AIBU to think there seriously needs to be something done about holiday prices?

I don't have kids so I've never noticed how much prices actually go up! I start a new job in September so I'm looking for a short 3 night break in August before I start for DP and me.

I'm disgusted!!! Last year, my mum, cousin and I went to Salou for 4 nights, half board, flights included for a total of £361 (for all 3 of us) in September! To book this same holiday in August is £1021.

There seriously needs to be something done about it! That's only for two of us! For three nights! How can parents afford to pay for summer holidays for their kids alongside the cost of every day life?!

Hardly on the top of the government's agenda, but I really think this needs to be cracked down on!

Don't blame the travel industry for this issue. It causes as many problems for them as it does for their customers.

Blame the government.

Sky high holiday prices in July and August are caused by rigid, inflexible school holidays which create huge spikes in demand for a few weeks of the year. As every GCSE economics student knows, sharply increased demand for a fixed amount of product will inevitably result in much higher prices.

The travel industry would love demand to be more evenly distributed throughout the year. It would make their lives much simpler. They would have less unsold inventory, and fewer holidays sold at a loss during off-peak times, and prices would be lower at busy times.

YABU its suppply and demand the basic fundamentals of the market. In any case who would you have do anything, under what remit could the Government do anything about the costs of hotels etc in a different country.

having saved for a week away every 3 years or so, i now feel quite relieved that my only child is 16, finished school and no longer wants to go away with me Grin

It's called capitalism. You know, that thing that you like when it comes to being paid and buying stuff, but you don't like when it comes to market forces making your holliers a bit pricey?

What something would be done? And by who? Holidays cost what the sellers can get for them. End of story.

Turkey holiday price reduction is probably cheaper this year due to proximity of Syria. At a guess!

I'm 41. My parents were only just able to afford to have me, so I'm an only child. Our first family holiday together was when I was 13 to a holiday camp on the Isle of Wight. Because they couldn't afford it.

I have not grown up scarred for life for not having been on a foreign holiday until I was 37 (my choice after 18 due to fear of flying and all my holidays were UK or Ireland and absolutely fabulous). I don't think my parents were scarred either.

It is no different to anything else, when there is a sale it is of stock or experiences ( in this cases holidays) that have not sold at full price so are discounted thence in clothing sales it seems just to be size 6 and size 18 or the green colour way not the white etc

No one would have discounted flowers on 13 & 14 February but they might on 16th, so no discounted holiday in august but maybe later .

YABU. Sure, it's annoying. But at the end of the day, holidays are a luxury not a necessity or some kind of human right.
Personally, I think something should be done about the cost of eating out, or the price of designer clothes Grin
