a friend is going on holiday , leaving two dogs at home , he is going to ask someone to pop in every day in the morning to unlock the dog flap ,put food out and top up water , then go back later to lock flap for the night , has any one else done this or do you think it is unreasonable .

Totally unreasonable, anyone who loves their dogs would never ever do that. I wouldn't put mine in kennels but it is perfectly okay to do that. Can't believe your friend isn't even willing to do that.

yes i said it was too long to leave them without anyone looking in , he said they would be fine ,neighbours did complain last time , they said one night they were left from 9pm till 9am indoors ,and barking at 3am , hes too tight to pay for kennels .

I think your friend needs to prepared for coming home to an empty house after the dogs have been seized. Why have dogs if you don't want to look after them? I wouldn't hesitate to call the rspca and I'd be telling him that.

Report to the dog warden.

How disgraceful. I can't imagine being so irresponsible and thoughtless. Those poor dogs.

Branleuse · 23/07/2015 22:35

your friend is a cunt. Who even does this??

Birdsgottafly · 23/07/2015 22:45

Having had a dog contract Kennel cough, despite the vaccination, which because the dog was stressed in kennels, develop into Pneumonia, I try to avoid kennels.

However, ideally the person should be spending time interacting with the dogs and giving walks.

Kennels don't always walk them twice a day, they just let them run free in the grounds.

If you have pets, you've got to just get over, paying boarding costs.

I've ended friendships over the ill treatment of pets.

If the dogs have the opportunity to be out from 8am to 10pm then he may come back to no dogs. Dogs are going missing/being stolen from gardens even with owners at home in the house.

paulapompom · 24/07/2015 00:36

Would he not at least pay for a proper pet sitter to feed AND walk, interact and play with the dogs for a couple of hours a day? My friend (who never leaves her dogs ) has seen stuff online about dogs being stolen from gardens, and that would worry me with these dogs being outside with no-one around also if a dog was ill could the person popping in get it to the vet quickly? Seems a lot that could go wrong. Doubt any agency will step in though. If he lives in the north west I'd go an walk them myself !!!!
