AIBU to expect people not to talk over a band at a gig?

I went to see Portishead last night. Intimate warm up for their Headline of Latitude Festival, and they were brilliant.
AIBU to wish people would shut the fuck up be quiet and watch the band instead of talking all the way through the gig? At times I could hear their incessant talking above Beth Gibbons' singing. It's just rude, both to the performers and the other audience members. Go to the pub if you want a chat, or at least wait for the song to finish.

They have a very clear sign at the Jazz Cafe that says "STFU".

It really depends. Small gigs, yes, you should keep quiet. But some guy had a go at my friend for talking during The White Stripes at Leeds Fest like 10 years ago... I mean, come on. Festivals are always loud!

YANBU , I saw The Proclaimers recently and the couple who were in the seats next to mine spent the entire time either talking or going in and out to wherever they were going ( both together) ,don't know why they bothered getting the tickets .

YANBU, I don't expect people to stand in silence but if I can hear you above the band then you are too bloody loud. I also can't stand people taking millions of pics on their phones or filming half the bloody gig. Makes me sad that so many people are only able to experience life as seen through their smartphone.

Cactus normally I'd agree, but we were stood right up near the back, there weren't that many people near us, and it was the main stage, so thousands of people etc. If the guy had been so bothered he could easily have moved further forward!

Laloue23 · 18/07/2015 12:33

Slight tangent , I got so irritated with the guy next to me blatantly recording the Manics at Wolves Civic last month ( some super duper device in his top pocket) I kept "accidentally" singing into it rather loudly. Simple pleasures.

Also applauds MsRinky!
One of my all time favourite gigs is Spiritualised in the Union Chapel. You could have heard a pin drop during it.

I've learnt two things from this thread.

  1. Most think IANBU
  2. Boils My Piss is my new favourite saying!

Aargh! cactus you've reminded me of my other gig hate..."my girlfriend is at the front so you need to let me through". That's a big fat lie, isn't it?

queenrollo · 18/07/2015 15:35

if you are 6ft tall don't fucking stand in front of 5ft 3 me when there is loads of space elsewhere (unless you are BigJeff)

Love the Spiritualized stories. Poor old Jason, always looks so vulnerable. I'd have done the same...feel protective towards J and his music.

At a gig when someone next to us was phoning everyone she knew 'yah, i'm watching this band rah rah it's great rah rah'.....in the end I turned and said 'but you're not watching the band. you're gassing on your phone to all and sundry and ruining it for those of us who are trying to watch the band'....i got my own round of applause. And she fucked off.
