I don't like chewing noise, sniffing, slurping. It gives me rage. I can ignore it to a point but can feel the anxiety and loathing bubbling up. It makes me want to cry. Usually I just walk away or leave the room.

Anyway. Someone was sitting a bit close to me and slurped. I snapped and told them to please stop.

H tells me it was rude to. I think it would have been more rude to just punch her without warning.

What am I supposed to do? Keep quiet? I know I do irritating stuff but is it really rude to say 'please don't sniff' or 'if you slurp your tea down my ear I may punch you'.

Misophonia has been mentioned on this thread and others. If you are misophonic (?) then your behaviour would still be rude, but understandable.

Otherwise it's just plain rude.

i was in the same position with a work colleague, she kept snott gobling
i thought i was going to be sick, after about half hour i couldnt take anymore
i gave her some tissue and said ffs blow your nose.
a grown woman doing that fucking gross

AnnPerkins · 28/07/2015 10:24

I don't think you were rude. And I wouldn't apologise or call it my problem either.

I think it's rude to slurp tea. It's a horrible noise and totally avoidable. Do people think it's OK to chew loudly with their mouth open in the office? Or drum their fingers on a desk?

My DH's latest annoyance is eating porridge. He has to sort of roll it round his tongue with his mouth open because it's too hot. I have to leave the room.

Hilarious, just read your own post, 'snapping is ok because it's better than punching'. Yes, if you're two.

I can't stand those noises either but, they're just a consequence of being near people.

Hmm

Ever thought of Anger Management OP ?

Oh and I chew chewing gum (Trying to stop smoking) , if you asked me to stop chewing I would simply ignore you. If you punched me whilst having a "rage" well ... be prepared for one back.

RachelRagged · 28/07/2015 16:46

Gobbling ? Is that a local term ?

I only ask as we also use the term gobbling , but certainly does not involve noses. Grin

SnapesCapes · 28/07/2015 16:50

DH has always insisted I'm batshit when it comes to hearing other people eat and only recently announced he think I have that disorder Misophonia.

It drives me mad but I'd never chide anyone for eating loudly because it's my problem, not theirs. (The only exception to the rule would be the DCs; I can't abide seeing children eating with their mouths open).

elbowsdontsing2 · 28/07/2015 16:52

not sure if its a local term, i know the other term your on about and its alot nicer than the one im on aboutyou really dont want to khow

ACSlater · 28/07/2015 20:15

I have a problem with my nose which means I can't blow it. I have to sit there with tissue up each nostril constantly or sniff. You can't sit at work with tissue up your nose. If someone gave me a tissue and said fgs blow your nose I'd probably snort snot at them.

A grown woman, indeed!

Its not only annoying it's bad manners.
Whilst in a waiting room today there was a kid slurping his drink then say 'ahhhh' after every slurp. He did this about 10times I had to leave the room.
