What's with all the shame and disgust re, menstruation?

A Mexican singer Paticia Navidad was performing on a breakfast show today when her sanitary towel fell out live on tv.

She carried on...did very well...ignored the situation. But the amount of press this has had is silly.

When will people stop connecting periods with filth and shame? I don't want my DDs to grow up in a world where this is normal...I want people to learn to accept that it's not filthy or disgusting...it's life! For those of you who are curious, the vid is all over the place.

And I would say publicity stunt too here.

Like the flash breasts at the Super Bowl.

A lot of things to do.with bodies are embarrassing. If my sanitary towel fell out on live TV I would be horrified. Not because it's to do with periods but because it is, to me, a private bodily function. I'd also be mortified if I inadvertently farted, had a bogey come out of my nose or my boob fell out of my bra, for example. Many people are embarrassed by these kinds of things. I don't mind talking about periods but I don't want someone to see my menstrual blood. I had a bad nosebleed in public once and I was mortified, who wants to see other people's bodily fluids?

Oddly a well timed thread as I was thinking about this earlier today, although in a more positive way.
Having recently read about menstural cups one brand (SoftCup) linked to a YouTube video explaining insertion.
The suggested videos sidebar featured many youngish teenagers talking about various options for periods. Several had channels dedicated to the subject.
I watched a few and was actually rather impressed by how open and honest they all were on the subject. Certainly more than I was at that age!

Marvelous! I was thinking this a week or two ago when my year 6 DD had health week and the teacher spoke about pads versus tampons...and sent the boys out!!

WHY!? Also, I had to tell DD about Mooncups myself.
