To think the internet causes mass stupidity?

If something is said on the internet it suddenly becomes fact and silly thing go viral. Why? How on earth did this happen?

Latest, totally daft mind you, is a young woman who apparently 'discovered' after 19 years, that you are meant to take the plastic bit of earring safety backs. It's all over the web, totally viral and has now been in many articles and varying other forms of media. Everyone is now astonished at this revelation and realising they've 'been doing it wrong for years' and will now 'do it right'.

BUT, you aren't meant to remove it, it's a safety/comfort back for a reason. It's is there for safety, security and comfort for heavier fronts or widened ear holes. But nope, someone on twitter said so and therefore it's fact. It's like the hair grip all over again!

Anyone else find it totally crazy that one persons comment can be taken so far and taken as fact? What other ones have you seen?

No, it doesn't cause stupidity. The stupid are already stupid. It just makes them louder and makes them famous, and unfortunately more visible to the rest of us.

But hair grips upside down and sprayed with hairspray before putting it just stay put better. Shock Forgot the sodding hairspray this morning and had to bloody repin the hair. right royal pita :(

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 01:04

Also pretty hair grips = decoration, plain = holds it in place.

tvlover1234 · 06/08/2015 07:06

No idea! Probably as they're for decoration and not so much for pinning. Hair grips aren't technically supposed to be shown in the hairdressing world. We get point deducted for anything showing! Also cross pinning works a treat.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 06/08/2015 08:45

They aren't just for decoration though. I think it's a case of people have found grips are 'double sided' rather than having a specific side for use. The only people to know are the designers and makers I guess.

Ps, wavey side down looks ridiculous on my hair

Non decorative grips are not meant to be seen. I don't think you're getting my point. Lmao..

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 06/08/2015 10:36

Ah,but there are at times. Loads of women have always used them to scrape hair back at the sides etc where they are still visible, I think that's probably where the whole thing came about? They're often used to just slide one side back etc not always used in an updo. Maybe that's it and why they're often worn with the wavy side up?

*they

Bizarre stuff! However, I still go with the fact that if they are always meant to be wavy side down because it grips better then the decorative ones should have the decorative bit on the flat side :p

Right, I think that's enough on hair grips, don't want it doing round two all over the web Grin

Pretty much Trip trap the decorative side is on the wrong side, but matter less as they are decorative and not meant for holding up. And we are talking the bobby pin hair grips not the clip (open to bend and close) ones.

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 11:05

Omg, cross pinning is the way forwards. Thanks tvlover!

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/08/2015 11:10

I have an irrational loathing of the word bobby-pin.

Goshthatsspicy · 06/08/2015 11:14

I keep the little plastic tubes on dangling earrings. I use them. They are perfect for making sure they don't get lost/keep secure.

DJThreeDog · 06/08/2015 11:20

YANBU.

My husband is the worst. He's shares any old shit on FB. I have liked Snopes on his FB for him as I was getting annoyed having to point out if it sounds like a load of shit, it probably is a load of shit!

MaxPepsi · 06/08/2015 11:36

I keep the plastic tube things too - so I don't lose my ear rings.

I use hair grips upside down, to keep my hair in place then cover with a decorative one if I'm going out.

I don't take the plastic off the 'butterflies' mainly because I remember a girl at school 'losing' one of hers in the back of her ear and she needed to go to the hospital to have it removed.
