To leave washing out in the rain....

DH put the washing out to dry. Now it's rained, so it's wet again.its going to belt it down all day. Should I bring it back inside before it gets more wet or do I accept it's as wet as it can be and leave it out?

Also, does it need rewashing now it's been rained on? Thoughts please!

Def would NOT wash agin. Just bring in and dry inside or tumble dry. Have always done this and never had a problem with it smelling unfreeze or looking grubby, rain water is also a natural softener.

Bansheebou · 24/07/2015 18:32

unfresh!!!

specialsubject · 24/07/2015 19:21

we still have steeltowns? Or are you not in the UK?

Carpediem1 · 24/07/2015 19:40

An elderly lady we knew in rainy north west Scotland called raining on washing a "heavenly rinse". In Somerset we find we use it a lot too!

penny13610 · 24/07/2015 19:46

Leave it out, clothes that have been rained on smell and feel so gorgeous. I frequently leave washing out over night, morning dew is the best fabric softener going. I like to embrace my inner slut Grin

Georgethesecond · 24/07/2015 19:49

Clothes that have been rained on do not look dirty or smell funny.
If it is forecast to keep raining I would spin it then tumble dry.
If it is forecast to be dry I would leave it out.
But I don't know why I rely on weather forecasts.....

Methe · 24/07/2015 19:49

Towels and dark stuff I wouldn't re wash but whites and delicates would definitely need it.

I much prefer line dried crispy towels to strange soft tumble dried ones. All the better if they've been rained on.. They smell real!

Olivo · 24/07/2015 19:52

Mine has been out since this morning and will stay till its dry, probably tomorrow lunchtime. I Envy the smell of rain washed clothes!

MrsMummyPig · 24/07/2015 19:52

Yes special in the uk and Tata steel are practically my next door neighbours Grin

Methe you have to check out rained on silk and wool, it is the real deal.
If it is not dry in three days, bring it in and spin it again.

Methe · 24/07/2015 20:13

Fat chance of me owing anything silk but I'll give the wool a try Grin

PuppyMonkey · 24/07/2015 20:14

Very

Number666livesaMrMIller · 24/07/2015 20:14

Rain is natures fabric conditioner Grin
Leave it out!

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 24/07/2015 20:16

We have lovely clean rain. I don't rewash.

Bringing in dripping wet clothes must be a massive pain in the arse Confused

SillyOldElfBackToYourself · 24/07/2015 20:23

I leave mine out, it smells nice and fresh round here if it's been rained on.
I also put mine out at night so I don't have to do it in the morning and peg it out with random multi coloured pegs Shock which seem to be crimes to some people on MN Grin

VulcanWoman · 24/07/2015 20:27

I think I'd leave it out or put it on spin cycle maybe, wouldn't wash again, the only thing I've found leaving out at night, you get cob webs/spiders on clothes.

VulcanWoman · 24/07/2015 20:29

Sillyoldelf, I mix plastic multicoloured pegs with wooden one's Shock

englishmummyinwales · 24/07/2015 20:29

This happened to me earlier in the week. I left it out and it dried beautifully the next day. We're rural although farmers' bonfires are the bane of my life, I swear they wait until they see me going out with the basket.

Sparklingbrook · 24/07/2015 20:31

It's muck spreading here. Lovely warm day, hang the washing out and then have to get it in because otherwise it will smell of cow. Sad

10lbsleft · 24/07/2015 20:33

i love the smell and feel of rained on washing. i would just leave it out til it dried.

MrsFrankRicard · 24/07/2015 21:01

I leave it until it is dry again and I LOVE the smell of rained on washing Confused

Carpediem1 · 24/07/2015 21:05

What is the world coming to if we can't leave out washing in the rain because it will get dirty - mumsnetters campaign needed

kiggenpaws · 24/07/2015 22:51

I caved and legged it out in the rain to bring it in. Seriously forgot how heavy rained on clothing is. Gave it a quick spin in the machine but didn't fully rewash. Then was moaned at by DH as I'd changed the washing machine settings..... It's now drying on a clothes horse in our spare bedroom.

The idea of washing just flapping away in the dark at night just weirds me out. Not entirely sure why.

Oh kiggenpaws you chicken, bet it's still not dry. Sun is out in the midlands. No you'll have to peg it out again!! Can't beat dried outside linen.

Enigma64 · 06/07/2019 09:35

I have found the people who leave washing out in the rain over night are very strange unchooed people usually have no regard for anything or anyone i'm quoting from neighbours i encountered both sides of were i had a property. Big city by the docks washing got dirty and smelt you would have to be thick not to no that. One neighbour was a civil servant and the other worked for the local council i rest my case.
