to think that Daddy Pig is a victim of domestic abuse?

Now, I know it is just a cartoon and I shouldn't take it so seriously, but thanks to my own personal experiences I'm a little bit more sensitive in this area than I maybe should be.

My DS loves Peppa Pig, resulting in us having watched probably hundreds of episodes. However, it wasn't until this weekend that I have actually taken any real notice of the story-lines (mainly it's just white noise in the background) and was quite shocked at how Daddy Pig is spoken to.

There were several occasions where he was called fat and even more where he was called lazy. One episode shows his wife and her parents mocking his weight, one of them saying 'your tummy is too big to get through the door', while his children giggle and join in.

I think if it was the other way round and Daddy Pig was calling Mummy Pig fat and lazy there would be major uproar about it. I also think the way he is treated is far too close to how a lot of domestic abuse starts; the insults put across as a big 'joke' to start off with so the person it is aimed at is not 'allowed' to be offended and speak up.

AIBU?

My kids no longer watch cartoons, but I totally agree, both DH and I noticed the way that daddy pig was spoken too, prompting a debate about which kids shows have a male role (or even lead) that isnt stupid and looked down on.
to be fair, my kids dont watch alot now, so Im not that exposed.

I hate Peppa Pig, she's an obnoxious brat.

Everytime I hear 'it is a little but funny Daddy Pig' when it is clearly not funny, makes me want to break my Veganism and eat a bacon sandwich.

SillyOldElfBackToYourself · 06/07/2015 13:36

I feel sorry for Daddy pig.

They are really mean the way they talk to him, and they forget about him and leave him on the other side of the river and eat all the picnic. They also give his peice of cake to the ducks and he is very kind and patient about it all.

On the other hand he can be annoying thinking he is "a bit of an expert" at everything.

Flashbangandgone · 06/07/2015 14:49

It's a kids TV show about pigs.

I'm sorry, but this is a totally idiotic attempt at a put-down to the Op's point.

Since when do pigs live in houses, talk, walk, drive cars, go to school etc., laugh at their Dad for being fat, and do all the, erm, human things Peppa Pig and her family do!

Imagine if a black pig family can to live next door, and Peppa Pig and family abused and bullied them because of their colour... would that be fine, because it's 'just about pigs isn't it'? Really??

I don't have any real view about Daddy Pig as haven't watched enough (or rather hadn't paid particular attention when watching) Peppa Pig, it's more that some people don't engage their brains!

eggyface · 06/07/2015 15:05

yanbu!! Poor Daddy Pig bears the brunt of a whole load of passive aggressive shite from Mummy Pig. He withdraws and reads his blameless quiet magazines (What Concrete, or whatever it is) and then gets teased for being boring!

I find it's subtly sexist in a way I dislike - that eye rolling, Tch, Men, Eh? bollocks that some women do.

the way George falls over and cries instantly on a slight pretext is perfectly observed, however.

And anyone patronisingly saying "It's only a cartoon", have a biscuit and go and read some semiotics.

Fairy13 · 06/07/2015 17:57

I felt sorry for daddy pig when he put his own washing out just before going to work while they all jumped In muddy puddles right next to the clean white washing so it got all muddy.

Mummy pig should show better judgement IMO

Trapper · 06/07/2015 18:14

"It's a kids TV show about pigs". Yes, and Animal Farm was about farmyard animals too Hmm

QueenofallIsee · 07/07/2015 15:32

I am with you OP! I know its just a show but they are just awful to him and Peppa is a brat!....I also hate that adventure time (awesome fun and my kids love it) features a dude who kidnaps women to force them to marry him. Only the pretty ones though natch

HoldYerWhist · 07/07/2015 15:37

I couldn't agree more!

I won't have it in my house. Peppa's a fucking horror who I wish would be slaughtered for bacon.

Their treatment of Daddy Pig is awful and it wouldn't happen if it was Mummy Pig getting abused!

Childrenofthestones · 07/07/2015 15:48

Whenever I want. to know if something is being sexist I just picture it the other way round.
Shit hitting the fan would be putting it mildly. There would be a feminist campaign to have it taken of air in no time.
Name one cartoon where the mother is the but of the jokes.

flamingoland · 07/07/2015 15:48

I like this thread a lot!! Some very funny anecdotes Grin

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 07/07/2015 15:51

I won't have it in the house but mainly because its misogynistic and perpetuates gender stereotypes. And yes, Daddy Pig gets a pretty rough ride but he's fairly useless around the house and with the kids - Mummy Pig would be well shot of him.

Tenementfunster · 07/07/2015 15:53

Mummy pig is a passive aggressive old sow. Best moment when she fell in the blackberry bush. Karma
Over invested I know!

redredwineandlotsofit · 07/07/2015 16:02

Probably not domestic abuse, but normalising fat shaming is not so good.
