AIBU to disregard rental property where the last tenant died?

We're looking for a flat to rent and have viewed one that is pretty nice and fulfils most of our requirements. However, the estate agent mentioned that the previous tenant was an elderly lady who passed away there. This has put me off slightly although my DH thinks I'm being ridiculous. Would this put you off a property??

SoupDragon funny you should say that...Grin. Joking aside I have to communicate fluently in three different languages on a daily basis, forgive me if I sometimes post without thinking.

Scarydinosaurs · 22/07/2015 13:21

Unless the wallpaper got her and you can't redecorate, you're being ridiculous.

ComposHatComesBack · 22/07/2015 13:21

If she'd been murdered last week and the blood and gizzards were splattered across the room, then yes I may think twice. Otherwise it is fairly inevitable if you live in a house of any age, that someone will have died in it at some point.

I am with your husband YABR (you are being ridiculous) although doubtlessly you'll get some woo merchant coming along in a bit telling you to 'trust your instinct.'

Raasay · 22/07/2015 13:27

Tbh even if you live in a new build you have no guarantee that someone hasn't died on the land. Although it's likely to have been a while ago if so.

BumpTheElephant · 22/07/2015 13:34

YABU. Unless the cause of her death was something to do with the house being unsafe then you are being ridiculous.

paulapantsdown · 22/07/2015 13:35

Don't be daft! People die all over the place - do you insist on a history of deaths before you sleep in a hotel room, or go into a hospital ward, or sit on a park bench, or wait at a bus stop, or stay at a friends house?

Unless her next door neighbour hacked her to death and he still lives next door, what difference will it make? Ghosts aren't real.

LemonYellowSun · 22/07/2015 13:37

We have a new build (although brownfield) and some very spooky goings-on. So don't think they are safe either Shock

limitedperiodonly · 22/07/2015 13:43

He probably did it because he was pissed off with the grammar police.

Grin And I'm a pedant who gets hung up about the difference between hanged and hung.

formerbabe · 22/07/2015 13:44

You are being ridiculous and insulting.

Crumpet1 · 22/07/2015 13:47

I can understand why it puts you off but in reality you'd be foolish to pass it by if it ticks all the boxes.
My mum died in her home and I must admit I found it really hard to go in the room or touch the mattress she died on. Don't think i would mind if it was a stranger though

CarrotVan · 22/07/2015 13:51

If you're in a position to be picky then you can be picky about whatever you want

BackforGood · 22/07/2015 13:53

Yes, YABU and a bit ridiculous.
Many properties will have had someone die in them that you won't even know about.
Why on earth would that bother you ?? Confused

FenellaFellorick · 22/07/2015 13:57

Grin soupy.

JobEmma · 22/07/2015 14:00

Thanks for all the comments, I agree that IABU but just wondered what others thought. We lived before in an old house where I'm sure people died and I didn't have a problem. I think it was being told that the lady had died that was a bit off-putting.

Soup Dragon Grin

If there is no atmosphere, OP , I wouldn't fret. When DS was a baby we moved to a rented flat with two bedrooms , but Dad would not let us have our bedroom, , felt uneasy.

Found out somebody had killed themselves in the room . . Place was not haunted if that's your fear ?

Iggi999 · 22/07/2015 14:23

I think it was daft of the estate agent to mention it. I would never tell our new neighbours that the previous occupant died in their house, why would I?

MehsMum · 22/07/2015 14:25

Our house is of indeterminate age - it's been around for several centuries, possibly as many as four. I'm sure people have argued in it, shagged in it, been born in it, contemplated murdering their MIL/FIL/DH in it, smacked their DC in it, cuddled their DC in it, burnt the roast in it, and died in it.

And...?

BeautifulBatman · 22/07/2015 14:28

Wouldn't put me off. The owner of the house next door to where we used to rent died. In his house. We were away on holiday and he wasn't found for about 4 days. It was really sad. As soon as the house went up for sale we put an offer in..... Blush

Sleepybeanbump · 22/07/2015 14:28

No unless possibly if it was particularly weird and horrible circumstances.

There are a lot of people. People die. People have died in a lot of places and you'd never even know.

depositdonut · 22/07/2015 14:29

YANBU op

She will definitely haunt you

googoodolly · 22/07/2015 15:17

YABU, but then again, I live above a funeral parlour with a morgue so I can't afford to be squeamish! Grin
