To not accept a gift from my mum to her granddaughter

Ok so my mum has bought my daughter an early birthday present (it's in November). A lovely slide that also functions as other games ( football/basket ball/croquet etc) that my daughter most probably will love. .. The issue is we only have a small yard with a shed, wooden Wendy house and a motorbike there so to accept it the only place it could go is if we got rid of the v small bistro set we have. I really don't think it's practical. She bought it on eBay for £40 so cannot return it. Now due to being a carer for my step dad this is a lot of money for her to spend... shall I say we don't want it due to space or should we grin and bare it?

PS she has seen our yard but not since we bought the Wendy house

Do they have room for it at their house? Maybe a compromise, especially if you are regular visitors.

honeyroar · 12/07/2015 21:26

Yes, ask if it could be kept at their house.

Thanks for your suggestions we don't live close to them about a 2.5 mile drive away so only see them about 6 times a year we take it in turns to visit each other so would only be there 3-4 days a year... The motorbike in the shed option won't work. .. The sheds not big enough to fit it in even if empty

2.5 miles?

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 12/07/2015 21:36

2.5 miles??
I drive or walk more than that to go to he park with my dcs.

They have obviously chosen something they think your ds will love.

Can you park the motorbike in street or drive while she plays?

I think you should try and get some use, as your dm made the effort.

dementedpixie · 12/07/2015 21:37

Is 2.5 a typo?

LongHardStare · 12/07/2015 21:43

Have it at their house or get rid of the shed and park the motorbike on the street.

Thinkmummy · 12/07/2015 21:43

Sorry I should have put 2.5 hour drive. We are not so lucky to have a driveway. It apparently would limit the turning circle space to get the bike parked whilst not in use

OP posts:
Thinkmummy · 12/07/2015 21:45

Parking the bike on the street permanently? I don't want to risk a 4 bike getting stolen for the sake of accepting a slide .

Mamiof3 · 12/07/2015 21:45

Can you keep your motorbike somewhere else, sounds like it's taking up quite a bit of garden space ?

Thinkmummy · 12/07/2015 21:47

And the shed has our push bikes in but thanks for everyone's suggestions

Ever I think you got the wrong thread Confused

5Foot5 · 12/07/2015 23:39

What is a bistro set?

DonkeyOaty · 12/07/2015 23:46

Bistro set is usually two small chairs and a wee round table, metal.

Your mum shouldn't have bought it, you haven't the space for it. But what to do...

DisappointedOne · 12/07/2015 23:52

Tell your mum to sell it on......

CrispyFern · 12/07/2015 23:54

Keep it at hers and for those three days your DD will have a blast!

ladymariner · 12/07/2015 23:55

Get rid of the bistro set, in a flash. You can easily manage without it but your dd would absolutely love the slide, and I think it was really kind of your mum to buy this for her.

molyholy · 13/07/2015 00:12

Everso wong thread I think, but very happy for you that you have a bright child Grin.

OP I would get rid of the bistro set too.

raisin · 13/07/2015 00:33

I'd ask your mum to keep it at hers, not nice to have to get rid of the only garden seating you have.

sunbathe · 13/07/2015 00:34

Or get rid of the Wendy house - does she use it much?

Thinkmummy · 13/07/2015 07:48

So I'm thinking I would be unreasonable not to accept it. ... . She does use her Wendy house and with her being only 2 there is lots of life in it and can be used year round. . Also she is at the age where I don't want to leave her unattended so hence the need for a chair/table outside

Ashbeeee · 13/07/2015 08:00

Invite your mum over and ask her to help you sort the 'problem' that you (together) have. She may comes up with an ingenious workaround (unlikely) or concede that maybe it's just not suitable and she will think again (more likely). I spent the first 2 years of my DDs existence batting off generous, well meaning but wholly innapropriate gifts from my very kind MIL. Eventually (and gently) we helped her to find more effective ways to help us and we are all happy.
Do make sure you explain the need to keep the table though. As much as we love our kids we adults need stuff too, and being able to sit outside with a cuppa or Wine is important too. You can sit with your child and play tea parties!!
