To ask how much your water bills are?

Sorry to be nosy, but we have recently had our water meter 'upgraded' to a smart version, which means, apparently, that the water company can drive past the house, point a device and read our meter without coming in to the house.

But our water bill has shot up.

I am of the opinion that our old meter was not working properly and that we have been undercharged for years.

DH thinks DD has started having too many baths.

£35a month, no meter.

Marylou, get yourself over to MSE and save some money. There's a section in the money makeover about direct debits.

Op, do you have to be on a meter? It's not always cheaper.

KrevlornswathoftheDeathwokClan · 31/07/2015 16:44

Between £30 and £60 a quarter. This is for two adults. On a meter for Yorkshire water.

RabbitSaysWoof · 31/07/2015 16:45

That does especially with a dishwasher.

acquiescence · 31/07/2015 17:01

Ours is £70 a month, not metered, for a 3 bed terrace. I asked for it to be reviewed as it seems extortionate but apparently the prices are set. I think it depends on your water supplier. We are in a cheap area (Yorkshire) but for some reason with very expensive water!

WhetherOrNot · 31/07/2015 17:02

£20 a month on meter - 2 and a half adults.

PersonalClown · 31/07/2015 17:06

£18 a month metered.
2 adult, 1 teenager, 2 dogs and 2 fishtanks.

Varies between £18 a month and £20 depend on whether a slight credit/debit has built up. Why they can't put it a £19 as that seems to be my ideal amount?!

Superexcited · 31/07/2015 17:06

I live in wales and because I'm claiming child benefit for 3 or more children my water rates are capped at this rate. I don't think everyone knows about this. It's called 'welsh water assist'. I wonder if there is an equivalent in England?

Yes there is a similar scheme in England - it's called water sure in my region. The capped rate is based on the average household bill for your water supplier and I think it is £440 a year for my water supplier.
To be eligible you be to meet one of the following criteria:
Have 3 or more children and be on a low income
Be on a low income and have a medical condition which requires additional use of water (eczema or incontinence for example due to the additional washing required).

whois · 31/07/2015 17:08

£28 a month.

Two adults but DH spends FOREVER in the shower. Like, at least 25 mins.

MissingDietCoke · 31/07/2015 17:09

£38 a month for us. 2 adults, toddler and baby. 2 showers and a bath every day, washer and dishwasher every day or other day. On a meter, in Yorkshire, by direct debit. Far cheaper than gas and electric. And yes I knew it off hand, I keep a tight eye on all bills (mat leave!)

fourtothedozen · 31/07/2015 17:10

No idea. Water is charged within our council tax in Scotland. We can use as much as we like for no extra charge.

south west waterSad

metered me and dd £50 a month.

Plomino · 31/07/2015 17:20

Anglian water here - £100 a month , for 5 adults , and 2 under 10 . Our actual usage is about 85 , but are paying off arrears from when mains drainage came into the village and the direct debit didn't alter , so we are actually paying for two years sewage rates instead of just the one. And we have horses as well , so all their water usage plus the field water is included.

witch000 · 31/07/2015 17:24

We have just moved. Now we don't have a meter it's £74 a month ,when we were on a meter it was £35.

RaaRaaTheLion · 31/07/2015 17:25

£90 for 6 months for us!

Oldraver · 31/07/2015 17:27

Just had ours this morning and we are on a meter but not a smart one. We pay £41 and are slightly in credit.

I have noticed with ours there is now 'Fixed Charge' which I havn't noticed before, which is for the cost of.... 'billing, enquiries and metering. The charge for surface water and highway drainage is included in the wastewater fixed charge'

Then a note if surface water doesn't drain into the seweres we could have a rebate

I was straight on the phone Grin

jellybeans · 31/07/2015 17:31

41 a month. 7 of us. Smallish terrace.

Oldraver · 31/07/2015 17:33

Sorry should of said....the actual bill was £196.04 (with possible £12 ish off).. for a 4 bed 3bathroom lots of showers, watering garden washer/diswasher on.

The last time I paid under the old rate system was 1996 and was £260 a year for a 3 bed...so think we're doing well

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/07/2015 17:36

About 30 ish a month, 2 adults and a teen. Looooooooong showers, always got the washing machine going, big garden that needs watering. On a water meter.

TheUnwillingNarcheska · 31/07/2015 17:41

Water meter, Yorkshire water £30 a month

2 adults, 2 children, 2 showers a day minimum (Dh showers at gym)

dishwasher
washing machine on twice a day
We drink water with evening meal every day

RolyPolierThanThou · 31/07/2015 17:45

With southern water. 2 adults plus 2 toddlers who have a shallow bath every night.

Was 26 a month until yesterday, now 36 a month. We use an average of 260l per day according to my bill.

What type of shower do you have and do you have the pressure up high. Adjusting the water pressure can make a massive difference in how much water a 5 minute shower uses.

MsRinky · 31/07/2015 18:06

Anglian Water, 2 adults, on a meter. £17 a month.

Metalguru · 31/07/2015 19:10

South west water, £85 a month, on a meter but apparently we use less than the average family of five

EmeraldKitten · 31/07/2015 19:13

Dwr Cymru, £43 a month with no meter

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/07/2015 19:17

£193pa/water
£224.19 pa/sewerage

Scotland, paid monthly with council tax.
