Is £10 each too much for a two hour toddler group?

I think this is seriously expensive - it was a free flow art and crafts session (extra £2 for face painting). Granted they need to buy materials but it was in a park and there must've been about 35 kids. Strangely if it had been £6 for an hour I wouldn't have minded as much. I asked other mums if they thought it was poor value for money but they said no they didn't mind because they didn't have to clean up - Confused

BTW we are in London but it was in zone 3 so not central.

It is very extortionate, but op mentioned London so I woukdent be surprised.

ButtonMoon88 · 30/07/2015 23:11

I'm in zone three in NLondon, where was this? That's plain ridiculous, I've known music groups charge silly amounts of money per term and I have never understood why there were so busy, I am clearly in the wrong business!!

Marcipex · 30/07/2015 23:13

Ours is £2 for 2 1/2 hours, with collage, painting, ride ons, sand or playdough, singing time, free play and snack.
Second child 50p.
Rural here though.

isittheholidaysyet · 30/07/2015 23:32

Sounds like a silly amount of money to me.

We charge £2 per family for 2 hours and provide lots of toys (which we often buy new rather than donations), snack and drink (as much tea and coffee as adults want) a crafty activity, and usually a drawing (pens/chalk/crayons) activity each week. Another group locally charges £2.50 per family and has better craft than us. We are in The North though.

I could see something with a lot of craft may cost more, but we meet in a hall, presumablt they are not paying for use of the park?

JazzAnnNonMouse · 31/07/2015 00:08

Bloody hell!!
My kids would be bored if we lived in London we'd never go anywhere at those prices

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 31/07/2015 00:11

Was it drop and run or did you have to stay? If the former, not bad, but expensive for you to be there too, even for London

Artandco · 31/07/2015 07:16

Music group in in zone 1, London. About 20 children per session

Artandco · 31/07/2015 07:17

You have to stay , children are 0-3 years in class so can hardly leave them

Binkybix · 31/07/2015 07:22

I live just outside of zone 1 and I find that expensive. Mine don't get any fancy classes though and looking at some kids classes brochures I've picked up I can well believe artandco's prices!

TiggerLillies · 31/07/2015 07:26

If a council class, tis extortionate
If it is a private class in London I'd say it's to be expected, after all the person needs to turn a profit to make it worth running, they aren't charities. Most classes around here are £7 an hour.

That said I don't have a budget to pay that so probably wouldn't go but have plenty of friends who would..

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 31/07/2015 07:31

Massive rip off
I'm in London - more central than OP, and I pay £2-£3 for a 2 hr playgroup inc snack

MisterPip · 31/07/2015 07:54

I'm zone 4 London, children's centre groups are free, toddler church hall groups at £1-2 with a bit of basic craft, art cafe £5 with private swimming and sport around £5 too.
£10 I think would be over the price for an older child doing ballet at a very good local place! It's mad IMO wen the capital is full of free museums and other fun.

WanderingTrolley1 · 31/07/2015 08:03

Seems a tad expensive.

MrsMarigold · 31/07/2015 10:32

Thanks glad most of you agree - sometimes I think I'm as tight as a gnat's arse because I've had so much exposure to my DH!

Somehow £7 an hour isn't bad, also how many DC do you know who can concentrate for two hours one variations of one activity.

I am in London

NO WAY would I pay that . Different, as somebody said, if they make something really good to bring home. Cannot compare to my experience as youngest is now 12 so that kind of thing was long time ago now.

Tinandgonic · 31/07/2015 12:00

I paid £1 for an hour under 6 months and £2 when over 6 months

swimmerforlife · 31/07/2015 12:12

Hell yes! It's £2.50 here in SE London.

musicinspring1 · 31/07/2015 12:26

I'm zone 4 South of the river. Toddler groups in church halls are generally £2/3 per session of 2 hours. Branded groups such as gym/football etc tend to be £5/6 for 45 mins/an hour. I'd think your group was expensive too!

catyloopylou · 31/07/2015 19:57

I know the group the OP mentioned. Yes, expensive but less so than many of the privately run music and dance classes in the area which are in the region of £8 or £9 per 35 or 45 minute class.

The messy craft play does have use of an indoor space if the weather is poor so presumably has to cover that cost, plus materials. My DC have finished the session with 5 paintings, 3 glittery pictures and little bits and bobs they have made before now. I reckon they used up a good few £££ of materials. And it saves me having to spend an hour setting up and clearing away mess at home.

If you think it's expensive then don't go again. There are plenty of cheaper or free things to do in London which my dc enjoy equally, but some variety is nice.

Alanna1 · 31/07/2015 20:19

I dont think £5ph is expensive. 35 kids is £350. They had to buy materials for that and make a decent London wage themselves, when they have to travel between classes etc.
