To run, on my own, without a phone

It doesn't seem that strange to me, remembering a time when I had to go everywhere without a phone, but people keep telling me how dangerous it is.

I can't help thinking a phone won't actually protect me from anything:

  • What if you get attacked? It would be awful, but the phone won't stop it happening.

-What if you're injured? I'll limp home, or if it's that bad ask a passer-by or nearby house for help

-What if you fall and bang your head? As above, unless I'm unconscious, in which case how would I make a phone call?

Thinking about it though, there is no right or wrong answer. It's whatever makes you feel comfortable doing what you want to do. If not taking the phone means you stay at home, take the phone out. Whatever you want.

It takes seconds to take the phone. I walk and very often don't see a soul for miles so asking someone for help wouldn't be possible.
Like all things on MN just do what suits you and you feel happy with.

I am off for a run in a few minutes. I shall not be taking a phone - we used to manage quite well without them!

I never take mine with me when I run or walk the dog. I love being out of contact for a while and I don't live anywhere rural so if I were to be injured I'd be found pretty quickly! Funnily the only person to take issue with this is sil who gets very annoyed if her calls are not answered immediately!!

The one and only time I have been in an emergency situation, car broke down, I didn't have my phone or any money on me but I was able to knock on someone's door and got help. Where we live mobile reception is so poor that you probably wouldn't get any signal anyway.

I do think many people are over reliant on their mobiles, I was on holiday recently and most days we went on lovely boat trips - 90% of the other guests (anyone under 35ish) seemed glued to their phone the whole time rather than enjoying the scenery or - shock - talking to other people. Grin.

I eventually got two phones, the phone I take cycling is an old fashion small pay as you go, it cost about £10. Only DP has the number and I have set strict boundaries for situations it can be used. Essentially it's for me to make an emergency call if I need to.

Yes we have a PAYG cheapie that anyone can take out if they want and will only need to call for a lift home.

As you are clearly an adult yanbu at all as its up to you. The panic amongst some that 'something might happen' the second they don't have a signal I'm Confused about in general as like you I remember not having one!

But if something did happen and you were somewhere remote you may be glad of it!

I have only had a mobile for 18 months, so seems far from an essential to me. Have just been away camping for 9 days there was very little signal so I just turned it off for the duration.

I don't always take it with me anyway and often forget to charge it, it is usually turned off at the weekend when I go on long walks with the dogs, often alone.

I hate how mobile technology has enslaved people, there is no need for it, it just creates a culture of fear.

Just be careful where you carry it. My dh used to work in a mobile phone shop and lost count of the number of women who came in with water-damaged phones but swore they'd never got their phones wet. Finally it transpired that people were putting their phones in their sports bra while they ran and the sweat was causing serious damage over time.
