To have thought my dcs diet was ok until I joined mumsnet?

I have always thought my dc ate ok, but since joining mumsnet and reading lots of posts I am worried that I do not feed my dc a healthy diet! Typical day consists of:
Breakfast: bagel and orange juice
Snack: grapes
Lunch: cheese sandwich, mini cheddars, raisons
Snack: 2 chocolate digestives
Dinner: home made spag Bol, strawberries

Does this sound ok? I am worried the daily mini cheddars and digestives are too much after reading what other children eat :(

Agree, Morloth.

DisappointedOne · 31/07/2015 21:55

I've never understood the point of hidden veg.....

Passmethecrisps · 31/07/2015 21:55

ego I suspect we were all baby led weaned frankly!

Baby wants it, baby eats it. Baby doesn't want it, baby throws it on the floor.

Baby led weaning

msgrinch · 31/07/2015 21:55

It gets veg in go kids who refuse to eat veg. Hmm

UrethraFranklin1 · 31/07/2015 21:56

No need to eat between meals at all really

No actual need to do the vast majority of the things most people do. But we do like doing them, and that is a good enough reason itself.

cogitosum · 31/07/2015 21:56

We had family round earlier this week and all the children got happy meals so Ive got hundreds of the bloody things littering my house!

starlight2007 · 31/07/2015 21:56

I would like to add many people can sounds more virtuous than they are.. I could tell you we had homemade bannana bread today, however I could also say.. I made banana bread because the big bag of bananas I bought hadn't been eaten...

We have also had KFC this holidays.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 31/07/2015 21:56

I'd vary the fruit snack with other fruit, and I'd sneak some extra veg into the spag Bol like finely chopped courgettes of mushrooms etc

This always makes me giggle. How does anybody know if the op hasn't already snuck in as much veg as is humanly possible to sneak in, for all we know it could be very yucky and be 90% Kale.

Extra fucking veg by serving the entire thing on a bed of creamed spinach

I am with you on that disappointed.

I will squish lots of veg into a sauce as it tastes good but it is not long term solution.

However, if you have kids who simply will not eat veg it works.

The problem is that we are told all kids don't like veg so some won't wven try or perhaps not persevere.

'Hidden' veg does serve some purpose in that scenario but I would rather not have to if I could avoid it

Passmethecrisps · 31/07/2015 21:58

Well, you know what to do with them cogitosum! Get them stashed on the shoe rack

NeedsAsockamnesty · 31/07/2015 21:59

Oh and one of my kids spent the day mostly attempting to lick shoes and decorating her hair with hummus then throwing soft cod roes at her brother

SaltyGoodness · 31/07/2015 21:59

I am loving this thread.

But don't get me started on mother's of 1 year olds asking if they can put them on skim milk or do they have to stick with semi-skimmed still?

Low-fat anything is bollocks.

TheReason · 31/07/2015 22:00

Some people are too saintly about what their children eat

But some people seem to take pride in being the opposite and happily listing of what junk their children ate

I saw a notice today in the health centre about childhood obesity and it was saying something like 'say no to having crisps and biscuits everyday'

I think because there is so much junk food about nowadays our idea of what's a reasonable amount of it to eat has become skewed. Obviously we all enjoy some junk food - but it's probably best to try to avoid it being a regular part of a child's diet

msgrinch · 31/07/2015 22:01

needs she sounds incredible, nothing better than lobbing a cod roe at your brother.

trashcanjunkie · 31/07/2015 22:01

Mine go through periods of being fed utter crap, and then we'll reign it in and do healthy for a while.

They're at their dads this week so will have had weetos for breakfast, sarnies and fruit for lunch, and some kind of proper dinner involving meat, tatties and veg. If they visit his mothers they will devour cakes, crisps and sweeties.

At my house they have porridge for breakfast in the week. Added to that will be strawberries, raspberries and chopped apple. On a Saturday they have croissants and jam.

For lunches in term time it's a peanut butter sandwich, yoghurt, fruit and something gross like a barny bear. In the holidays I will do either pasta/pesto or cheese with crackers and chopped carrot/cucumber or beans on toast or cheese on toast. On a Saturday we usually have a full English for lunch.

And dinner is normally meat or fish with salad or stir fried veggies, or a curry or stew or casserole.

I think your menu sounds good enough op, we all do our best.

ReluctantCamper · 31/07/2015 22:03

Putting veg and/or lentils in spag Bol makes the mince go further and reduces the saturated fat content. If I didn't do it, we would struggle to get 5 a day. Why is it not a long term solution?

DisappointedOne · 31/07/2015 22:04

Dunno whether it's because I'm veggie myself, and it's all DD (4) got during gestation but she LOVES veg. Especially brocolli and cabbage. Weirdly, she also adores fruit, which i don't generally eat. She's always preferred food off our plates, not highly processed. She wants packed lunches at school next year because "chicken nuggets are yucky".

DisappointedOne · 31/07/2015 22:05

Because at some point they need to know that they do actually like it to stand a chance of continuing to eat it once they make their own meals!

SaltyGoodness · 31/07/2015 22:05

Silly question, but how do you put lentils in spag bol - is it just a handful of red lentils? What stage do you throw them in? They're the only ones that break up completely, aren't they... Or do you put brown lentils in (which I would quite like but sounds dangerous and revolutionary)

WoodliceCollection · 31/07/2015 22:05

Don't believe anyone on here about wheat or 'carbs'. In fact, don't believe anyone about either of those until they've shown you their medical degree and extensive list of peer reviewed publications (does not include facebook posts 'liked' by mad hippy cronies). Looks fine to me, and assuming your spag sauce has veg, it's got 5 fruit/veg, which is more than most of the UK manages (including my youngest some days).
