To think Kenneth Branagh is a bit of a twerp?

I know he's a Sir but I can't bring myself to put that in the title as 1) the honours system is a load of old hooey and 2) you just know that he refers to himself Sir Kenneth Branagh when ordering a taxi or booking a table in a restaurant. Twerp.

Also his acting is so self conscious, it's very 'look at me, someone once said in 1992 that I was the successor to Olivier's crown. I'm a Very Serious Actor don't you know'. Twerp.

And I've never enjoyed one of his films! Emma Thompson must pat herself on the back every night when she looks across the bed and sees Greg Wise lying there.

Celibacy oh how I agree. Fecking reasonableness. I don't get why Bruce bloody good game good game give us a twirl hair piece golf Forsyth hasn't gone away now he's got a bloody knighthood. Or in fact why he wasn't buried in the necropolis of the 1970s.

shizzlesandglitz · 08/08/2015 01:18

but.............it seems this is going to be one of those tiresome situations where I'll have to admit that IABU.

Aw, aces - one of those rare thread when a poster posts, reads, absorbs subsequent replies, and comes back all reasonable.
Not like those infuriating " AIBU?"! majority - "yes, you are. Get a big grip."
OP. "La, la , la, I'm not listening as you're all loons and I'm not...."
Smile

HeyDuggee · 08/08/2015 01:27

I'm with you OP. Was flicking through channels and had to turn off the Frankenstein movie, thinking what. A. Twat.

I half expected him to stop (after dramatically swooshing his silk robes on the coarse floorboards as he dashed about with exaggerated fury not seen since The Breakfast Club chase scene)... Shout "Acting. Thank you" a la Master Thespian parody from Saturday Night Live

Kampeki · 08/08/2015 01:33

I have met him twice, years ago. He was charming and did not come across as arrogant at all. He was very nice and normal tbh.

EvilRingahBitch · 08/08/2015 01:41

He seems lovely but given his tragic lip deficiency he was miscast as Gilderoy Lockhart, notorious for his charming smile.

Cinderella was very good.

Don't get me started on Sir Bruce.,

CrystalMcPistol · 08/08/2015 01:45

I think it's a universally accepted truth that sir Bruce is a twit and a twerp. I'm not changing my mind on that for anyone!

I'm with you, OP. Can't stand his acting.

Once got into a massive fight with a friend, we were sitting opposite sides of a table and ending up standing up, leaning across the table until we were nose to nose, with her pro and me anti Branagh. We both found it hilarious, but our husbands are both the kind who prefer to avoid all conflict.

Now, if we disagree with something the other one says, we just say "Branagh".

Tryingtokeepalidonit · 08/08/2015 05:52

In Frankenstein he was playing a twat so maybe that was just acting? I am already looking forward to his directing of Derek Jacobi in R and J next summer.

Plus I have actually met Emma Thompson and I think it is KB who deserves congratulations.

ThePaperBagPrincess · 08/08/2015 05:57

He's been my favourite portrayal of Iago from Othello - no-one else has come close!

Guitargirl · 08/08/2015 06:20

I was never a fan of KB until I saw him play Heydrich in Conspiracy. I watched that totally spell-bound - mainly because of his frighteningly cold portrayal which has stayed with me for years.

HagOtheNorth · 08/08/2015 06:39

I've seen a lot of Shakespeare plays over the years, live and on film.
His was the first Hamlet that made sense to me.
I find Darling Sir Larry overrated as an actor IMO but Branagh is superb at live Shakespeare.

mummytime · 08/08/2015 07:25

In defence of ET. I first saw her in Tuti Fruiti and thought she was great, and that was a very different part than the ones she gets now.
Although she isn't as amazing as HBC is.

londonrach · 08/08/2015 07:26

Peters friends, much a do about nothing...sorry but i love his acting. Peters friends is a particular favourite. For a short time he was in a group with emma thompson etc and he was good. However since he did the dirty on emma and she got greg (swoon) i havent seen him. Take it he doing real acting.

DustBunnyFarmer · 08/08/2015 07:58

Until Lockhart started seeing Bellatrix on the side

Can someone translate the Harry Potter references please? I'm not fluent and IMDB isn't helping on this occasion. TIA.

londonrach · 08/08/2015 08:03

Dust...bra is rummoured to have had an affair with helen whilst married to emma. In harry potter bra character (lock) plays opposite helens character (bell).

Vatersay · 08/08/2015 08:05

Yay Crystal! Converted to Kenneth by Mumsnet! Grin

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 08/08/2015 08:05

Stop right there!

Ken is a brilliant actor and he is gorgeous.

I'm hoping Wallander comes back soon, love him as a tortured Swedish detective!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 08/08/2015 08:07

I'm glad you've seen the light and recognise our Ken for the superstar that he is Wink.

londonrach · 08/08/2015 08:09

Dont understand sir bruce either. Seems to be everywhere at one point. Less so now so maybe enjoying his retirement. Thought it was a money saving exercise to use the same person for multiple programmes.

Idontseeanydragons · 08/08/2015 08:13

I know someone who has worked with him and he is apparently definitely not a 'call me Sir' type Grin
Much Ado About Nothing is one of my favourite films but Henry V has been slightly edged out by the Hollow Crown version with the delectable Tom Hiddleston...

DustBunnyFarmer · 08/08/2015 08:13

Thanks Londonrach, but still stuck on the Helen. Mirren?

londonrach · 08/08/2015 08:16

Helen bonham dust..Grin

DustBunnyFarmer · 08/08/2015 08:18

Ah, thanks. I couldn't find a Bellatrix on IMDB. That makes sense - RP/luvvie sensibilities more aligned than the other Helen I suggested.

londonrach · 08/08/2015 08:19

Just realised emma was in harry potter too. For dust...www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/10442260/Emma-Thompson-I-have-made-my-peace-over-Kenneth-Branaghs-affair.html
