To have parked in a Mother and Child space?

Out and about in town today with my disabled mum. There's a smallish supermarket that we needed to visit. All of the disabled spaces were full, so I parked in a mother and child. Mum needs to be able to open the door fully to get out, as she uses a wheelchair. The only other choice was a single (between two cars) standard space where my Mum would have been unable to leave the car.

We were just leaving the car when I was confronted by a very cross lady who told me I shouldn't have been parking there. We put the blue badge on.

Was it unreasonable of me to use this space? (There were at least five M&C spaces open.)

YANBU. You can use a Blue Badge to park on double yellow lines, so why not a parent and child space?

TinyManticore · 25/07/2015 15:21

I am astounded that anyone in their right mind would think it was unreasonable. It is bizarre that anyone would confront you over this.

YANBU and the woman was an idiot. Disability trumps everything and you needed the space to unload the wheelchair.

I use the P&C spaces with my DD(9). So hoik up you judgey pants, FernieB .

'I should buy a smaller bloody car then.'

What is that even meant to mean? Was she saying that you should buy a smaller car or she should?

LittleLionMansMummy · 25/07/2015 17:39

YANBU. At all.

OP, YANBU. I was parking in a P&C space a while ago, and saw an elderly lady and her friend trying to get a disabled space. They were all full, so I pulled out and gave them the P&C space.
I never understand why people get so het up about P&C spaces though. They do no one any harm. And with the introduction of car seats-especially the first ones for small baby, a space with extra room to open the door is so handy. Also if you have a few small kids the space is extra safe as you unload them all.It isn't essential, it doesn't have to be near the door,of course you can do without one.
But it is a small thing that makes life just a teeny bit easier for a parent. Why begrudge it? Confused

I think a house share might be in order alice!

Passmethecrisps · 25/07/2015 21:23

Oh bugger. Wrong thread. Anyone here fancy a parking share?

ShadowStar · 25/07/2015 21:30

YANBU. Blue badge trumps P&C.

I definitely agree that there's no need to put the P&C parking near the shop doors.

DesertIslander · 26/07/2015 11:40

YANBU ... but those saying P&C spaces should be abolished are.

I would never begrudge a priority space to anyone who needed it.

For those who disagree with P&C spaces, why? The ordinary spaces are too narrow to open the door wide enough to get the child out of the car seat without hitting the car next door. Secondly, a space near the trolley park is very useful when shopping alone with a baby/small child. What a bizarre and selfish attitude.
