To hate "baby on board" signs?

Before I start, please no one try and spread bollocks about the energy services. Here's why:

  1. So I don't have a sign, you're still not going to look for my child, even though I have car seat there?
  1. Yes people say they're suppose to be removed when a child isn't present, however,
99% of people leave them on so that already raises a red flag.

To me, they just translate to "pretentious twat on board".
Don't even get me started on "princess on board". If I had a anger issues, I'd personally ram into the back of that car.

What's your take?

Skeppers · 09/08/2015 13:22

I don't see the issue? As other posters have said, maybe it's to alert other drivers that you may be tired/have slightly slower reaction times, so not to tailgate (like many arseholes do) and you may be driving more 'carefully', ie. pulling away slowly from lights/junctions, so said arseholes (as mentioned above) won't sit up your backside and honk at you for not jumping off the lights in a microsecond. Drivers around here are notably wanksome, it has to be said.

I've had both things happen to me and, as a result, I bought a sign. But no, not a twee one! They are twattish.

I can't say I've ever really judged anyone who has a 'baby on board' sign on their car; they're the same as 'P' plates in my estimation- just a polite indication to other drivers. I really don't understand why people get so irate about them!?

'Powered by fairydust' and 'My other car is a broom' and passive aggressive signs about tailgating however...yuk. There's a car in our street at the moment which has a sign reading "My brakes work fine, how's your insurance?" on the rear windscreen. Hmm

MokunMokun · 09/08/2015 13:24

How about the dog ones? Do they bother you too? Dachshund on board, that sort of thing.

I'm indifferent to the signs. I think people see them as a bit of fun and nothing else. Don't see the point in getting worked up over them.

And no I don't have one.

Bakeoffcake · 09/08/2015 13:27

I've never had one but I really don't see why you're quite so upset by them.

You should try calming down a bit when you're driving!

MummaV · 09/08/2015 13:28

If I had a car I wouldn't have one. However my DM, who has my DD in her car once a week max has one.

I am pretty ambivalent about it and if it keeps her happy so be it. But I wouldn't one adorning the back window of my hypothetical car.

caravanista13 · 09/08/2015 13:31

Why on earth do you care?!

PiperChapstick · 09/08/2015 13:31

YANBU. Drivers who are tosserish enough to tailgate won't give two hoots that someone else's child is in the car.

And I loathe custom made ones "Harry on board" etc - surely that's a tad dangerous and is the same reasons as to why it's not advised that people buy kids football shorts with their first names on?

BeautifulBatman · 09/08/2015 13:32

Yanbu OP. Yanbu.

Bleakhouse1879 · 09/08/2015 13:35

LovesYoungDream: Is no-one allowed to post on this site without having to search the entire site beforehand? I suppose in RL you have never talked about the same subject twice, have you?

Mehitabel6 · 09/08/2015 13:42

It seems pointless - as if I would think 'great I can crash into the back of them' if they didn't have one!

If they do have one it should be taken out when the baby is not in board.

They are not as bad as the cringeworthy 'little princess on board' etc.

Laindon · 09/08/2015 13:43

Thank you BleakHouse, didn't even cross my mind to search if it had been posted before.

OP posts:
enderwoman · 09/08/2015 13:44

They are extremely twattish.

Are they supposed to make others drive slower? Or give a wide berth if you've parked next to one? Why are child passengers more important than older ones in the back seat? If you can't drive because of your child shouldn't you be in a taxi or public transport for the sake of other drivers and your own health?

Gruntfuttock · 09/08/2015 13:46

"And don't even get me started on the eyelashes!"

I've only see that once and it's so silly that it just makes me smile. Sorry. I suppose I should have been enraged instead.

Mehitabel6 · 09/08/2015 13:47

You ought to know Laindon that on MN you are supposed to keep track of everything that has been posted in the last 2 years! Grin
However had you added to an old thread you would be in trouble and told 'why not start a new one of your own?'

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 09/08/2015 13:48

People shouldn't tailgate ANYONE though whether they have a baby on board or a genuine irish leprechaun. They shouldn't make people 'think' about being cautious or driving sensibly and the types who drive like dicks anyone wont give two hoots if you advertise the fact you are transporting a baby/daschund/mother in law/genuine irish Leprechaun

Mehitabel6 · 09/08/2015 13:51

If people were to never post about subjects that had been discussed before we would be saved from reading about parent and baby parking ever again. Grin

mmollytoots · 09/08/2015 13:59

Baby on board signs are actually nothing to do with what previous posters have said

Baby on board signs are for in the event of a serious accident they are a way of making first responders aware that there may be a baby or child on board who is unable to release their own belt or may need emergency help. Also in the event of (worst case scenario), a child is ejected from the vehicle and adults are unconscious is means ambulance crews can check area.

so yes they should be taken down we child not in car and they are nothing to do with slow driver etc etc Hmm

bettyberry · 09/08/2015 13:59

I hate them. They are just another distraction in the windows. I also think they are incredibly pretentious. Prince/princess on board? oh do fuck off. That also applies to clothes with prince/princess.

I sometimes wonder if those signs are just a way for people to go 'look at me, ain't I clever. I actually had sex once! Whoop!' Grin Wink

Username12345 · 09/08/2015 14:04

You sound like a sad sack.

What other small joys people have in their lives do you hate? Hmm

I wouldn't have them in my car but I don't give a shit what others have on theirs.

Get over yourself.

PiperChapstick · 09/08/2015 14:06

Baby on board signs are for in the event of a serious accident they are a way of making first responders aware that there may be a baby or child on board who is unable to release their own belt or may need emergency help.

This is an urban myth, emergency service workers are highly skilled and don't need a crappy yellow triangle to tell them if a human is in the back of the car.

AngelBlue12 · 09/08/2015 14:07

Emergency crews take NO NOTICE of these signs - it's an urban myth. I know a few paramedics and they say that these signs wind them right up and it doesn't make them look for children.

WickedWax · 09/08/2015 14:09

Ah the laughable myth that emergency responders won't find a car seat or a small child but will find a bit of foam or card that is 10cm x 10cm Grin.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 09/08/2015 14:10

They're ridiculous. YANBU.

ComposHatComesBack · 09/08/2015 14:14

molly the emergency services pay no heed to them. They will search a vehicle in tge same way each time driver, rear seat, front passenger seat regardless of whether you have baby on board, don't blame me I voted monster raving loony party or honk if you bonk plastered all over your rear windows.

SaintEyning · 09/08/2015 14:18

To me it says take extra care as this person is not concentrating as there are screaming children inside.

BlueSuedeStiletto · 09/08/2015 14:18

As an EMT I can promise you that in the event of a serious RTC we search both the vehicles and the scene thoroughly to establish how many patients we have. The general rule is to trust nothing until you've established it for yourself. I probably wouldn't even notice a baby on board sign and I certainly don't need it to do my job properly.
HTH

Ps... In non work life they don't annoy me per se- but I do raise an eyebrow when I see someone with said sign driving like a twunt!
