following on from a few threads about healthy diets etc.

Interested to see what people eat and if they think their diet is 'healthy' I'm not hugely health conscious (i run a minimum of 30 miles a week up to 60 sometimes so I like to think that makes up for it somehow!) but i did make a concerted effort to cut fizzy drinks (cola etc) out as that's rubbish and if i wanted something fizzy and sweet a bit of elderflower cordial and sparkling water tends to do the trick!
I'm also a vegetarian

Breakfast - rarely have unless we have bagels in, in which case i'll have one with butter and marmite. Probably once a week? Once/twice a month i'll have crepe style pancakes with syrup.

Lunch - Either jacket potato with beans and cheese or left overs from the night before.

Dinners - i love cooking! currys are my favourite, either chickpea or paneer, w rice. Qesedillas with refried beans, cheese an courgettes another fixture, various gnocchi dishes, pasta and pesto, falafel i make a lot, home made bean burgers and wedges, not averse to the odd pizza, fajitas/enchiladas with veggies and beans, veggie chillies/paella/risotto/stirfrys with noodles etc etc.
I try to avoid too many quorn/cauldron/other meat replacement stuff as as much as i like it, it definitely has made me feel a bit sickly before.

snacks - if I'm running more than 10 miles in one day i will occasionally (always) fall foul to wanting a sugary pick me up - usually a galaxy bar! Sometimes a slice of bread and butter or ryvita cracker and marmite if dinner is taking a while to cook.

drink - litres of water and sugar free orange squash - no coffee/tea (dont like hot drinks). Lucozade sport before a long run or race, alcohol once a week maybe? sometimes more sometimes less with average out at that. occasional sparkling elderflower/cloudy lemonade.

Probably go to for a meal once a week, sometimes i'll have a salad or a soup, sometimes a whole cheese and tomato pizza with sides and alcohol!

Most of my food is carb-heavy (but i do run a lot!) but nearly all scratch made, plenty of variety, don't shy away from carbs/sugar/fat etc. I'm a healthy weight if not a bit above 'racing weight' at the moment, and i think it's all fairly healthy.

Interested to see what others eat and think?

Thanks for the ham gratin receipe Bathsheba. I will definitely make that for the children one weekend when the weather is colder. I like the sound of the green beans too.

Janeymoo50 · 03/08/2015 17:24

Blimey, mine is going to sound really unhealthy.

Breakfast - none (just a mug of tea, with sugar as leave house at 06.30 and cannot face food

2 hour commute - marmite sandwich

At work - 9am, tea and toast

Possibly a cake or something mid morning

Lunch, sandwich (ham, or chicken plus salad) - that's all, no crisps except on a Friday.

Probably 2/3 large mugs of tea during day with sugar and even another sweet treat!

On train home, something chocolatey (as am starving hungry by 7pm)

Dinner, about 8.30pm - can be anything ranging from curry and rice to fish pie but tonight is sausages, salad and new potatoes.

I've just realised writing this why I am 2 stone overweight, need to cut the sugar and sweet snacks and replace with fruit, yoghurt and less sugared tea!!!

greenandgold · 03/08/2015 17:41

That is a lot of food ...

Kikimoon · 03/08/2015 17:57

One-egg cheese omelette, tomato, Ryvitas, latte

Chocolate bar - occasionally fruit if I make myself

Cheese and salad wrap with another latte

Dinner - tofu stir fry and rice, spag Bol, pork chop and fried potatoes, pasta meatballs and tom sauce. Also with salad and green veg. Usually wine or beer.

Ryvitas with marmite

Drink lots of green tea and water, and oatcakes through the day

Hygellig · 03/08/2015 18:00

Today I've had:

Breakfast - cup of tea and bowl of cereal (muesli and grape nuts).

Lunch - leftover homemade vegetable pizza, coleslaw, salad, French bread crust as DS only eats the middle. Slice of cake and square of chocolate.

Dinner - homemade chips, two fried eggs, peas, yoghurt.

Other dinners tend to be curries, stir fries, ratatouille, risotto with probably too much reliance on jarred sauces.

I may have some fruit before bed. I am quite prone to snacking on biscuits mid morning. On the days when I eat with DH around 8pm I am terrible for snacking when the kids have their dinner or finishing their leftovers.

I'm 155cm and about 53kg. The lowest I was was 49kg when breastfeeding and my heaviest was 60kg when I ate too many crisps.

marialuisa · 03/08/2015 18:07

BMI of 18.8.

my diet is dreadful and I would undoubtedly count as a fussy eater by MN standards. I attribute this to years of being forced to eat food I didn't like at boarding school.

