Had a nice day on the beach with dd and ds today.
Dd is 2. She was in a wetsuit for warmth and an un-padded real nappy, acting as a swim nappy.
She is fairly regular at filling her nappy first thing in the morning. Then usually not again until the next morning, so we don't always go around checking for poop...
Today though, she had the worlds biggest poop mid afternoon. She didn't mention it. (Mostly, she tells me)
She was splashing at the edge of the sea with ds. Nappy got wet as well as very full.
Nice 15 minute (toddler paced) walk back to the car. Stripped her down to clean and dress before driving home.
She has the most awful sore bottom.
She rarely complains about pain (grazed knees, banged head etc, all pass with a rub or a kiss. Maybe a plaster if there is blood. )
But this is so sore, she was screaming as I rinsed her in morrisons sink.
Obviously, I did what I could with wipes. But it was much gentler to wash the sand off with water.
So, what is the best thing for a sore little bottom? First time she has suffered from it.
We got some johnsons nappy cream in the shop.

Yes it will but it will be a barrier between the sand and the skin and the rub of the wet suit. I find the seams of these wets suits very rough against the skin so even without the sand they can make the skin sore.

Ok. We will be avoiding the beach for a few days until she recovers (sorry, ds).
If it is still cold enough for wetsuits, I will try Vaseline.

another one who thinks metanium is great. also maybe wipe her bottom with warm water and cotton wool instead of wipes. I know its a faff but it won't be as painful.

Egg white worked wonders on my 3 when they had any issues, it was MIL who suggested it and I had said to my DM about it thinking she was a bit potty and she agreed with her. Just lightly whisk it up, spread on the sore area, let it dry a bit (if possible) then put nappy on.

Seriously if it resulted from a one off missed poo and you've cleaned it you will probably find she's absolutely fine after a good night's sleep. That's been my experience anyway...!

Another vote for Metanium here, but get the yellow one as it doesn't sound like the normal one will be strong enough.

Hi OP, I'm a nurse. Just want to add that all the barrier creams mentioned here are good. We used the 'yellow' metanium, for extreme adult nappy rash.
The secret is how you use it. Clean dry bum, slather on the cream of choice, put on nappy, and leave it on until she has done a poo or is very sandy. This is important. If you keep removing the cream unnecessarily it takes longer to heal.
Do not remove cream with water or wipes! It drags off the skin. You must always use baby oil and something like cotton wool. Then it glides off. Most of these creams are designed to resist water that is the whole point, please don't use water or wipes. Use the oil. Pat dry,add more cream. She'll be grand in no time.

Hi all.
Thanks for your advice.
She slept ok, in the johnsons cream.
The red burn-looking patches have calmed down now.
She has a few patches that were worse, they are still a bit sore and raw. But she is improving. And managing to walk a bit more normally...
