Fitbit as a present for a 10yr old?

Bambambini · 10/07/2015 11:41

More of a query really. 10 yr old likes my Fitbit and has asked for one. Birthday coming up - views really on whether this is an appropriate present for a child. Will double as a watch but should a 10 yr old be focussing on how many steps taken, heart rate, calories burned etc?

Just need some views before I buy it, thanks.

I got my 10yo dd a fitbit for Xmas. She uses it to track her steps. She's pretty active already though.

My 10yo had a fitbit for her birthday. She's very sporty and I did my best to talk her into a proper gps training watch instead but she preferred how the fitbit looked Hmm it's just an expensive pedometer, she has no interest in calories, just just waits for the 10k fireworks every day...

ArgyMargy · 17/06/2017 09:54

Yes, great idea but focused on the activity not the calories.

My ten year old has one and loves it!
She tracks her steps and sleep.
Got her a more fit from Amazon for £30. Highly recommend

DS got one. He's fascinated. It's a watch too, but he's more interested in his step differential on days he does sport. Also he does get u when it buzzes after he's been screening too long. My only gripe is they're not waterproof.

Aeroflotgirl · 17/06/2017 09:59

No I would not give that to a 10 year old, she does not need to be worrying about weight and calories every bit of the day.

ZOMBIE!!!

Dixiechickonhols · 17/06/2017 10:08

They are very popular in dds class yr 6 (so age 10/11) many have them. They use it for steps it's been good for her to see difference between days where she is sat in classroom and where she is more active. She is more willing to walk dog to get steps. Likes the celebration when 10000 done. She has never looked at calories (I have one neither have I) also I've checked sleep or lack of and shown her that.

REACTIVATED ZOMBIE COMING FOR YOUR BRAINS!!!

SabineUndine · 26/09/2019 15:48

If you get the right one, it would be good. I used to have a really basic one, I only used it to see how active I'd been. Nowt wrong with encouraging kids to exercise.

SabineUndine · 26/09/2019 15:49

ARGH! Got me!

StripyHorse · 26/09/2019 20:31

DD has the fitbit ace 2, it doesn't track calories or heart rate. You buy it with a chunky strap that protects the face more but if you change the strap it looks just like the adult version (inspire). It is currently £70 but was £50 over the summer so might drop price again.

Mummyshark2019 · 26/09/2019 21:12

Of course it's a suitable gift. We should be encouraging kids to be more active.

LadyofMisrule · 26/09/2019 22:37

My 11 year old has one for the alarms. He can set up the times for his music lessons (they are in school time and vary each week) and it buzzes discreetly when he has to ask to leave the class.
