Is this rude? Lady at a store refused to serve me until I got off the phone
I was only buying slippers
I wasn't talking loud or even talking at the counter and my phone rang whilst I was in line
Was I rude? Is this rude?

So what if the person on the till was on the phone when you got to the till and put through your transaction while dealing with the customer on the phone?

cosmicglittergirl · 06/08/2015 23:27

^^ certainly whilst serving I'm not impressed.

Pipbin · 06/08/2015 23:28

What would Katie Hopkins think?
She so full of her own self importance that she probably talks on the phone while having her smear.

DisgustingNamechange · 06/08/2015 23:28

Pipbin, last time I checked I wasn't getting paid to buy my shopping. Not the same thing is it.

It's our store policy to not answer any phones whilst serving at checkouts. ( personal phones not allowed on the shop floor) think it's the same for most large retailers

Pipbin · 06/08/2015 23:30

No, Disgusting it is called respect. Just because someone is being paid to be there it doesn't mean you get to treat them like dirt.

DisgustingNamechange · 06/08/2015 23:30

Customers are PAYING. Staff are BEING PAID. Therein lies the difference. Stop comparing the incomparable.

GarminGirl · 06/08/2015 23:30

I think katie Hopkins is rude, but not that rude.

Bloody rude. I get many important calls from work in a day but manage not to take them at the checkout.

GarminGirl · 06/08/2015 23:31

Is that what we teach our kids now? It's ok to be rude if you are paying....

DisgustingNamechange · 06/08/2015 23:31

I don't treat anyone like dirt, thank you. I always have a smile and a thank you for checkout operators, whether I'm on the phone or not.

Technically it is rude. I've been on the phone when couriers come to my door, and mouthed "sorry!" at them as I sign the thingy.

In a shop its more rude. I'd be reluctant to carry on a call.

That said, being dictated to would irritate me, even though its never happened and unlikely to happen. The rebel in me would make them wait, I guess? Wink

maggieryan · 06/08/2015 23:33

Disgusting name change I agree

DisgustingNamechange · 06/08/2015 23:33

Oh and I also anticipate their questions, state whether I have bags without being prompted, have cash/card out and ready and maintain eye contact with them; ALL WHILST BEING ON THE PHONE.

DivaDroid · 06/08/2015 23:34

I work in a large national supermarket. I will offer to wait until the customer has finished their call. It's rude to interrupt a phone call.
It is, however, rude, condescending & dismissive to answer or be on your phone while someone is trying to serve you.
Don't complain about crappy service if you can't leave your phone for 2 minutes.
It really pisses me off - am I (or any of my colleagues) not worth 2 minutes of your time?Angry

Pipbin · 06/08/2015 23:34

If you acknowledge them, answer their questions and put your card in, is that treating them like dirt?
I don't think so. In an ideal world put the phone down, but I think acknowledgement of the member of staff is ok.

Even if you are being polite to staff Disgusting your attitude is 'I'm paying your wages, therefore I'm better than you.'

DisgustingNamechange · 06/08/2015 23:35

When have I stated I was better than anyone pipbin? My posts are all here in black and white. Please find the one you're referring to. Otherwise please stop putting words in my mouth.

CheshireChat · 06/08/2015 23:36

It's rude to keep talking whilst someone is serving you, just ask them to hold for a bit or just let the person behind you to get served first. Though somebody did refuse to serve my partner even though he'd stopped talking to me and taken he's hands free off.
