Am I a bit precious or is this a bit gross?

Neighbour (young woman) just knocked on my door...I'd only just got out of bath so spoke through door to her....she wanted to borrow DH's hair clippers ....her friend is visiting and as she has the side of her hair shaved, my neighbour wanted to give her a trim.

I was a bit taken aback so said "I'm not sure where they are...Ill have a look and get back to you."

But it's gross isn't it? A bit of a personal item surely?

How would she even know if your OH had clippers? It's a very strange request.

GraysAnalogy · 23/07/2015 16:50

It's really weird but I'd probably laugh and just say yeah fine

Floggingmolly · 23/07/2015 16:53

Why would you "happily" lend someone hair clippers for use on a complete strangers head, Coffee? It's a weird thing to feel so good about doing.
The barber thing is irrelevant, as well. They're sterilised between uses.

Totality22 · 23/07/2015 16:57

Bizarre on many levels.
a) how does neighbour know your DH uses clippers?
b) why on Earth would she decide on a whim to shave her mates hair?
c) does no-one work? It is Thursday afternoon right?

howabout · 23/07/2015 17:00

My OH doesn't even let me lend out his screwdrivers let alone his clippers. Men, or maybe just mine, are funny about their personal kit.
Your neighbour sounds like she has boundary issues.

FayKorgasm · 23/07/2015 17:04

Ds shares his clippers with his friends. I don't see the big deal.

ScoutRifle · 23/07/2015 17:05

She can borrow my DH's clippers if she wants or even my dogs have their own clippers which she could use. It really doesn't bother me in the slightest and my dh & dogs couldn't give a toss either.

TheHouseOnBellSt · 23/07/2015 18:29

Totality she works three days a week in a school....I work from home.

She knows DH has clippers as she commented on his hair recently and he said he'd done it himself.

I use the same clippers to do DH's hair and the dogs'.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 23/07/2015 22:37

Barbers electric clippers aren't sterilised anywhere I've been - they may be wiped over with a cloth or sprayed but the main power unit can't be bleached or dunked in solution.

I clipper my DH and DS' hair but only because it's easy and cheap, they used to go to the barber and would again if we didn't live in the back of beyond.

UrethraFranklin1 · 23/07/2015 23:39

WE use a hygiene spray. The power unit doesn't touch your head so why would it need to be disinfected?

MrsMummyPig · 23/07/2015 23:55

Are you sure shes not a witch and was secretly trying to get hold of a lock of his hair for some kind of spell? Grin

ReginaBlitz · 24/07/2015 00:09

Or for a Dna test... She hasn't recently had a baby had sheGrin

The only use for our clippers is to trim dh's pubes and armpit hair, so not for sharing.

Every gents barbers I've ever been to uses clippers with detachable blades and sterilises them between customers. Wouldn't go to one that didn't.

iamanintrovert · 24/07/2015 02:06

It's a bit of an "intimate" request. I'd say no.

sykadelic · 24/07/2015 03:28

I don't think it's too personal an item to ask to borrow, but I do think your relationship (based on your posts) isn't on the level of sharing. She's effectively a stranger at the bus stop. You wouldn't ask to borrow their's so it's just weird.

That said, I'd ask your DH. Ultimately it's his decision.

p.s. My DH's do the dogs too :P

BabyFeets · 24/07/2015 08:39

Even though hairdressers do this I do think it's a personal item

AliceScarlett · 24/07/2015 08:54

I can see how it is gross. I would have done this a few year's ago though.... Maybe it shows how comfortable she is with your family??
