To ask how the hell you make a career/job work with summer holidays

I work in advertising in London but we plan to move to the Midlands in time for primary school. My media job won't really travel and I'm keen to do a job that allows me to be with the kids in the summer holidays, because we have no family to help and 6 weeks of summer camps seems too much and too expensive. I'm tempted by moving into teaching (primary or secondary) but suspect I'm naive about how hard it is. That said, it helps that I'll have the majority of holidays with my 2 DC. What do others do to allow them to make the most of work and family? Are there part time jobs /rewarding media sales jobs in more rural areas (Coventry, Warwick) that allow you to take the whole summer off?! Can't imagine it! So what do I do, and Aibu to ask how on earth you guys do it!???

Plenty of term time only/school hours admin jobs at the University I work for.

I work as a Nurse and in the school holidays I have always worked mainly nights / weekends and evening shifts to keep childcare costs low. I have 4 kids and am lucky to have good emolyers who are flexible during holiday times. Me and my dh tend to take seperate annual leave with just one week off together and the rest is juggled working around each other.

A mix of - work from home, annual leave from DH and I, a few days at a relatives house, and holiday clubs. This year the teens have been looking after the 8 year old and it's been a godsend.

The whole school holiday thing and holiday childcare provision really needs to be looked at imo - it's just not fit for a 2015 purpose.

I wish universities did close over summer... Sigh...

Anyway, annual leave for a couple of weeks (to go on holiday), then both of us take days here and here, plus I'm part time so that's fewer days to cover. Mil is doing one day for us (to keep her happy. If it was up to me I'd keep her well out of childcare arrangements). They are going to a childminder for a few days too.

We did sign both dc up for a holiday club but dd1 got so stressed about it I couldn't send her. She'd have gone if any of her friends were though.

Ooh that's exciting about parental leave extended till 18

I stand corrected on uni term time jobs! I work in one and don't have enough time off in holidays and no one I know does. Maybe in other departments though

I married a teacher. It's great. I used to have a term-time only job myself (school admin) but actually found that the long holidays did my head in - I need work to stay sane! Now I have a fab job working from home, mornings only, so I have the best of both worlds - still working but with more than enough time with the kids as well Smile

KenAdams · 23/07/2015 16:03

What about becoming a consultant and not taking on contracts over the holidays?

Purplepoodle · 23/07/2015 21:02

Work pt and use summer scheme for all except one week of hols.

Silvercatowner · 23/07/2015 21:08

I wish universities did close over summer. Oh yes, so do I. Academic and ex-teacher here - my still-teaching friends have just broken up and can't get their heads round the fact that I have a set number of days on leave.
