I'm a clean person, wash once or twice a day.. but earlier my DPexclaimed in disgust that my bellybutton was dirty. Now my bellybutton is a bit..sunk in somewhat since my 2nd DS was born a few months ago so i havn't looked inside it, but when i did it was pretty scummy.

DP says it's common sense to rub a finger in your bellybutton in the shower but i've literally NEVER heard of or been told about this.

so basically am i a scummy bastard lacking life knowledge or am i justified in having an unpleasant bellybutton?

If you have an "innie", it will collect gunk. You need to wash every nook and cranny, why wouldn't you?! Shock

poppym12 · 27/07/2015 11:26

Mine is only like a weird dent. maybe I'm not human? just had a look and a sniff but nothing there at all. showered half an hour ago but i didn't really give it an obvious jiggle then.

KinkyAfro · 27/07/2015 11:31

I had an infection in mine last year, it felt a bit uncomfortable then one day at work I caught a whiff of this horrible smell. Didn't think it was me, thought it was a colleague Blush who was known for quite bad body odour. This was awful though, really, really smelly and when I went to the loo, I found out why. I'd had pus and blood dripping from my belly button the stench was awful and it was becoming very painful. I've had a couple since but the doctor told me to make sure I don't shove anything in there and just rinse out with water

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 27/07/2015 11:40

I've got a very small, flat one with a scar on from an op. I"m not overweight so not squished in or anything. I've never, ever washed it. I shower every morning and have a bath every night, so assume it's just clean.

I can't bear touching my own bellybutton. It makes me want to scream - too sensitive and just wrong.

The5DayChicken · 27/07/2015 11:52

I always did wonder why people speak about picking things out of their belly buttons. Figured it can't have gathered that much shit since their last shower. But it turns out people don't clean them for some reason?!?!? Shock Mine is really deep but I still clean it!

No, because it hurts my vagina too.

I lay in the bath and call it good.

WienerDiva · 27/07/2015 12:40

I have a very deep inny, I get the sharp smear test vagina pain too.

I also give it a sluice with a soapy finger everyday in the shower.

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2015 12:47

I wonder if the shape, as well as depth has something to do with stuff gathering in there. Mine is a normal, but not very deep, inny. There is absolutely nothing in mine I'm a bit disappointed , but the shape of it lets water and other stuff out (it slopes down, IYSWIM).

TheHappinessTrap · 28/07/2015 22:53

For those of you who don't wash behind your ears, scrape back there lightly worth a fingernail, anything?

Fluffyears · 28/07/2015 23:19

Mine is very deep AmAnd the two sides touch together so it's just a little line like an'I' I have had stinky infections from poking about in there. Dr told me not to touch it similar to the inner ear. I clean it twice a week with a cotton bud dipped in tea tree and just gently swab it. Dp has a large shallow belly button so I can see the bottom of his.

Fluffyears · 28/07/2015 23:21

The happiness, nope nothing apart from a sirebit behind my ear Angry

Fluffyears · 28/07/2015 23:21

*sore bit

Mrsmorton · 28/07/2015 23:29

A fairly large proportion of MNers don't even clean their teeth twice a day let alone wash their belly buttons. That said, I think they are self cleaning to a point, as pp said, like ears.

DoTheDuckFace · 28/07/2015 23:31

I am pretty slim but have a cavernous belly button, it goes in so deep and it makes me feel sick even thinking about touching it. I have a half hearted swish of it round the opening but can't bear to get right in. I have occasionally been able to pull out packed gunk if I get some tweezers in there but it makes me feel faint. It comes from deeper then my fingers can even reach and I worry that my tummy will burst open!

LegoComplex · 29/07/2015 08:17

i do brush my teeth twice a day! as i sad consider myself pretty clan..nothing behind the ears. Infection sounds horrific! this has got me thinking though, who knows what's really inside the cavenous ones.. should get a microscope down there!

Reading this I suddenly had a horrible vision of having a belly button full of gunk......I've just had a look and it appears to be ok. It appears I have a slight innie but it's very shallow so maybe that's why I've escaped the compacted gunk. I'm going to get my husband to have an look at his tonight as I fear he has a very deep innie indeed.

Wouldn't you think that the act of having a shower would clean your belly button just by the running water...although I suppose it depends on how you have your spray positioned.

Fascinating subject int it Grin

MaidOfStars · 29/07/2015 18:45

I wonder if men, with the higher propensity to collect gunk-absorbing fluff in their belly buttons, have a lower rate of infection there?
