To ask if you have an OFZR / 'bugout bag'?

As in a 'flee the house in under 2 minutes' bag?

After a random Google search recently I went down the rabbit hole and ended up five sites later at a bonkers American prepper site. I'm now feeling irresponsible for not having a zombie apocalypse bag at the ready.

I'm just not sure what you would put in such a bag. The preppers do seem to be getting ready for Armageddon but tbh they'll run out of baked beans at some point.

The worst we face here is severe weather in the winter so it makes sense to have some extra grub in but do you have a grab and flee bag?

I used to - although it was more an OFPlasticTub. It lived in the garage and could be lifted into my car. But then, like MrsTP we lived in an earthquake zone ("reassuringly" we were told that we were 100m outside the Tsunami evacuation zone). There was a big rucksack beside it in case we needed to leave on foot.

Now that we are out of the Pacific Ring of Fire, we don't have anything. It makes me a bit nervous though, so I may put a small one together just because Grin

swisscheesetony · 30/07/2015 18:07

Not a prepper as such, although keep a healthy eye out for the non-dead. :) seriously, I live in a place renowned for self-sufficiency and remoteness - those in London with an OFRS would be trying to get here.

We do have a risk of tsunami though although the last one was a few thousand years ago. So zombies more likely.

Spartans · 30/07/2015 18:30

Yep! We did the house instead.

Dh is into prepping so we have a good supply of food, ways to produce electric, grow food, medical supplies etc.

We just started all and built it over the years.

Dh has spent a lot of time looking into it. It's been great, because I have loads of exciting hobbies that he encouraged me to take up. Knife throwing, kick boxing, shooting.

It's all bit 'meh' to me, but I enjoy the hobbies that he thinks will be useful so happy to go along with it Grin

MrsJorahMormont · 30/07/2015 19:39

See Spartans I can see how that might happen - you start small and gradually get sucked into the prepper thing. DH gave me the Hmm look when I told him about ideas from the prepper site.

wets self

This is what we need to protect ourselves from people.

packs seriously cool vest & combats outfit, fancy sword and somewhat regrets telling DC1 to "look at the flowers" earlier

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/07/2015 19:43

We have a plan for where to meet in a localized situation, and I am part way to a bob.
I have enough torches to equip everyone within a 3 mile radius.
I think,in all seriousness, everyone should give thought to being able to grab what they find important in case of a fire for example.

SideOrderofChips · 30/07/2015 19:48

Im in a uk preppers group just for fun.

I also have a zombie plan. (not serious!)

HippyChickMama · 30/07/2015 19:49

We have a bag of unisex toiletries, new toothbrush etc in case of unexpected hospital admission. We also do a lot of climbing and hiking so we do have a rucksack full of torches, foil blankets etc. In the event of a zombie apocalypse though surely the plan should be head to the pub, have a nice cold pint and wait for it all to blow over?! Wink

I am now concerned I have a defeatist attitude to zombies. I think I need to watch the walking dead and develop a zombie attack plan.

You are in luck !

23rd of August the spin off from The Walking Dead starts, "Fear The Walking Dead"

And it will be fab cos it is set in LA, so very populated area and begins from the very first reports. We'll get to see how the ZA unfolds from the beginning.

And when FTWD finishes it won't be long for the next season of TWD. Yay!

I live in what is basically the Italian version of "The (Magic) Farm That The Zombie Apocalypse Forgot" but with no Zombie attracting cows.

So I will Bug In not Bug Out.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/07/2015 20:10

Atomik what channel?

I'm so hoping it'll go on Now tv.When's the new season due too?

Atomik · 30/07/2015 20:18

ThatBloodyWoman

Over here it was supposed to be on a The Horror Channel on Sky Italia, but they've dropped THC so the buzz on the net is it will be on Sky Atlantic.

Although TWD is on the Fox channel so I'd immagine that's a contender too.

Launch date is the 23rd August and it seems we'll be getting it the same day.

I am so excitied ! The trailer is fab.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/07/2015 20:21

Thanks Atomik !

I don't get Sky,but now tv ran TWD on Fox,so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Atomik · 30/07/2015 20:22

TWD will be back in Oct.

soon after FTWD finishes, its first season one will be short, like six episodes or something like that.

Atomik · 30/07/2015 20:24

ThatBloodyWoman

In the UK I think it is harder for Sky to dominate and swipe everything. Here, not so much. So you should be in with a (zombie) fighting chance, no ?

madcapped · 30/07/2015 20:24

I also have a prepper pinterest board. Grin I haven't done a thing irl as where we live seems such a low risk area.

My parents however are sort of prepper-ish out of necessity. They live in an area with high storm tides and hurricanes where their power can be out for a week or more. No power where they are means no running water or cooking as they have no gas or water mains serving their area. Their hot tub kept us in warm bucket baths for a week when I was still living at home!

CatMilkMan · 30/07/2015 20:26

yes but that's because I'm an immature man child with no kids and a high income.

madcapped · 30/07/2015 20:32

They take disaster preparedness very seriously in dp's area as well. Last time I was visiting there were psa ads up all over the shopping mall for people to have food and water stores at home and an evacuation plan in place.

MrsJorahMormont · 30/07/2015 21:00

The trouble with reading those boards is that you start drooling over water filters and generators instead of buying a few extra tins of beans Smile

swiss where?

I'm going with Findhorn....

iwanttogotothechaletschool · 30/07/2015 21:52

I now have my zombie preparedness plan.

I will stock up on Mr Brain's frozen faggots, in the event of a zombie attack I will use them as frozen missiles. If they fail to permanently disable the zombies then hopefully the reference to brain and the appearance of the faggots will confuse the zombies into thinking they are real brains and they will munch on them thus losing all interest in sucking out my brain. Failing that I shall find myself a flaming torch and see them off with some forceful brandishing of said torch.

Come on you zombies, I am ready for you!

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/07/2015 22:41

I live in www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/07/20/the-really-big-one the Cascadia subduction/tsunami area. We have to have enough food/water etc. for 72 hours (according to the government/Fire Department).

In the event of Zombies my plan is to head out to the First Nations nearby. I know a lot of people in those communities; they hunt, fish, have mad skills in the environments. We live on an island (so fingers crossed no swimming zombies). We'll be fine Also DD at 4 is nutty and will do very well in a survivalist future.

swisscheesetony · 31/07/2015 08:39

TBW - Scottish islands. :)

OverAndAbove · 31/07/2015 08:52

I plan to live off rainwater and my copious supply of stored body fat

Yes! This is my plan too. Once that's gone, I'll probably start eating my husband. I thought about starting with the DCs but they are both skinny and bony, and might come in useful for fetching and carrying. I'll be fine.

MrsJorahMormont · 31/07/2015 10:20

I could do the body fat and rain water thing for a while here too.