Today I had: small slice of white toast with butter and strawberry jam. 2 mugs of tea with skimmed milk

Through the morning, 2 mugs of tea with skimmed milk, 5 chocolate hobnobs

lunch: enormous mug of tea from Starbucks, toasted cheese and mushroom croissant

Mid afternoon: glass of full sugar, high juice orange squash, mug of tea, 3 handfuls of salty popcorn

Supper: chicken breast in CaJun spices, mixed green salad, small portion of white rice, handful of grapes. Mug of tea.

Suspect I will have at least 3 more mugs of tea before bed. Have had a slight hangover so probably not helped on the healthy eating front.

confusedandemployed · 03/08/2015 18:40

Doing 5:2 currently, need to lose at least another stone.
I rarely eat breakfast. I find it just wakes my appetite and I eat more throughout the day if I have breakfast.
Gallons of instant coffee with sweetener and rationed s-s milk.
Lunch: salad and chicken or prawns. Soup if at home.
Dinner: usually home made. Curry, tagine, dhal and chapatis, fajitas, chilli con carne...as long as it has chillis we'll eat it.
Snacks: 5:2 has cured me of snacking through the day. Evenings: I'll have lentil chips and sometimes a small choc bar (Aldi fake Penguin or Milky Way).
Alcohol: I drink twice a week, usually too much of it. I don't care.
Soft drinks: gallons of zero cal pop. Again, I don't care.
I exercise 4-6 times a week. I am 5'2", 11 stone and very muscular.

StaceyAndTracey · 03/08/2015 21:51

I am shocked by how little some of you eat . I have no idea how you can het through the day on toast / sandwiches and tea / coffee and biscuits . Aren't you STARVING all the time ????

I eat LOADS more than many of you

Breakfast - eggs and vegetables , usually a veg omelette or
Low sugar cereal and lots of fruit

Lunch and dinner - pretty similar , protein and lots of veg or fruit

Eg Stir fry , salad, roast veg with grilled chicken , fish, pork
Casseroles and home made soup in the winter

If I'm hungry I'll add a baked potatoe , rice or quinoa . Occasionally gluten free pasta

I only drink herbal tea or water . My treats are red wine and chocolate ice cream . Or just chocolate .

I'm careful about the quality of what I eat because I have an under active thyroid and I'm peri menopausal < double whammy > so I put on weight easily

Anilec · 04/08/2015 00:13

I have utterly and completely lost my sweet tooth. That probably sounds great, except that I will binge eat crisps instead.
Breakfast: always toast (normally white), butter, marmite, sliced tomatoes on top. Two cups of coffee with semi-skimmed milk.
Try not to have snacks, but if I do, it'll be crisps.
Lunch: big portion of salad, dressing and some protein - healthy-wise, it'll be smoked salmon, unhealthy-wise, it'll be saucisson. Possibly some crisps to.
Dinner: could be anything. Spag bol, stir-fry, etc.
That actually sounds really quite healthy and I am a normal BMI but definitely could do with getting rid of the muffin top. I'm greedy though, and I drink a shit load of wine.

drinkscabinet · 04/08/2015 00:38

If it wasn't for my cake addiction I'd be incredibly healthy.

A normal week day would be

Breakfast: Weetabix and dried fruit, a glass of milk to drink, a banana and a full fat yoghurt

Midmorning snack: handful of nuts or an apple and small lump of cheese. or hummus and sticks of veg.

Lunch: Leftovers so a casserole or a pasta dish or curry (all homemade). I am for it to contain 2 servings of veg. Fresh fruit for pudding and then some dried mango for a 'treat'

Afternoon snack: As for morning snack

Tea: As for lunch. Probably a square or two of chocolate and dates for pudding rather than the fresh fruit).

Water to drink all day except that milk at breakfast.

Weekends there's a glass of wine with tea and I'm less organised about snacks. We have a big breakfast with savoury components (cooked breakfast or bagel with smoked salmon or eggy bread) and something like pain au chocolat on Saturday because we go out swimming over lunchtime and then have an afternoon savoury snack.

So that all sounds lovely until you realise I work with a bunch of incredible bakers who regularly take cakes or biscuits into work. So today was as above except for the two (small) brownies. Yum.

toffeeboffin · 04/08/2015 02:32

I have two cups of coffee with milk, an English muffin with peanut butter or porridge for breakfast. Another large coffee en route to work.

Mid morning snack of a boiled egg, almonds or fruit.

Lunch will be a massive salad with chick peas, feta, chicken, veg etc. Yog for pudding, or fruit. Snack on cheese, fruit, nuts. Loads of water during the day, maybe a can of diet Pepsi.

Dinner is usually steak/chicken/pork chop with massive salad. Odd glass of wine during the week. Sometimes an ice cream or some cake if made at weekend.

Just started a job that includes lunch so might have to readjust dinner times.

In winter we have soups/stews/casseroles for dinner ( live abroad, mega hot summers and freezing winters).

