To hate being given a shot on the house after eating a meal?

I have just had lunch at a nice restaurant with DH. We turned up at 12 and left around 12.45 ish.

When they brought the bill, they also brought us a shot of amaretto each. There aren't many things I fancy less than a shot at lunchtime. Why on earth bring it?

Must point out that we only drank soft drinks so it wasn't as though we were doing lunchtime boozing.

We never get offered free shots. Where are all these nice places? :-)

BasinHaircut · 15/07/2015 15:33

I remember this once happening to me when I was having dinner with my very young looking friend. They brought out one shot of baileys-type stuff and one of orange juice!

FarFromAnyRoad · 15/07/2015 15:37

Has some bastard done that to you Pagwatch?

Tell me where - I'll send the heavies round. Chocolate giving bastards!

AliceScarlett · 15/07/2015 15:43

Where are these magical places?! Not that I drink anyway Angry

scribblegirl · 15/07/2015 15:51

Our lovely local Italian comes complete with old Italian man who hugs you like a long-lost family member when you come in (we're not regular enough for him to know us!) and ends with a shot of Limoncello, tis lovely Grin

Just leave it OP! My other half hates mint chocolate but I reckon he'd get a few Hmm faces if he moaned about getting a complimentary one at the end of a meal...

Notso · 15/07/2015 15:54

I'll swap you for the crappy mint imperials or After Eights I get.

mrsmeerkat · 15/07/2015 15:58

I would die for an amaretto this very moment :)

BitOutOfPractice · 15/07/2015 15:59

How very fucking dare they make a nice gesture to a customer! Outrageous. LTR (Leave the Restaurant)

PurpleSwift · 15/07/2015 16:02

Yabu. Lots of places give mints. I don't like mints. So what.

howabout · 15/07/2015 16:09

YANBU Would be different if it had been a long leisurely meal with a bottle of wine. Booze culture is one of the things makes me put my judgy pants on. I would probably have complained.

Wisteria1979 · 15/07/2015 16:23

I love this thread. Now feel like amaretto. The only time I get (mildly) offended is when they give me & female friends a baileys and brandy to the men. But even then I smile gently and make them swap it. It's a freebie. Not worth getting upset about.

cardibach · 15/07/2015 16:30

In this case I don't think it is 'booze culture' howabout. In many European countries it is a tradition, like chocolates with the bill here. It's a nice thing, not an invitation to get shot faced. Also a glass of Amaretto is not a 'shot' OP.

cardibach · 15/07/2015 16:30

Shit faced. Shot faced kind of works, though.

howabout · 15/07/2015 16:31

Next time put the baileys in the brandy. Although adding port to the brandy also works Wink but I still prefer to order my own poison as and when rather than having it pushed at me.

Also hate being given "healthy" coleslaw on the side.
Never object to fudge and chocolate with my coffee.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 15/07/2015 16:33

Amaretto is not a shot! It is a digestif. Nice touch.

Happy36 · 15/07/2015 16:34

I live in Spain and this is traditional here. I always say no as I don't like shots. We went out for lunch just now and so about half an hour ago we were offered shots. I refused, as usual, and received the typical response, "we have non-alcoholic ones". I like (perhaps even love) alcohol; I just don't like the taste of sugary shots. Also I adore coffee so love to leave the table with the taste of coffee (yes, I know that's foul coffee breath to everyone else!)

However, it doesn't annoy me. Most people just have a sip and use it as a nice excuse to stay longer at the table chatting.

60sname · 15/07/2015 16:36

I just say 'no thank you, I am pregnant (true)' or give it to DH to drink.

Superexcited · 15/07/2015 16:37

Just reminded me of getting a free limoncello in an Italian restaurant a couple of years ago. It was minus 5 degrees outside and the limoncello warmed my chest nicely before I went outside. Bloody inconsiderate gits giving me a free drink at the end of my meal.Grin

woodleydoodle · 15/07/2015 16:38

I don't think it is a good idea to present people with alcohol if it hasn't been ordered.

norayitwasyou · 15/07/2015 16:38

If you were in any forced or coerced into drinking it, or even made to feel uncomfortable by the staff for not drinking it, then YANBU.

Otherwise I've a spare grip you can borrow.

OurDearLeader · 15/07/2015 16:39

They probably don't chuck it away. Just give it to another table. Anyway it's probably the crappy generic stuff that costs £3 a litre to restaurants.
