'Wind your neck in' - boring, irritating, dismissive, unoriginal, condescending?

This phrase. On many threads. From many posters.

Overused. Irritating. Surely the only suitable response is 'wind your own fucking neck in'. This is a discussion forum for people to air their views after all....

I'm finding it hard to explain why use of the phrase annoys me so much. Does it irritate anyone else like this? Maybe someone can articulate this better... Blush

I think a "straw man" is a feeble argument that you pretend your opponent is making so that you can easily dismiss it. Rather than addressing their real argument which has you flumoxed.

add Godwin's Law to Straw Man and Ockham's Razor.

I hate the phrase "it grips my shit."
Gross.
I do like "jog on" and "bore off". Great for telling someone to fuck off without really saying it.

Actually that phrase has been slightly confusing me ever since I saw it (for the first time) on here. I even googled it just to try and get a proper definition, sadly with no luck. Would anyone like to attempt a definition?

GrumpyOldBiddy2 · 15/07/2015 16:26

I like it, never used it on here

GrumpyOldBiddy2 · 15/07/2015 16:26

Posted too soon... But do at home. Reminds me of my childhood, mum and dad used to say it to us!

Jakadaal · 15/07/2015 16:30

Yabu I like it and very descriptive in the context of 'pipe down' 'keep your nose out'

The Straw Man argument is when Person A says something and then Person B comes along with something that is allied but in fact has nothing to do with the original point.

I've tried so many times to give an example but failed and deleted them.

It utterly fucks me off when people on here chant: 'Straw Man! Straw Man!' when they are stuffed for a position.

It's like when we were kids and other kids chanted 'fainites' or 'I had my fingers crossed behind my back', or 'Ner, Ner, Ner, Ner, Ner.'

I want to kill them slowly.

I don't think that's an unreasonable standpoint Wink

Sorry, I didn't explain it properly the first time.

My objection to The Straw Man strategy on MN is this:

Person A says something with which Person B disagrees.

But instead of explaining her objection in a reasoned manner to Person A and explaining the reasons why she thinks Person A is mistaken, Person B just chants: 'Staw Man! Straw Man! You are a bastard, Person A. Straw Man! You cunty bastard.'

I think I've covered it.

You know when I said I wanted to kill such people slowly?

That still counts.

I don't like 'are you on glue' or 'fottfsof...' either.
