To be annoyed at my GP!

I've just found out I am pregnant and I have very well controlled type 2 diabetes (also have pcos and this pregnancy is after 8 years of no contraception!). I also have a blood disorder which means I am higher risk for miscarriage and I did have pre eclampsia in my first pregnancy also caused by blood disorder. I have had to stop taking my medication for diabetes as it cannot be used during pregnancy. I rang GPs for an appointment and they have said none available until a weeks time! I explained all of what I have written and basically been told "sorry but that's the earliest appt we can give you". I am really annoyed about this and want to ring the surgery today to complain but don't know if it's me overreacting. Any thoughts?

Excellent! If you don't already get prescribed plenty of blood sugar test strips it would be worth asking for more of those (ideally added to your repeat prescription) - especially since you have to change medication as you'll be needing to test much more frequently. Not sure if you were type 2 during your last pregnancy so already know this...but pregnancy may well make your blood sugar rise dramatically so you will need to monitor closely. Needing to double my insulin overnight was how I knew I was pregnant the last two times!

whats I had gestational diabetes last pregnancy. Have only been diagnosed with type 2 for around 18 months. I don't currently test my levels at home and my hba1cs are around 40mmol. I should imagine I'll have to test though as I know pregnancy means your levels can shoot up. I was on empagliflozin for my diabetes and the midwife I spoke to today said the consultant told her that the combination of pregnancy and the med can cause sugars to shoot sky high!

Congratulations Thanks

I do think it's still worth flagging up the response from the initial receptionist, and also the diabetic nurse's apparent lack of knowledge; it might help someone else in future.
