To think if you are staying at someone's house you inform them of dietary requirements?!

Agreed to let friend of a family member stay as she has a job interview that's ages and all day so needs to stay two nights.
Made a cauliflower and brocolli cheese yesterday and haven't been shopping so nothing else in. Mention this to her and she goes "oh I'm vegan and I don't eat gluten." So can't even put some pasta on for her.
Am i really not the only one that thinks to tell people of certain requirements?
And I'm eating with work tomorrow night and going away on Friday so do not want to buy any more food. Am I being unreasonable to give her directions to the nearest asda and tell her to feed herself?!

Offering the use of your kitchen and directions to Asda is more than reasonable.

However, isn't cauliflower and broccoli cheese vegan and GF? (Sorry if I am being really dim here).

The5DayChicken · 22/07/2015 20:26

She should be sorting herself out anyway really. OP doesn't actually know her so is already a saint saving her a decent chunk of money by offering up a bed.

The5DayChicken · 22/07/2015 20:27

Happy...cheese comes from milk, from cows/sheep/other milkable animals.

StackladysMorphicResonator · 22/07/2015 20:27

YANBU! She sounds like a total wet blanket. Please update - has she gone to Asda or will she go hungry? Bloody stupid and rude not to tell you she's vegan and coeliac!

The5DayChicken · 22/07/2015 20:29

She's not actually said she's coeliac (sp?) has she? Just that she doesn't eat gluten. Which may well be by choice.

ArgyMargy · 22/07/2015 20:29

And cheese sauce is usually made with flour (hence contains gluten). YANBU OP!

Happy36 · 22/07/2015 20:31

Thanks Chicken and Margy. I kind of knew I was missing something!

flipyoumelonfarmer · 22/07/2015 20:33

I'm vegan and gluten-free. You don't just not think to mention it! You warn people in advance and generally expect to bring your own food. (If they do offer to cook for you it's a bonus.) I reckon your guest actually has an eating disorder and just didn't want to eat anything.

Doubtfuldaphne · 22/07/2015 20:45

I usually take my own food as I can't eat much that most people eat. saves a lot of hassle and it's just good manners.

lastqueenofscotland · 22/07/2015 21:47

She's gone and bought some thrilling looking rice and veg.
Still moping!
I'm a veggie and a bit funny about egg so as someone that often forewarns people/asks that they don't cater for me and I'll just have drinks/brings something for myself I just find it bizarre someone wouldn't mention!

If she has these off the scale requirements then its up to her to provide for herself.

Aeroflotgirl · 22/07/2015 21:50

Yanbu she was very rude. She shoukd have told you before, you are not a mind reader.

wtffgs · 22/07/2015 21:57

My coeliac friend always travels with "supplies". You can't expect to accommodate a veganism and GF combination without warning. Wine

Peshwari · 22/07/2015 22:23

YANBU, I have frequently forgotten to mention I can't eat gluten, it just totally slips my mind. But i'd be totally fine with sorting myself out. Happier in fact as I don't really trust most people to understand the range of things that gluten is in, I know I made so many mistakes initially - I had absolutely no idea that liquorice allsorts were made from wheat!

whois · 22/07/2015 22:28

Vegan and GF?

Sounds like a socially acceptable way of avoiding food and meal time cough anorexia cough.

karinmaria · 22/07/2015 22:33

Madness (and a touch rude) not to have said anything! Especially if she is a coeliac as things can get contaminated quite easily.

A friend of mine is a vegan, and her DS is lactose intolerant. Luckily she is eminently reasonable and will always bring supplies, and remind me, if they're coming over. She is extra good because she brings non-vegan chocolate as a present each time Grin

MerryInthechelseahotel · 22/07/2015 22:38

Liquorice allsorts made from wheat? Shock

lastqueenofscotland · 22/07/2015 22:45

I don't think she's coeliac I just think she is "gluten free" hmm

Merry gluten is in everything have a frien who is actually coeliac and strawberry laces and mars bars are the two I always remember thinking she was having me on about!

minkGrundy · 23/07/2015 00:55

Not just that, some vinegars, soap if you are wheat free etc. Wine (unless you buy vegan) beer .

Did she enjoy her rice? Is it enough to last the visit or will there be further drama to come?
