I don't want to be that parent tying up a&e but I'm umming and aahing. 10 month old has had diarrhoea since last Saturday when we returned from holiday (nowhere exotic or Ebola esque) fine in himself so no real concern, now we're 36 hours into him also being lethargic, not eating, nasty cough and little red pin prick dot rash on tummy.
Contacted 111 and had out of hours appt at 5pm, instantly before looking, diagnosed viral infection similar to rotavirus. Upon checks his throat was very red and inflamed but again, it would be viral. Temperature was 39.1, prescribed cuddles and seeing how it went.
He's absolutely boiling despite ibuprofen, shattered but wakes up crying or after a poo and he just seems so poorly, normally a little crawling bruiser/whirlwind but won't even crawl, just lays his head on blanket and does a pathetic cry until picked up. He's in bed now but just checked and restless sleep, head wet with sweat. Do I stick it out as a viral infection or get him checked out? AIBU to ignore doctor (who was lovely) and take him to a&e or do I accept it's just a viral infection making him very poorly? He's not pfb and just seems so out of sorts. Sorry it's so long

Id definitely push for him to be seen soon, things change and if you feel he ought to be checked out, trust your instincts, hope he's feeling better very soon x

BeaufortBelle · 25/07/2015 21:24

Your sentence about the red pin-prick rash on his tummy. Have you done the glass test? Is it blanching, ie, does the rash disappear when you press on it with the bottom of a glass? If not, 999 NOW. It is a symptom of meningitis. Even if it does blanch, disappear, your little boy sounds as though he needs to be seen by a doctor tonight and I'd say the quickest way is to take him to a&e and before the pubs turn out.

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 25/07/2015 21:27

Yes, he's lethargic take him. He's only little and children go down quickly.

MrsTatum1980 · 25/07/2015 21:28

Doctor didn't give anything, no throat spray and advised against dehydration sachets! but we popped a squeezy yoghurt in the freezer earlier and he had some of that. Going to get him seen again at the OOH, it's a sit and wait job so heading off soon but thank you for your reassurances to go. I'll update when I can but fingers crossed it is just a bug that's knocked him for six.

Rash does disappear and no aversion to lights etc, have checked that as it went through my mind!

Good luck MrsT. Hope he gets seen soon.

LovesYoungDream · 25/07/2015 21:34

Could it be chicken pox? Poor baby. I would take him in if you are concerned, better to be safe than sorry, especially when he is so young and his symptoms are persisting

MrsPeabody · 25/07/2015 21:34

Why can't you alternate calpol and nurofen at 10 months? I'm willing to bet they give him a dose at the a&e.

Hope all goes well.

DoeEyedNear · 25/07/2015 21:37

Poor kid. Let's hope he's on the mend soon.

BoffinMum · 25/07/2015 21:38

DS1 had something similar as a baby. I think if he was drinking I would probably sit it out, but if he was not drinking, or not drinking enough, I would head into A and E.

BoffinMum · 25/07/2015 21:40

PS I would alternate Calpol and Ibuprofen syrup and I also think A and E would do that first.

Gunpowder · 25/07/2015 21:40

MrsP I was told because the combination is so good at bringing down fever, you/even the doctors might miss something serious. The fever in itself isn't the problem IYSWIM, more what's causing it.

RattleAndRoll · 25/07/2015 21:42

Hope your little one is OK Flowers

Purplepoodle · 25/07/2015 21:44

From nhs website
If your child seems distressed, consider giving them children’s paracetamol or ibuprofen. These shouldn’t be given together. However, if you give your child one medicine and it doesn’t seem to be helping, it’s OK to try the other one before the next dose is due.

I would give calpol, give it an hour to see if his temp drops

zobey · 25/07/2015 21:54

I had similar with my dd when we came back off holiday. Turned out dd, dh and myself all had cryptosporidium and were on 1st name terms with environmental health. Took to fully recover from it about 3-4 months. If you have been abroad pleae take a stool sample in and ask to have it checked for this.

wheelycote · 25/07/2015 22:22

Would take to A&E

twirlypoo · 25/07/2015 22:29

I hope you get seen soon, you have def made the right decision. Let us know how you get on Thanks

CoperCabana · 25/07/2015 22:29

Hope you get a thorough exam and all is well. As others said, they NEVER mind seeing little ones, and I have taken mine in for similar on a few occasions.

Tinkypoooooooo · 25/07/2015 22:31

Don't worry about other people and take him into A&E. Better safe then sorry.

youarekiddingme · 25/07/2015 22:36

I'm glad your getting a re check. With babies you just can't wait because they detriorate so fast.

Hope you get some answers soon and LO is on the mend.

Battleshiphips · 25/07/2015 22:40

I would take him in. Especially if medication isn't bringing down his temp much. Poor little thing. Hope he's ok.

Muddlewitch · 25/07/2015 22:41

Hope he is better soon, it's horrible when they are poorly.

Gunpowder · 26/07/2015 07:04

Hope everything is ok, OP.

Providore · 26/07/2015 07:10

Where was your holiday? I had a friend whose family picked up giardia in Spain.
