Started a job in june that i love but very target driven. Its very strick with targets and is at a claims managment company for ppi. Just been offered a civil servant position to start the end of September. Im thinking of jumping over for job security and it is more money (just)and slightly better hours for me (no more 8pm finishes i have a 3 year old dd) what would you do and aibu to be considering this jump.

Short term the money might be better, but as others have said the opportunity to increase your salary is very hard in the current climate. Like FFFF says it can take an age to increase it with the current 1% increases. On the plus side, it is very family friendly though we do flexi hours so I can come in late (nursery drop off) and stay late to make up my hours, but then my partner works in private sector and gets flexitime so it's not exclusive to govt / civil service. Another factor to consider; I guess PPI could finally see it's day (when the compensation from banks runs out) and create future job security risks, but there will always be a need for universal credit!

Be careful the Comprehensive Spending Review of 2010 cut the public sector to the bone. The 2015 CSR will be looking for additional cuts 25-40%.

Firstly, why do you think you'll be out the door on time as a CS? It's not 1989. It's 2015 and due to a lot of cuts there are fuck all staff in Whitehall. Secondly, more money? Weigh up long term the pay rises (lack of) and the 1% pay cap. Thirdly, there maybe no targets but there are objectives and in some departments they are the same thing. It's more pressurised that you might think- it's not an easy ride. Oh and cuts are coming so job security doesn't exist.

Plus the Tories are not that easy to please.....

I escaped in 2011 (voluntary redundancy) after 15 years in the CS. Wild horses wouldn't drag me back to that hell.

When you work in the CS you can be forced to make decisions that you are not comfortable with. You can be surrounded by people who are essentially brainwashed into thinking a certain way and convincing themselves the decisions they make are decent ones. I think the Universal Credit dept will be soul destroying to say the least IMHO.

Just seen its UC. Sorry no. I wouldn't unless you just see it as short term.
Staff morale at a low
Pension no longer as generous for new starter.

I'm going back to CS after a break. For now it fits with our family and the alternative career whilst more money will not have me home much. It's a different place now to the one I left. I hope my soul isn't destroyed within a week but I also no longer care. Life exists outside
