She really wants to do it and it is her last english lesson this year. Teachers, what would you think. Is it too rude? She is in y7.

year 7 is 11 and 12 (mostly 12). Secondary school. Old money year 1.

I love that poem. It was considered inappropriate to study in yr10, though - it was in our poem anthology but we were not allowed to read it.

Why does she want to do it? Does she know what the lines mean?
I suppose it's no worse than many of the pop videos and lyrics out now, but are you prepared for any parental complaints that might see your DD as the spawn of satan, leading innocents into premature knowledge of sodomy and masterbation?
If the teacher has any sense, they will check what's on offer from the students before releasing it to an audience of 11 and 12 year olds with her approval.

Don't know, it's been a long time since mine were in school. But there's an awful lot in there that I would have thought even the most liberal school would not be happy with; the casual racism, the passing reference to masturbation for starters.

No, I wouldn't due to questionable language and distasteful ethnic stereotypes.

Some of the verses would definitely cause parental distress in some of the mummies in my area if their children come home googling and quoting them.
Some of the children have to have a lie down if they see something scary in a 12 film, so parental permission is sought.
The teacher has to think about the whole class fallout, not just one possibly precocious little minx.

As for all the 'It will pass over their heads' Maybe it will. Does that make it OK?

I'd say no, because some of the language is a bit close to the mark and there are too many sexual references for a classful of year 7s. And also because I'm an easily-irritated Scot who doesn't like the racial sterotyping of Glaswegian

On the other hand, it's a lost tamer than the derived sketches that our Year 10-11 drama students performed the other week, in front of the innocent little year 6 pupils who had come to try out secondary school . So maybe she'll get away with it.
