down the plug hole.

AIBU to think it doesn't really make things any cleaner than just soapy water or maybe another less harsh chemical for really tough stuff?

I promise I'm not an eco warrior or hippy. It just never really occurred to me to use the stuff except when we had a superbug and then it was necessary for a few months. Nasty stuff!

she helps to swap more chemical products to those without or less

What are these chemical free products? Air - made of chemicals. Lemon juice - made of chemicals. Water - made of chemicals. Bicarb - made of chemicals...............

Artandco · 09/08/2015 22:18

Regina - well yes, but I'm assuming most people realise the difference between water chemicals and bleach chemicals. You wouldn't t drink bleach would you

VulcanWoman · 09/08/2015 22:19

Baby, your friends with the crusty brown toilets, they might be unaware dare I say it, toilet brushes are available to buy in the shops, have you noticed whether or not they have one beside their toilet.

VulcanWoman · 09/08/2015 22:22

Oh Regina, stop being pedantic, you know very well we're talking about harmful chemicals.

SurlyCue · 09/08/2015 22:23

Ok im posting here because there are people here right now.

DS has had vomiting since 11pm last night and has kept nothing down, not even water. He was complaining of sore head at 9pm and i gave him children's nurofen but he brought it back up within half an hour. He is now sleeping, i have no thermometer but he feels hot to me. Should i wake him and try more nurofen or leave him?

I am 47 and i dont use it at all. Tea stains, just rub some salt around the bottom of your mug. I use natural products for cleaning and have done for years. Hate the smell, makes me gag.

Sgtmajormummy · 09/08/2015 22:34

Surly I'd leave him to rest. Try giving him flat Fanta if you've got it, or just sugar and water to rehydrate him if he wakes up thirsty.

Superexcited · 09/08/2015 22:35

I use bleach in the loo and I also use it to clean the grout and sealant in the shower cubicle. My mum has all kinds of cleaning products for her shower cubicle, including mould and mildew removers, but her grout is never sparkly white. A big of dilute bleach brushed into the grout sync left for half an hour and the shower cubicle is gleaming.
I use a disinfectant spray or sugar soap for most other cleaning jobs.

Sgtmajormummy · 09/08/2015 22:36

Tiny sips, obviously, not great gulps. About an egg-cup full every 15 mins.

SurlyCue · 09/08/2015 22:37

Thanks sgt i have no fizzy drinks at all. I'll try the sugar in water if he wakes.

SurlyCue · 09/08/2015 22:39

How much sugar in say an egg cup amount of water?

Minicaters · 09/08/2015 22:41

Surly I would leave him to sleep.

When he wakes, try liquid again. Personally I'd try paracetamol as the next med because it is meant to be better at reducing fever than ibuprofen, and it would avoid any risk of overdose. But if he's still not keeping anything down just stick with squash or something. Hope he feels better soon.

SurlyCue · 09/08/2015 22:46

Thanks. I have calpol too so will try it if he wakes.

Sorry everyone will stop hogging the thread now. Back to bleach. Or not Grin

Sgtmajormummy · 09/08/2015 22:52

Just a tiny pinch of sugar.

knittingbat · 09/08/2015 23:32

But I thought we had all decided that we liked bacteria now? Because of stuff like this?

m.huffpost.com/us/entry/1594430

It's about the human microbiome btw.

I am a clean freak as is my mother and I had no idea people used so much! The smell makes me want to vom plus surely it is fairly lethal stuff? I do def use it occasionally but thought everyone else was the same. Bottle lasts ages.

RJnomore · 09/08/2015 23:33

I don't have bleach in the house. Awful stuff.

AdoraBell · 09/08/2015 23:37

When I was much younger and living freely alone after getting rid of an abusive BF I was using 3 bottles of bleach every week. I now think it was a headology thing because I was still in the "home" we shared. Once I got over that I stopped using bleach and now rarely buy the horrid stuff.

ManicPixieDream · 09/08/2015 23:57

I bleach my chopping boards and cloths after washing up. I take it that's not a great idea?

I'll stop but what should I do instead? I hate the thought of a non bleached dish cloth.

coconutpie · 10/08/2015 01:13

The only thing I use bleach for is to squirt it around the toilet bowl, leave to sit for a while and then flush it away. Hate the stuff but it gets the bowls white.

For those that use lemon juice etc - do you use that in the toilet bowl? Recipe please!! I would love to have a natural alternative than that horrid bleach stuff.

WaggleBee · 10/08/2015 01:45

I hate the smell of bleach. It makes me nauseous.

I know someone who bleaches everything and after being in their house my clothes and even my hair smells of bleach.

WaggleBee · 10/08/2015 01:47

Although I'm not surprised some love the smell after seeing so many posts about loving Zoflora. Envy

SirPercyPilkington · 10/08/2015 02:02

Manic I have the same question - if I want to soak my cloths in something that will clean it/stop germs from multiplying, what shall I use instead of bleach?

I only use it down the loo once a week and soaking grotty cloths.

BertieBotts · 10/08/2015 02:23

I hate the smell of bleach too and it makes me feel sick.

DH loves it and bought some rubbish Cillit Bang with bleach. Then he uses it everywhere. Has ruined countless clothes. I have banned him from buying another! He doesn't believe that you can clean just as well with other cleaning solutions. I mean, to be fair, it did bring up the grotty 20 year old fridge lovely, and it's useful in the shower when I haven't cleaned it for months but it's just overkill to use it on the counters and other everyday kinds of cleaning.

I wash cloths in the machine at 60 or higher, that sanitizes/kills germs. You can also microwave them if they don't contain metal.

mollie123 · 10/08/2015 06:51

haven't read the full thread but I use cleaning products very sparingly and always wash at 30 degrees
toilet cleaner is used once in a blue moon -
BUT I have a septic tank that hates anything not biodegradeable so that is partly my excuse. Smile
