to think it tedious that vegetarians never reciprocate the favour

Now, I´m not mightily peed off at this, and I really dont want to offend any veg´s here but I have quite a few veg friends and over the years you invite ppl over for meals and in turn get invited etc. I always cater for their vegetarian lifestyle choice (because thats what it is, its not an allergy, thats different), but they never cater for mine. This is just something I´ve been musing about for awhile now, nothing too serious. But I really like my meat and think its unfair that vegetarians expect meat eaters to pander to them but most of them never even dream of doing meat eaters the same favour!

OP posts:

a carnivore is an animal that eats only meat

suzanneyeswecan · 09/08/2015 18:38

if you are human then you are an omnivore

SlagBol · 09/08/2015 18:41

I particularly love stalking and shooting my own meat and then preparing the kill myself before cooking and eating it. I LOVE it!

I'm assuming you mean meat that is free ranging on your farm?

BertrandRussell · 09/08/2015 18:41

Why do people always say "I love/like MY meat"? Very odd.

SlagBol · 09/08/2015 18:42

I just see you are a dairy farmer, ignore me and I apologise.

However, when you say 'like they have the moral high ground', do you think there is is truth in that?

SlagBol · 09/08/2015 18:43

BertrandRussell, freaky, I was just going to post that. I wonder if these people really know where their lovely meat comes from?

BertrandRussell · 09/08/2015 18:44

Visions of stalking and shooting a Hereford. Probably not much of a challenge...

Gabilan · 09/08/2015 19:03

I don't think vegetarians have the moral high ground. The mid-ground possibly, but not the high ground. Apart from anything else, I consume dairy products. You can't have dairy without some form of beef industry - it's not as if all those calves are retired to live in the country. Well, they're not retired for long, anyway.

Vegans have the moral high ground. However, I never really felt I could restrict my diet and lifestyle to the extent that they do. Fair play to anyone who does it, I just don't think I could.

If I did go back to eating meat (other than fish) it would probably be game. I used to work somewhere with a game keeper and he used to give me rabbits and cheap cuts of venison (neck and offal). I didn't feel I could tell him I was veggie so I just gave the meat to my family. I didn't feel bad about it as it had had quite a nice life, and then a quick death.

Reubs15 · 09/08/2015 20:33

If you need to eat meat at every meal I dread to think what your digestive system is like!!!
As you may have guessed YABU!
I'm not veggie but my sister is. I lived with her for 5 months looking after my niece and I didn't eat meat the whole time as I wouldn't have disrespected her by taking it into her house. I didn't miss it. It's not like your friends make you go hungry! They provide you with food so get over it or don't go!

tomatodizzymum · 09/08/2015 20:46

That's messed up Confused

I don't think anyone who eats mass produced food has the moral high ground over anyone else. Being vegan is a first world luxury that mother nature alone could not actually support without the help of mass farmed pulses and beans!

CultureSucksDownWords · 09/08/2015 20:53

I notice it's "stalking and shooting my own meat" rather than "stalking, shooting and killing animals". I find anyone who enjoys killing creatures to be deeply disturbing. I can't fathom how anyone can actually enjoy the deliberate and needless killing of another creature.

Pixa · 09/08/2015 20:57

My DH is a fussy pescetarian but will always cook meat for others; he barbecued for 40 people last summer, however, that's his choice and no-one forced or asked him too - I certainly would never ask him to cook meat!

suzanneyeswecan · 09/08/2015 20:58

I find anyone who enjoys killing creatures to be deeply disturbing

possibly he views the creatures as still walking food rather then living sentient beings?

suzanneyeswecan · 09/08/2015 21:01

Being vegan is a first world luxury that mother nature alone could not actually support without the help of mass farmed pulses and beans!

but 'mother nature alone' resulted in the evolution of the humans with the whole frontal cortex thing which enabled them to invent clever farming methods to vastly increase the carrying capacity of the land

Gabilan · 09/08/2015 21:06

I can't fathom how anyone can actually enjoy the deliberate and needless killing of another creature.

Humans evolved as hunter-gatherers. We're actually very well adapted to hunt. Even before we invented guns we could, with co-operation, bring down large prey.

We can now choose to opt out of parts of this. We can opt out of hunting. We don't have to eat meat. However, I think some of us do retain a hunting instinct. So as much as we don't need to kill animals now, it's an instinctive part of us and I think some people will to a degree get a kind of enjoyment out of it. I'm not saying this is praiseworthy, but I don't think it's exactly blameworthy either. It's a part of some us. What we choose to do about that is another matter.

listsandbudgets · 09/08/2015 21:06

YABU.

My sister is vegetarian. Its not problem to cook her a lovely vegetarian meal and she reciprocates when I go to stay with her with lovely vegetarian meals. Its not a case of pandering to her life style. Its a case of enjoying myself with my friends and family complete with lovely food.

I also cook halal food for my Muslim friends and I certainly don't expect them to provide roast pork when I go to their homes. I have couple of hindu friends and wouldn't dream of expecting roast beef from them either.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 09/08/2015 21:08

Thing is, irrespective of ethics, it's not very nice to cook someone something you know they won't eat. You know your veggie friends wing east meat but they can safely assume you will eat a lovely goats cheese quiche or whatever. So that's fine, isn't it?

Alternatively you could stop inviting vegetarians round for dinner.

It's a shame there has been so much disgust and unpleasant comments about eating dead animals on this thread. It would have been a perfect opportunity to reinforce how we all make different choices and that some of us think it is perfectly fine and natural to eat humanely sourced animal products and some don't and that's all fine.

CultureSucksDownWords · 09/08/2015 21:11

Guy, are you surprised that some vegetarians find the idea of handling, cooking and eating meat to be unpleasant/repulsive? I'm not, and I don't think it's wrong for people who feel that way to say so.

tomatodizzymum · 09/08/2015 21:14

All animals have frontal lobes in the cortex Wink We have exceptional abilities true, but our brains are actually anatomically pretty standard.

clever farming methods to vastly increase the carrying capacity of the land...and screw mother nature. So hunter gatherer's actually have the moral high ground.

paddymcgintysmum · 09/08/2015 21:17

A horrible thing about cooking meat is the smell left on my clothes and hair afterwards.

Bleugh, shudder and shower.

suzanneyeswecan · 09/08/2015 21:18

Guy many vegetarians are utterly repulsed at the idea of eating meat and in light of that I think this thread has been pretty restrained!

especially when those who do eat meat are wont to post things like
I LOVE MY MEAT, I LOVE KILLING ANIMALS
Hmm

your post gives me the impression of a finger wagging 'Pollyanna' Hmm

DrElizabethPlimpton · 09/08/2015 21:18

You really are a delight OP.

I'm vegan btw and cook meat most days for DH and DS.

suzanneyeswecan · 09/08/2015 21:20

Speak for yourself Tomato mine is way superior compared to other species!

tomatodizzymum · 09/08/2015 21:22

Actually I think people enjoy hunting if they plan to display their kill. I don't know a single farmer who enjoys killing, I know a lot that respect and care for animals. Killing is the unpleasant part of the process. I think those that enjoy killing animals are actually more removed from nature rather than actually closer to it. I think hunter gatherer communities were/are mostly scavangers. Humans are actually lousy hunters and many hunter gatherer societies worship animals.