Pumpkinette · 04/08/2015 04:03

Breakfast - skip this most mornings. Maybe 1 or 2 days out of 7 days I will have something like boiled eggs mashed in a cup with a slice of toast and real butter or some porridge. I never do breakfast cereals because I find it's too much milk. Occasionally I will have a roll and bacon or sausage - once every two months or so.

Lunch - again frequently skip this along with breakfast. Odd occasions I do eat it's something like toast with a slice of Edam cheese or some noodles.

If I have skipped breakfast and lunch I feel puckish around 3 so have some snacks. Greek yoghurt, a couple of biscuits, a sandwich etc. It just depends what I can grab quickly. If I've had either breakfast or lunch that day I don't snack.

Dinner: bit of a mix really. I like to cook so do homemade meals like spag Bol, pies, roast dinners, chilli, chicken breasts with veg or rice etc. but sometimes rely on frozen things when I CBA cooking properly and I would say we have a takeaway once a month, sometimes less.

I rarely snack at night. I just have coffee or green tea.

I drink about 6 cups of coffee a day which I think helps to suppress my appetite. I do try to drink water but i rarely meet my 2 litre a day target and can go days without actually drinking any water at all - not good I know.

I am currently about 1 stone overweight. I was previously 2 stone over and ate the same amount of food but I used to use things that were low fat and artificial sweeteners. I have now switched back to full fat versions of things (milk, butter, yoghurt a etc) and I use real sugar and cut out everything with sweeteners (they are in loads and loads of foods). I feel so much better for it and losing 1 stone since January by doing nothing else has been great.

Today (or yesterday as now after midnight) I have eaten: 2 slices of homemade pizza, 1 slice of toast with butter, 5 cups of coffee and 3 green olives.

Imlookingatboats · 04/08/2015 04:11

Any meal could be anything from nothing, to something most people would consider pretty healthy, to something not healthy.

Most of the time, like 90%, it falls within the healthy category.

I don't count calories and never have and am happy with my body and health.

I have one coffee a day and drink water at all other times. Except when I have a beer or a glass of wine. Not because I'm disciplined, but because when i'm thirsty I drink water.

I don't snack. Not because I have discipline, but because I'm not hungry. I rarely do that sweet snack thing a couple of hours after dinner. But sometimes I do.

goodnessgraciousgouda · 04/08/2015 08:50

I'm pregnant, so eating a bit more than usual at the moment but aren't gaining a huge amount of weight. BMI is currently 20.8 at 18 weeks pregnant.

I don't really pay much attention to what I eat. Some days I eat way less, and some days I eat way more. I do It seems to balance out. I do an hour of sport three times a week.

Yesterday I had:

Breakfast:Small bowl of porridge (made with water and semi skimmed milk) with honey and raisins.

Fuck ton of water all through the day. Constantly thirsty.

Mid morning: Cup of earl grey tea with spoonful of sugar.

lunch wholegrain sandwich with ham, cheddar and mustard. four squares of chocolate (which I felt bad about since I'm meant to cut down on sugar)

snack - second cup of earl grey with slice of cheddar

dinner - two wholemeal wraps with home made filling of kidney beans, red pepper, sweetcorn and onions, with grated cheese and low fat creme fraiche.

That's a pretty big day of eating for me.

Toadinthehole · 04/08/2015 09:11

Typical daily diet for the Toad house:

Porridge for breakfast with brown sugar or honey, and milk. Cup of tea (milk, sugar) sometimes. Kids have milk or water, sometimes tea.

Normally an apple mid-morning.

Peanut butter sandwiches for lunch with a couple of pieces of fruit.

I drink water throughout the day, perhaps a cup of tea at 3 (I used to drink about 4-6 cups a day but I got the shakes).

Kids normally get jam sandwiches, nuts, orange / apple and cut veg for lunch, possibly dried fruit to take to school.

Dinner is normally something batch cooked, typically a red meat casserole with lots of legumes, ie, lamb cooked with tomatoes and haricot beans. Normally with two sorts of veg, and white rice / spuds / white pasta. Fish may be once or twice a week, and something nice at the weekend e.g. roast or steak.

Water normally drunk with meal.

Maybe a nip of whisky in the evening if I have an open bottle, sometimes some wine at the weekend. Sometimes a bit of chocolate.

Sometimes a sweet dessert at the weekend, e.g. bakewell tart if I'm feeling up to making it.

Apart from 1 bar of chocolate for the week, and some sweets as rewards for the kids, we don't keep any junk food in the house.

I figure that as long as a) everything is cooked from scratch and b) everyone's eating plenty of fruit, veg and meat/fish everything else will look after itself & there's no reason to worry about putting a second sugar in your tea or using lard in pastry.

We are all slim. Haven't had toothache for 20 years, although the kids' milk teeth haven't been perfect.

Doctor today said our diet was excellent.
