I would hire somebody.

The rug doctor works great, but quite heavy and a lot of faffing about for me.

£175 for four rooms and stairs seems a lot. We got three rooms done for £45. Look on gumtree, there are plenty of companies on there.

I wouldn't buy one, they won't get anywhere near a good as results than an industrial machine tbh.

I have a Bissell for frequent cleaning (it's great if you just want to freshen up the carpets at the weekend), I rent a rug doctor once in a while for some deeper cleaning and only use cleaners once in a blue moon (in fact, I've only done it when moving out from rental and when putting the house on the market).

I've got a vax dual and it's really good! When ds2 was vomiting and did his great impersonation of the girl from the exorcist all over the upstairs it was a Godsend!

I have some carts that have stains on, mainly greasy/oily stuff that has picked up dirt I think. Also a floor steam cleaner from my mother that you use with a microfibres cloth on the end. Does that really clean carpets? I would have thought you would need some kind of detergent to break down the dirt? Please explain/reassure.

Hire a rug doctor. Its hard work but effective. Waaaaay cheaper than hiring someone in.

I can't believe some people hire them! I have a dog, so clean my carpets every 6 weeks or so. it would cost a fortune to keep hiring.

I have a Bissell and it's just as easy as vacuuming. also good for a quick mop up when dh knocks his beer over!

I've done both. Hiring a carpet cleaner yourself does work but bit faffy.

We had a chap do it when we've decorated and he's moved our furniture. Cost a bit more but better job than doing it ourselves.

ATM (I have a newborn) I'd pay a chap to do it just for the convenience.
