She really wants to do it and it is her last english lesson this year. Teachers, what would you think. Is it too rude? She is in y7.

What age is y7

redheadandgoingtobed · 12/07/2015 19:29

year 7 is 11 and 12 (mostly 12). Secondary school. Old money year 1.

Was she asked to perform; or is she just planning to hijack the class??

Suefla62 · 12/07/2015 19:31

Wouldn't want it in my class.

JoanofDark · 12/07/2015 19:31

I think Y7 is a bit young for that.

Andrewofgg · 12/07/2015 19:31

Fantastic! Go for it!

But Atlantis should be Atlanta - it's a reference to the Union Army burning it in 1864.

RepeatAdNauseum · 12/07/2015 19:31

I love that poem. It was considered inappropriate to study in yr10, though - it was in our poem anthology but we were not allowed to read it.

redheadandgoingtobed · 12/07/2015 19:34

Floggingmolly
everyone in the class has been asked to learn something to say in class (poem, extract, speech etc)

Why does she want to do it? Does she know what the lines mean?
I suppose it's no worse than many of the pop videos and lyrics out now, but are you prepared for any parental complaints that might see your DD as the spawn of satan, leading innocents into premature knowledge of sodomy and masterbation?
If the teacher has any sense, they will check what's on offer from the students before releasing it to an audience of 11 and 12 year olds with her approval.
I'd say no.

littleflick · 12/07/2015 19:38

"In the sack"

Ledare · 12/07/2015 19:39

References to anal sex and masturbation? They'll probably not be noticed.

pigsDOfly · 12/07/2015 19:40

Don't know, it's been a long time since mine were in school. But there's an awful lot in there that I would have thought even the most liberal school would not be happy with; the casual racism, the passing reference to masturbation for starters.

Does she even understand what some of the words mean?

Not sure it's suitable material for an 11 year old to perform in school.

SanityClause · 12/07/2015 19:40

What's so awful about that? The children are 11 and 12. I suspect most of them won't understand the allusions to anal sex and masturbation, any way.

ladygracie · 12/07/2015 19:41

Does she understand it? And know what each line refers to? Have they been given any guidance or does she just really like it?

ElkTheory · 12/07/2015 19:42

No, I wouldn't due to questionable language and distasteful ethnic stereotypes.

HagOtheNorth · 12/07/2015 19:42

'What makes it inappropriate?
Genuine question.'

Some of the verses would definitely cause parental distress in some of the mummies in my area if their children come home googling and quoting them.
Some of the children have to have a lie down if they see something scary in a 12 film, so parental permission is sought.
The teacher has to think about the whole class fallout, not just one possibly precocious little minx.

no guidance has been given
does anyone know of a good poem that i could suggest to her as an alternative (minus anything innapropriate)?

OP posts:
HagOtheNorth · 12/07/2015 19:44

So, OP. Why this poem? Why does she like it?
As for all the 'It will pass over their heads' Maybe it will. Does that make it OK?

AChickenCalledKorma · 12/07/2015 19:45

I'd say no, because some of the language is a bit close to the mark and there are too many sexual references for a classful of year 7s. And also because I'm an easily-irritated Scot who doesn't like the racial sterotyping of Glaswegian Grin

On the other hand, it's a lost tamer than the derived sketches that our Year 10-11 drama students performed the other week, in front of the innocent little year 6 pupils who had come to try out secondary school Shock. So maybe she'll get away with it.

HagOtheNorth · 12/07/2015 19:45

Suggest another poem? Confused
Why did she pick this one and perhaps we could come up with something.
But there's a fucking lot of poetry out there.

AChickenCalledKorma · 12/07/2015 19:46

"lot" tamer, not "lost" tamer, obvs

redheadandgoingtobed · 12/07/2015 19:46

it is in a (fairly) old book of poetry that she found one day. she generally likes the jist of the poem.
