To wish salespeople wouldn't follow me round the shop?

I've just been sofa shopping with DH. In one of the shops it was like we were being stalked. I get that it is the saleman's job to be helpful and answer questions but this guy was extreme. Every time DH and I spoke he would jump in, it got to the point where I didn't feel as though I had room to think.

At one point we went to the bit upstairs, had a look at something - and there he was! im sure IABU, the man has to do a job but my goodness it was intrusive.

I often have to bite my tongue when clothes shopping and get asked 'can I help?' whilst looking at some t-shirts or similar. In my head what I really want to say is 'yes, because although I've done an undergraduate and postgraduate degree, done some challenging jobs, got married and had a baby; choosing which t-shirt to buy is where it's likely to get really tricky for me, so thanks'. Except I don't have the nerve so just mumble that I'm just browsing thanks and avoid future eye contact. Grin

Yanbu. However when I worked in retail, my manager was constantly on my back to approach every customer several times and also to try and link sell as much as I could when they were actually paying. I struggled with this so much as when im a customer I hate being constantly badgered by annoying sales people.

DadfromUncle · 31/07/2015 19:32

pparently the till wouldn't process the sale if you don't give your name and address

This irritates me no end. Can someone in retail explain what this is all about?

Could be a lot of things - if it's TV related it's to pass on the TVL so they can check you have a licence.

If it's a refund, they tend to demand it so they can track people who seem to do it a lot.

Sometimes it's to get you on the offers mailing list.

Quite often they ask me for a postcode for marketing (to check the "reach") - I always give the postcode of an office block next to Reading Railway station (I live in rural Leics) that must muck up the marketing data a bit - hopefully.

I am the same in clothes shops, if i am followed i leave and make it very clear i am leaving and will not spend with the company if i am made to feel uncomfortable.

i hate carpet shopping i tell them the size of my room they try and steer me towards carpet they want me to buy ask me if im sure my room is that size i need to add on a bit extra for the fitting etc so i tell them the exact size of the room and point out i already added on a bit extra then if i finally get around to being able to buy the carpet and arrange for delivery they try and get me to buy into their carpet fitting service i tell them there is no need why do you know someone cheaper? yes me i fit carpet myself (clang! jaws drop all over the shop!) the last time i carpet shopped they argued with me that i couldn't possibly fit my own carpet not being sexist love but you're not that big how can you possibly fit carpet.......i walked out the shop

i hate shopping for carpets

I invent an address, an email, too, if they want it. A name, too.

pigsDOfly · 31/07/2015 19:47

I was asked to write my email address on a piece of paper the other day by someone in Argos so they 'could email a receipt'.

I'm not giving you my email address, just give me my receipt from the till. Ridiculous.

GraysAnalogy · 31/07/2015 19:48

Thankyou vulcan and dad

Doobigetta · 31/07/2015 20:40

They ask for your name and address when giving refunds to try and prevent employee theft. A common trick is (or used to be) to collect receipts customers left behind, process refunds for the items, and keep the "refunded" cash- that way the till still balanced at the end of the day. Taking customer details and making another member of staff countersign prevents that.

VulcanWoman · 31/07/2015 21:02

I can understand giving address for that reason but not for purchasing something, next time I'm refusing to give it, end of.
